Some new California laws will change things up in the workplace in the new year. AB 1228 is increasing the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 an hour. The law only applies to restaurants with more than 60 locations. NBC 7 spoke to a labor attorney who said it seems there may be a shift in how companies value an often-overlooked workforce. Christopher Olmstead is a labor and employment attorney, also managing shareholders, with Ogletree Deakins in San Diego. He said many industries have already adapted for several reasons. Comments:

Note that the media interviewed a labor attorney for opinion about the law. How about business that will have to pay $20/hour for someone flipping burgers or pressing 'Start' on the French Fryer?

Of course the dems know that raising the min wage at larger chains will force the smaller stores to do the same...or those smaller stores will lose their employees to the larger chains. IOW, they know good and well that the 60-store threshold is a superficial and meaningless gesture, only good for propaganda?

I wouldn't want to be employees if the chain has more than 60 stores in CA. 61 or more outlets and ALL the employees go to $20. Shutting a few down saves a bundle in expenses. Same thing happened when Obamacare kicked in if employers had more than 100 employees (?). I know of one business owner who had to let several workers go.

Fast food workers are "often overlooked" for a reason. My local Taco Bell lost my business a couple of years ago for handing me tacos that had a half ounce of ingredients in each one and the worker took 25 minutes to get my order ready. Subway started skimping on sandwiches to the point where you had to search inside the bread to verify that they hadn't forgotten the ingredients, after raising prices through the roof. I'm done with all of them and I don't care how much money they make. If any of them sold a sandwich or a burger that was as huge as the one pictured on TV they would not have a problem.

No need to hire illegals, at $20 they should have a long line of quality people wanting the few available jobs that are not automated. Also no short term summer jobs for students so don't expect to your kids to get any on the job experiences. Also the added costs are bound to force many locations to close or just never open.

No better way to destroy the fast food industry. It was always about affordable not just fast. As people balk at the higher cost of lunch, they will alter their habits and realize they can eat better for a fraction of the price. It’s become a habit, a bad habit. Of course what do I know, I have up fast food hamburgers almost 30 years ago. Actually I gave up dining out all together and saved up the price of a new car not to mention my weight is down and I’m healthier. Fast food drains your wallet and in CA it is going to make you poor.

Well, in EU countries were wages are higher, computer consoles have taken over many cashier jobs. At this point there is no reason most fast food places could not be fully automate save for a few competent humans worth $20/hr in case of tech issues or for special circumstances. It's just a capital investment some big company is going to eventually make and then everyone will follow suit. No more worries about surly, dirty employees and inconsistent service. The total represents an increase of about 70,650 homeless people compared to January 2022. If you’ve ever wondered what colonization in real time looks like, look no further: In September, Minnesota launched an initiative to create a new state seal and flag to replace the longstanding designs after it was determined these dated elements were “offensive” to certain elevated classes. From an item published at AP News at the time: A state commission went to work Tuesday on designing a new state flag and seal for Minnesota to replace a current emblem in both that’s considered offensive to Native Americans. One of the main elements of Minnesota’s state flag includes a prominent state seal against a blue background. The seal depicts

Raw unprotected gay sex. Not a topic that a mainstream political news outlet normally handles. However, when you are talking about Democrats and the U.S. Senate sometimes such outlets do have to handle it. Such is the case with a 24-year-old staffer for Senator Ben Cardin who was discovered on a private video having raw unprotected gay sex in a chamber of the Hart Senate Building on Capitol Hill. So if you are Politico, how do you cover this scandal? Well, very very delicately as you can see in the Saturday Playbook, "Senate staffer out after sex tape scandal."

Pope Francis turned 87 on Sunday, closing out a year that saw big milestones in his efforts to reform the Catholic Church as well as health scares that raise questions about his future as pope. Francis celebrated his birthday with cake during a festive audience with children Sunday morning, and there were “Happy Birthday” banners in St. Peter’s Square during his weekly noon blessing. One early present came Saturday, when a Vatican tribunal handed down a mix of guilty verdicts and acquittals in a complicated trial that Francis had supported as evidence of his financial reforms. The biggest-name defendant, Cardinal Angelo Becciu, was convicted of embezzlement.

It has long been obvious that the Democrats badly want Donald Trump to be the Republican presidential nominee in 2024. This may seem counterintuitive in light of a recent spate of polls showing the former president leading Joe Biden, but this is primarily an artifact of the latter’s weakness. The most reliable polls show Trump bumping up against a ceiling of about 47 percent of the popular vote, which is consistent with his performance in the last two elections. Moreover, in order to win in the Electoral College, he must recapture several swing states Biden narrowly won in 2020.

During an appearance on FNC’s “Special Report,” former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) called on viewers not to back former President Donald Trump. She said she believed he would not uphold the rule of law. Cheney said, “Every single president, Republican and Democrat, since George Washington, has ensured the peaceful transition of power. Donald Trump tried to seize power. So we can disagree with Biden policies, but the fact that he tried to seize power, the fact that he ignored the rulings of 61 courts, the fact that he ignored his own attorney general, his own White House counsel, who told him what he was saying about the election was false.

An elected Democratic official in Washington, D.C., has been fined by the District of Columbia Board of Elections for voting twice in 2020. Vanessa Rubio, an advisory neighborhood commissioner in D.C., voted in the District of Columbia and Maryland during the 2020 presidential election, according to NBC 4 Washington reporter Mark Segraves. She reportedly told the Board of Elections that since DC is not a state, she believed voting twice would be acceptable.
