Pope Francis said Sunday that military disarmament is not optional but constitutes a “moral obligation” for all nations. Following his weekly Angelus address in Saint Peter’s Square, the pontiff recalled that March 5 marks the second International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness. “How many resources are wasted on military expenditure, which, because of the current situation, sadly continues to increase!” he told the estimated 20,000 tourists and pilgrims gathered in the square. (snip) Francis is also the only pope to ever declare that not only the use of nuclear weapons, but also their mere possession “is immoral.”

Tending to agree with the pope. In this imperfect world, armies form for the purpose of assault, and or deterrence. Weapons that target noncombatants are truly immoral. We banned gas, we banned bioweapons…nukes are worse than both…

the man is hard to defend. OK, the principle he is putting forth is that military expenditures have to have a benefit that outwieighs their cost. That is fine, Where he has no expertise and oughta shut up, is weighing whether that is true. The Holy Father is entitled to a polite listen, when he talks about matters of faith and morals affecting the entire church. He is not entitled to a specially polite listen, when he applies the principles to specific situations. There you have it. Further, a polite listen is not infallibility, for all the worriers. This is not remolely in that territory. So: his principle is reasonable; his application is uninformed and he is driving outside his lane in attempting it.

California, which is in a state of perpetually self-inflicted drought, restricts all sorts of practical water solutions (because) they would hurt some living creature somewhere. Hundreds of thousands of young salmon are believed to have died this week at the site of a historic dam removal project on the Klamath River, after an effort to restore salmon runs on the newly unconstrained river went awry, the Chronicle has learned.

However, the Department of Justice prosecuted only the white supremacists under the Anti-Riot Act of 1968. A federal court has finally called foul on this unconstitutional government bias. The decision, by Judge Cormac J. Carney (a George W. Bush nominee), is in United States of America v. Rundo et al. The defendants, both self-avowed white supremacists, moved to dismiss the charges against them under the Anti-Riot Act because the government violated the equal protection clause when it failed to prosecute anarcho-Marxists for identical activity.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday secured a major victory in his challenge to the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending package passed in 2022, with a court declaring that the bill was approved unconstitutionally. President Joe Biden signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 in December of the prior year. The measure effectively set the federal budget for the year by wrapping the 12 annual appropriations bills into a single piece of legislation. Paxton, however, had argued that the House's passage of the measure was unconstitutional as less than half of the lower chamber's members were physically present to vote on it.
