Some new California laws will change things up in the workplace in the new year. AB 1228 is increasing the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 an hour. The law only applies to restaurants with more than 60 locations. NBC 7 spoke to a labor attorney who said it seems there may be a shift in how companies value an often-overlooked workforce. Christopher Olmstead is a labor and employment attorney, also managing shareholders, with Ogletree Deakins in San Diego. He said many industries have already adapted for several reasons. "Availability of workers to fill roles, that’s really putting

Of course the dems know that raising the min wage at larger chains will force the smaller stores to do the same...or those smaller stores will lose their employees to the larger chains.
IOW, they know good and well that the 60-store threshold is a superficial and meaningless gesture, only good for propaganda?

I wouldn't want to be employees if the chain has more than 60 stores in CA. 61 or more outlets and ALL the employees go to $20. Shutting a few down saves a bundle in expenses.
Same thing happened when Obamacare kicked in if employers had more than 100 employees (?). I know of one business owner who had to let several workers go.

$20 is becoming worth less and less. Actions like this will hasten its devaluation. Then what happens? The legislature---- which knows nothing about economics-- will soon call for an increse in the minimum wage of course.

Fast food workers are "often overlooked" for a reason. My local Taco Bell lost my business a couple of years ago for handing me tacos that had a half ounce of ingredients in each one and the worker took 25 minutes to get my order ready. Subway started skimping on sandwiches to the point where you had to search inside the bread to verify that they hadn't forgotten the ingredients, after raising prices through the roof. I'm done with all of them and I don't care how much money they make. If any of them sold a sandwich or a burger that was as huge as the one pictured on TV they would not have a problem.

Fast food restaurants will either close, or figure out ways to reduce costs - kiosk ordering, no eat-in dining, no bathrooms, more tasks done by robots. Owners will find a way, and it won't benefit the customers or the workers that lose their jobs or never hired.

No need to hire illegals, at $20 they should have a long line of quality people wanting the few available jobs that are not automated. Also no short term summer jobs for students so don't expect to your kids to get any on the job experiences. Also the added costs are bound to force many locations to close or just never open.

No better way to destroy the fast food industry. It was always about affordable not just fast. As people balk at the higher cost of lunch, they will alter their habits and realize they can eat better for a fraction of the price. It’s become a habit, a bad habit. Of course what do I know, I have up fast food hamburgers almost 30 years ago. Actually I gave up dining out all together and saved up the price of a new car not to mention my weight is down and I’m healthier. Fast food drains your wallet and in CA it is going to make you poor.

The McDonalds near my job already uses kiosks for you to place an order. Only live people give you your food and even then, there wasn't that many workers there. I suspect that fast food restaurants in dumb old California will either shut down or become completely animated.

Well, in EU countries were wages are higher, computer consoles have taken over many cashier jobs.
At this point there is no reason most fast food places could not be fully automate save for a few competent humans worth $20/hr in case of tech issues or for special circumstances. It's just a capital investment some big company is going to eventually make and then everyone will follow suit. No more worries about surly, dirty employees and inconsistent service. Plus no pay or benefits for robots.

Not a fan of mandated min wage but this is crazy.
“fast food workers” get the $20 min wage , everybody else gets $16
Still not sure why different industries get different government mandated min wage. Looks like illegal government favoritism to me
