President Trump’s fiscal year 2027 budget request, released on Friday, asks Congress to spend $152 million to reopen Alcatraz as a “state-of-the-art secure prison facility.”
The President has long embraced tough lock-up conditions for violent criminals “as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE.”
Last May, President Trump called the Bureau of Prisons to reopen the original Alcatraz off the coast of San Francisco to house the “dregs of society.” He said in a Truth Social Post, “We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and Judges that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals,

No need to remodel. Put them in just like that.

DH and I toured Alcatraz in the 90's and it was in bad shape then. Can't imagine what the weather has done with it since.

Will never happen. It has been years since last I toured the infamous joint and the salty winds and fog had dissolved the concrete beyond repair. It is a major landmark in a national park. Far more than $152 million would be needed to convert it back to a prison. By the way, the bay is home to a species of small sharks, not Great White, that pose no threat to anyone brave enough to swim in the frigid water.

I didn't have an opinion on Alcatraz one way or another. But knowing that Pelosi is venting her spenn over it, I now find myself in favor of reopening. Perhaps rename it the Donald Trump Alcatraz detention facility. In a 12' lit marquee facing downtown SF.

I like the part about including judges in with the thugs and criminals. THAT would justify any rebuild. In fact, the first inmates can be put to work mixing mud for the new walls. My brother is a mason and mixing cement for brickwork, really makes any other career path seem a lot more inviting.

I think President Trump is having a bit of fun, using the Alcatraz name as an attention grabber, and as cover for other, more important things in the budget request.
That he got ol' Pee-Lousy all worked up is icing on the cake.
She complains about wasting Taxpayer's money- she should know- she's a long-time, well-experienced EXPERT at wasting Taxpayer's money.
Seriously, I understand that the Alcatraz buildings are in pretty bad shape. It would make a LOT more sense to build a new, modern, efficient-to-operate prison out in the middle of nowhere, where, if someone DID get out, there would be nowhere to go, and they would be easy to find and recapture. Yuma, perhaps?
Florida's 'Alligator Alcatraz' that was in the news a few months ago is one option, perhaps adding to one of the existing 'supermax' prisons is another.
I think another option would also be very effective, and that is to make Judges RESPOSIBLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF THE VIOLENT OFFENDERS THAT THEY RELEASE EARLY OR RELEASE ON BAIL!
Make these Leftist Judges PAY for releasing these THUGS 30 or 40 times after they commit VIOLENT crimes!

Nancy, why are you still in Congress? Is Hakeem your puppet and you are still in control, but wanted to give the sheeple a black Speaker if and when the Dems get back the House? Go spend your millions of inside trader dollars and get out of politics. After November, you can Chuck can start having 4 PM dinners at Denny's.

Do it no matter what condition it is in but keep an eye on the money set aside to refurbish it. The psychological blow to the squishy liberals will be worth it and criminals will not get a second chance at violent crime. People know what California does with grant money and there is usually no sign of it once it reaches that state. Great Whites have been photographed nabbing Sea Lions near the docks in San Francisco but the sightings are rare. One is enough to keep me diving elsewhere.

My thought would be to raze it. Keep a few cells on display for historical purposes and build a new max security for the worst of the worst. Expensive? Sure but probably a drop in the bucket compared to the ongoing, massive ripoffs of state and federal governments (we taxpayers). Deporting all Somalis and the savings would pay for the new prison in a couple of years.

I believe this would bring jobs to her district, which she should like.
Therefore, she has a really good reason to lose it.
Maybe she knows it is planned to be a "deep state" prison.

I understand the symbolic significance of Alcatraz, but US prisons need a dramatic increase in volume - and not just federal prisons. States are releasing violent psychopaths having lengthy conviction records - not just because of radical judges, but because there is no place to put them. Jails and prisons are overflowing with predators. We need more cages. We need to outsource to other countries. We need cheap alternatives, like remote minimalist prison outposts that don't require $150k.year and union prison guards.

Re W#3, Jacque Cousteau's expressed knowledge was that svhools of small sharks were very dangerous as they mobbed their prey and cut them to pieces. He cautioned not to underestimate the severe and often fatal damage they would do to a human being.

Nancy, the first “couple” to inhabit “Alcatraz 2.0” will be you, and your Stock genius husband, Paul.
