Researchers turn plastic into paracetamol

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh have engineered a strain of Escherichia coli that relies on small molecules from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles to survive. The synthetic metabolic process they designed converts nearly 100% of PET-derived substrates into the world’s most commonly used painkiller, acetaminophen,(Snip) Conventional pharmaceutical manufacturing has an enormous carbon footprint—55% more emission intensive than that of the automotive industry—but this new method leaves virtually no carbon emissions.

E-coli. The same bacteria that forces food recalls, has been engineered to thrive on the containers that food is packaged in. Sounds unhealthy.

Well, I was in over my head over this one, other than it seems to say Tylenol bad. Look, everything is bad. Pick your poison. Drs will not give you pain meds anymore, some can't take any aspirin or aspirin derivative, so Tylenol is it. Now oddly enough, real Tylenol does bother me, store brands don't and they work great. Go figure.

Excessive amount of Tylenol kills your liver, killing you. It seems very reckless to have a chemical which is useful in small doses, but deadly in only four times the safe dose, potentially being made by escaped bacteria in the landfills from discarded plastic, the entering our ground water.

Excessive amounts of many things (alcohol, caffeine, Vitamin A D and E) kill you. Just DON'T take more than your doctor recommended dose and you will be fine assuming you have no illness or condition that causes your liver or kidney health to be compromised. If the chemical formula for the stuff on the Walgreens shelf and the stuff the bacteria poop out is the same... it's the same. That's called Chemistry.

Interesting, but there is no harm in a carbon footprint. Is it commercially viable? If it isn't then it is not of use.

Undisclosed communication devices reportedly discovered in Chinese-manufactured solar panels and related equipment have sparked concerns among U.S. officials about the vulnerability of the nation’s power grid, according to a Reuters report. These “rogue” devices, found over the past nine months, could potentially destabilize energy infrastructure and trigger widespread blackouts, sources familiar with the matter told the outlet. The undocumented devices, including cellular radios, were identified in solar power inverters, batteries, electric vehicle chargers, and heat pumps produced by several Chinese suppliers.

I’ll admit I agree with almost all of President Donald Trump’s initiatives, but there’s one about which I have some doubts: stopping the minting of pennies. Yes, I know that pennies cost more to make than they’re worth. (Snip) The nearest rounding option would be five cents (though there’s a smaller lobby gunning to kill the nickel, too). That means every transaction in Colorado — the lowest state sales tax at 2.9% — will get rounded up. New York City, whose combined tax cut on most sales is effectively 8.875%, will also get rounded up.

This is a fair question from Matt Continetti, who recites some of the relevant quotations before posing it. I'll add to the list. President Bill Clinton described a nuclearlzed Iran as intolerable and signed the Iran Nonproliferation Act of 2000, "which authorize[d] him to take punitive action against individuals or organizations known to be providing material aid to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs in Iran." President George W. Bush intoned in 2008 that "permitting the world’s leading sponsor of terror to possess the world’s deadliest weapon would be an unforgivable betrayal of future generations."

Each of them is horrendous, from free bus services to rent control to punitive taxes on those who create prosperity, but none are quite so laughable as his proposal to establish a chain of city-run grocery stores. Mamdani’s campaign literature – overflowing with empty leftist jargon – says if elected he “will create a network of city-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices low, not making a profit.”
