China - by which I mean, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which for all intents and purposes is China - is not our friend. They may be a trade partner, but they are not an ally; at best, they are a rival. At worst? An adversary. More evidence of this surfaced Friday, when a Stanford University student testified to a House of Representatives committee about years of harassment and stalking by the Chinese Communist Party, aimed at her work as an East Asia Studies major [snip] Johnson confirmed that she was receiving harassing phone calls. The FBI has confirmed she was being monitored by CCP agents on the grounds of the university.

Comments:

But this is only at Stanford. Right?

I read that all Chinese students that apply to come to the U.S. to study are required to sign a form that states they will spy for China. I don't know if they have to be asked to spy, or they are just expected to spy. I guess their parents back in China are under pressure as well.

A real FBI would arrest these harrassers and deport them immediately as Chinese foreign agents.

There's a Tech school here in Florida that appears to have more foreign students than Americans. Just my observation.

I think I was once approached by a Chinese spy seeking technical information. This was at a New Years Eve party of a Science Fiction club in Palo Alto, CA, back in 2001. She was a very attractive young Asian woman, said she was a graduate student at nearby Stanford U. So I did what any single guy would do, try to get to know her. Where do you work, she asked? Siemens, writing real-time communications software. Her interest picked up. She asked if I did any work to interface that data to the internet. Well, actually no, we connect to T1 data lines and such. A few more questions, and it was “Nice to meet you, goodbye.” My conclusion was: she was seeking information that would help China to better censor the internet, and so was trying to chat up engineers in the heart of the Silicon Valley. Maybe she was Fang Fang, Eric Swalwell’s honey?

#4, I got the same treatment during my business trips to china years ago. The chicom's army of foreign intel gatherers is non-stop. The are very good at what they do. They always knew the right questions to ask. Before traveling, we received anti-trust/anti-bribery/anti-corruption training refreshers to remind what to say and what not to say. It was standard corporate policy to leave our company-issued cell phones and laptops on our desks in the states to limit chicom spying. We were issued special equipment that was supposedly secure.

It’s like a pandemic: Weekly news reports of yet another teacher arrested for having an erotic relationship with a student – often a young, attractive female exploiting a teen male under the age of consent. But this phenomenon of “educator sexual misconduct,” or ESM, is not as bad as it appears. In fact, it’s worse. Such stories evoke the prurient pop music theme found in the rock band Van Halen’s 1984 tune “Hot For Teacher.” However, in the real world, the overwhelming majority of these criminal relationships are never disclosed and prosecuted, and their destructive impact on victims goes largely unreported.

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick illicitly funneled millions of dollars to her campaign and committed various campaign finance infractions, a bipartisan House Ethics subcommittee determined Friday — likely laying the groundwork for a vote by the full legislative body to expel the embattled Florida Democrat. The panel’s adjudicatory subcommittee, led by House Ethics Chair Michael Guest (R-Miss.), deliberated well past midnight following an hours-long hearing that served as the panel’s first public “trial” in nearly 16 years. It found “clear and convincing” evidence that Cherfilus-McCormick was guilty of all but two of the 27 counts that had been brought against her

Municipal police should be disarmed in the multicultural Saint-Denis suburb of Paris, the city’s recently elected radical Mayor Bally Bagayoko said this week, despite the history of violence and unrest in the area. The Malian-heritage mayor, who swept to power on the far-left Jean-Luc Mélenchon La France Insoumise (LFI/France in Rebellion) ticket — with the backing of the French Communist Party — earlier this month, defeating comparatively moderate Socialist Party candidate Mathieu Hanotin during the first round of voting in France’s two-round municipal elections. True to form, Bagayoko, who campaigned on giving free (taxpayer-funded) bicycles to every ninth-grade student in the city,

A Secret Service agent shot and wounded himself in the leg while guarding former first lady Jill Biden at Philadelphia International Airport on Friday, according to the agency and a report. The on-duty agent’s gun went off around 8:30 a.m. while helping escort former President Joe Biden’s wife at the busy travel hub, sources told KYW. The agent suffered a non-life-threatening injury following the “negligent discharge” that took place while he was handling his service weapon, said Secret Service spokesperson Nate Herring. “There was no impact to the protectee’s movement and they were not present at the time of the incident,” Herring said.

Delta Air Lines is punishing Congress for failing to fund the Department of Homeland Security. The airline company has temporarily yanked its special congressional desk service to lawmakers and staffers on Capitol Hill until Congress finally funds the DHS, which has been in a partial shutdown since Feb. 28. “Due to the impact on resources from the longstanding government shutdown, Delta will temporarily suspend specialty services to members of Congress flying Delta,” the company said in a statement first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Next to safety, Delta’s No. 1 priority is taking care of our people and customers, which has become increasingly difficult in the current environment.”
Checking Out Chicago's Checkout Bag Tax 6 replies

The City of Chicago instituted its Checkout Bag Tax in 2017. When introduced, allegedly to reduce the use of grocery bags to protect the environment, the charge was seven cents per bag. It was raised to ten cents per bag in 2025, and was most recently increased to fifteen cents per bag on Jan. 1, 2026. Before we look into these ideas in detail, let’s consider that history. A decade ago, Chicago did not have a bag tax. Then they started in 2017 with seven cents, liked it, and increased that number by 43% last year. Then this year,

Hopefully, the title of the film will be “Hard Time”: FBI agents raided a Hollywood mansion early Thursday, arresting a suspect in pajamas in a raid tied to an alleged $17.4 million mortgage fraud scheme targeting elderly homeowners. At 87 years old, California Rep. Maxine Waters isn’t just part of the Democratic gerontocracy the party is trying to fight against — she’s arguably its most visible face. Thus, approaching the 2026 election, you’d think that she’d be considering retiring — and if not that, at least scaling back her role a bit. Pulling a Pelosi, if you will: take it a bit easy and let your stock portfolio do the work for you. But, no. Not only does crazy old Auntie Maxine plan on running for her 19th term in office — which she’ll almost certainly succeed at, given her name recognition and how blue her district is

When did getting from point A to point B get so complicated? When the government decided which cars Americans should buy. With the economic and scientific premises behind electric vehicle (EV) mandates collapsing, the EV bubble may burst completely. There is one mandate left to burst: California’s Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II) regulation, which requires all new vehicles to be 100 percent electric by 2035, or else automakers get penalized. With the federal repeal of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Endangerment Finding in February, the government’s formal scientific basis for EV mandates is gone. State governments no longer have a rational scientific basis for requiring EV sales.

What do you call it when a politician tells you to put elections “back on a level playing field” by voting for a redistricting map gerrymandered to give Democrats 10 seats to Republicans’ one? “Lying” doesn’t quite foot the bill. “Rank deception” is closer, but I think this kind of rhetoric calls for the big guns. I’ll settle on “shameless Orwellian gaslighting,” because supporting the Virginia redistricting push in the name of “fairness” involves redefining basic words in the same manner as the oppressive government in George Orwell’s “1984,” and this rhetorical strategy seems designed to make people with rational concerns about the ballot initiative question their sanity. This isn't a shift in lifestyle from the animals, but rather something that's being forced upon them, as marine pollution becomes ever more pervasive. Finding traces of these substances in a tropical place widely seen as idyllic and pristine is concerning – it seems there are vanishingly few spots on Earth where wildlife can escape our influence. "Pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs are increasingly recognized as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in marine environments, particularly in areas undergoing rapid urbanization and tourism-driven development,"
