A new Washington Post report suggested that the crime problem in major American cities has grown into a "moral panic." Post culture reporter Maura Judkis authored the piece in the paper’s Style section on Friday, with the headline "The zombie CVS, a late-capitalism horror story." (Snip) "It became a horror story of Late Capitalism," she wrote, adding that "the empty CVS had somehow become a stand-in for all that is wrong with American cities — and liberals (and liberal democracy?) — in 2024." The reporter continued, implying that there is ancestral guilt about stealing and colonization at play in this

What does stolen land have to do with shoplifting? So since we stole someone’s land, we have no right to object to someone stealing other peoples property? Then, open your home or apartment to everyone and let them come and help themselves to your possessions. Do it. Put you money where your mouth is. Live your truth.

I don't feel guilty. I just try to be helpful. But if that is going to be taken as a slur on my forebears, and that i am acquiescing, then I will find different ways to be helpful to Humanity. .. These "guilt" articles - what I really think is the authors are dreaming of being White Saviors, and not having enough to hand over, instead it is the dignity of their families. "Guilty as Sin! Swipe it All! Trust me this is Fine! You owe em Nothing! Awful People! Ugh!"

Ain't no "moral panic," we got ourselves a blackmail problem, and if you can't recogize that, you're a homophonophobe.

Conquored, not stolen. And a lot of it was purchased totally legally from Indians.
Either way....don't care, too late, just bury the past.
As to shoplifting, we need to really start hammering these thieves, literally. Billy clubs applied liberally by police at the scene would go a long way to stopping this.

I wonder who to give it back to because the owners before us stole it from someone.
Actually GOD owns it all and HE gave us DOMINION over it.
How much of this STOLEN land have the activists given back? Just wondering.

It wasn't stolen land, it was conquered land, just as it has always been.

Read enough history and you'll see that almost every inch of earth belonged to someone else at one time. The old saying 'to the victor belongs the spoils' means whoever can win the war for land gets to keep it, til the next person decides they want it and will fight for it. And those here when the pilgrims arrived weren't the first to 'own' this land. So I don't feel the least bit guilty about so called stolen land.

If this is the best the Washington Post has then they need to go out of business. She needs a reality check and some illegal should go to her house and rob her of everything that is important to her and see how she feels about that.

If Maura's understanding of history is so hideously distorted, how can her grasp of culture have any truth under it or relevance in it? Every piece of land on which somebody lives today was stolen at some point in its past. No way to get around that universal part of human history. Every person in America came from somewhere else or descends from someone who came from somewhere else. There are no indigenous Americans (neither North America nor South America).

(I'm not claiming that nobody came here into a place that wasn't already being occupied, but that everybody was either a colonizer or a conqueror. Or descended from such.)

So, the Indians presented a valid deed, and we ignored it and "stole" their land?

Stolen land from over a century ago has nothing to do with the shoplifting of today.
Have they ever been burglarized, robbed, or assaulted? If so, they would sing a different tune. Maybe they were a thief at one time. Amazing they stand up for the thief. Implies they are one or have family members that are thieves. What rubbish. Hope they like living in a wasteland when all the businesses shutdown and everyone is out of work. Anyone with resources will leave.
