How bad is Zohran Mamdani for New York?

In the dwindling days of his run for Gracie Mansion, Zohran Mamdani has picked a strange priority: publicly funding gender change treatments for minors. If elected, the New York Sun reported, Mamdani plans to spend $65 million on “gender-affirming care.” He also promised to investigate New York hospitals that have stopped providing the services, fearing the Trump administration’s wrath, and create an “Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs” at City Hall. That Mamdani decided gender changes for teenagers deserved his campaign’s attention typifies his problem as a candidate — and danger to the city.

This doesn’t make sense to me. If he’s a practicing Muslim, wouldn’t he be anti-gay? Muslims tend to throw gays off of buildings or just kill them in general. A Muslim wouldn’t deceive his constituents, or infidels, would he?

There were too many candidates in the field, this guy won the majority. It's going to be interesting now to see how Curits Sliwa (R), Eric Adams (I) go up against this marxist democrat. I have no idea what will happen, but I think Sliwa will end up on top. He's kinda a yahoo BUT he loves NY, the Police and Law and Order. IF NYC votes for the marxist NYC is finished. WallStreet will have no choice but move out, cops will quit and more chaos will insue. Telling people they will get free groceries, free rent, free everything.. uses SOMEONES money. Why not? NYC just demonstrated for the last 4+ years with their sanctuary city, illegal migrant give-aways, be it hotels, food, healthcare, hands-off criminal enforcement and overt illegal migrant compassion, that it's possible for the government to 'take care of me'. Now the city residents who work everyday, pay check to pay check, want 'in'. Tough #%$@ NY. They see the endless fees, fines and taxes you rake in and yet nothing makes it down to the little guy. In contrast, the billionaires and celebrities flaunt their wealth. Good luck!

If the elect this guy, you will see a huge exodus of middle class (the ones left) and even more of the wealthy, taxpaying citizens...the ones who keep the city running. There will still be the ultra wealthy, Wall Street, high earners like entertainers and TV people. The ones who can live in the exurbs and get chauffeured in, afford extra security etc. Combine the free stuff with a lack of tourists because of the crime and we may be looking at a real "Escape From New York" movie. It will take a few years but that once great city will be in a death spiral. It's the promise of free stuff that's doing this. There's an old saying, "When you promise to make Peter pay Paul, you will always get Paul's vote". In this case, the Peters who have the means to leave will do so and take their taxes with them. All the fine restaurants, Broadway and attractions of NYC won't be enough to keep them.

Trump administration officials on Tuesday slammed a leaked preliminary intelligence assessment of the damage done to Iran’s nuclear facilities by weekend US airstrikes that the president has touted as a massive success. The classified Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) bomb damage assessment — deemed a “low confidence” estimation of the effectiveness of Saturday’s strikes on the Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz sites — reportedly determined that Iran could bring its nuclear program back online as quickly as within one to two months, according to Fox News. On the high end, estimates indicate that Iran could restart uranium enrichment within a year, according to those who viewed the DIA report.

This was NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte heaping direct praise on Trump as he flew to a two-day NATO summit in the Netherlands.

The hangings happened in Urmia Prison in Iran’s West Azerbaijan province, which is the country’s most northwest province. IRNA cited Iran’s judiciary for the news, saying the men had been accused of bringing “assassination equipment” into the country. Iran has carried out several hangings during its war with Israel, sparking fears from activists that it could conduct a wave of executions after the conflict ended.

Just as China has been attempting to redraw maritime boundaries in the South China Sea —renaming reefs, building artificial islands and militarizing waters in defiance of international rulings — it is now exporting a similar playbook to land borders. These moves are about more than maps. They are about creating a norm of impunity, where might makes right and ambiguity is weaponized. Over the past two decades, China has transformed contested reefs, shoals and rocks into militarily fortified islands, backed by creative "historical" narratives, domestic law, and a selective reading of international norms.

Pakistan condemned U.S. President Donald Trump for bombing Iran, less than 24 hours after saying he deserved a Nobel Peace Prize for defusing a recent crisis with India. Relations between the two South Asian countries plummeted after a massacre of tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir in April. The nuclear-armed rivals stepped closer to war in the weeks that followed, attacking each other until intense diplomatic efforts, led by the U.S., resulted in a truce for which Trump took credit. Shortly after sunrise, Iran launched a barrage of 20-30 missiles in three waves, according to Israel’s Army Radio. Sirens were sounded in the north, and then throughout the entire country. Most of the missiles were intercepted by Israel’s air defenses; the missile that hit the port city of Haifa, where Arabs and Jews live side-by-side, was the only one that caused injuries on the ground. It turns out that one of the damaged buildings was the Al-Jreena Mosque, one of the most important Muslim houses of worship in the city. Muslim clerics, or imams, were in the mosque, presumably ahead of weekly juma’ah services held on Fridays.

President Trump tore into the US intelligence community on Friday for having been “wrong” about how close Iran was to acquiring a nuclear weapon months ago, telling reporters that he now believes Tehran has a “tremendous amount” of enriched uranium that could build a bomb in just a few weeks. Trump made the assessment after breaking from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s testimony before Congress in March that Iran was not building nuclear weapons. “What intelligence do you have that Iran is building a weapon? Your intelligence community said they have no evidence that they are at this point,” the reporter asked Trump on the tarmac outside of Bedminster, New Jersey.

The U.S. has threatened a massive response to any attack.

The US military strikes on three of Iran’s nuclear facilities last weekend did not destroy the core components of the country’s nuclear program and likely only set it back by months, according to an early US intelligence assessment that was described by four people briefed on it. The assessment, which has not been previously reported, was produced by the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon’s intelligence arm. It is based on a battle damage assessment conducted by US Central Command in the aftermath of the US strikes, one of the sources said.

Enjoying a surge of support from progressive and younger voters, democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is a big step closer to becoming the first Muslim mayor of the nation's most populous city. While the Associated Press had yet to project a winner in New York City's Democratic Party mayoral primary Tuesday night, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo saw the writing on the wall, telling supporters at an election night gathering that Mamdani "won." Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assembly member from Queens who is originally from Uganda, topped the former three-term governor and nine other candidates in a crowded primary field in an election that was determined by ranked-choice voting.

This is a fair question from Matt Continetti, who recites some of the relevant quotations before posing it. I'll add to the list. President Bill Clinton described a nuclearlzed Iran as intolerable and signed the Iran Nonproliferation Act of 2000, "which authorize[d] him to take punitive action against individuals or organizations known to be providing material aid to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs in Iran." President George W. Bush intoned in 2008 that "permitting the world’s leading sponsor of terror to possess the world’s deadliest weapon would be an unforgivable betrayal of future generations."
