Supreme Court Rejects Derek Chauvin’s
Appeal to Reconsider Conviction in George
Floyd Case

On Monday, the US Supreme Court rejected former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s appeal to reconsider his conviction for second-degree murder in the killing of George Floyd. The justices did not comment on their decision to leave in place state court rulings affirming Chauvin’s conviction and 22 1/2-year sentence, San Diego Union-Tribune reported. In October, attorneys representing Chauvin appealed to the Supreme Court to review his case. This appeal was based on the refusal of a Minnesota trial court to change the venue of the trial and sequester the jury.

Wrong basis for the request for a new trial. New EVIDENCE that the trial didn't have might be a reason to redo.

His conviction was a rush to judgment. Are we supposed to have any confidence in the judicial system after this? I don't, but I do hope for justice for Chauvin. He was convicted by a howling mob in the streets.

Here's how appeals work. If an appeals court vote is unanimous, like 3-0, that's it. The next higher court will not take up the next appeal, unless you have a damn good lawyer to make the case for you. If your losing vote is 2-1, you get to the next level. Been there, done that. In my case, I had a good lawyer, who got the state Supreme Court to look at my losing 3-0 appeal. I got the other side to settle because their lawyer said to his client, you never know what a court or jury will do, OJ Simpson anyone? Like the Woody Allen movie said, take the money and run! Chauvin might get lucky and get pardoned if Trump becomes president. You never know!

Another day, another leak. Former Vice President Mike Pence trashed President Trump to Special Counsel Jack Smith earlier this year in a closed-door testimony. Chief Judge James Boasberg, an Obama appointee ordered former Vice President Mike Pence to testify before a grand jury about his conversations with President Trump related to January 6. This was an unprecedented attack on Trump’s authority and executive privilege which is derived from the constitutional separation of powers. Jack Smith was present at the grand jury proceeding during Pence’s 5-hour testimony in April. According to a leak to ABC News, Mike Pence told Jack Smith that Trump hired a bunch of “crank” lawyers who espoused “un-American” legal theories,

As the Academy Award-winning director of Schindler’s List and founder of the USC Shoah Foundation, which records the testimonials of Holocaust survivors, the Jewish Steven Spielberg has been surprisingly silent about the barbaric October 7 Hamas pogrom in Israel. Silent about the 1,200-1,400 Jews who were raped, mutilated, and murdered. Silent about the thousands of Jews who were injured. Silent about the hundreds of Jews taken hostage. Not. One. Word. Many have asked Spielberg to say something…anything…but have been met with (yes) silence. David Schaecter, a 94-year-old Holocaust survivor and the president of Holocaust Survivors’ Foundation USA, wrote an open letter to Steven Spielberg.

Not quite the same as the old Dark Age. The old Dark Age happened when the corporate governmental structure of Rome collapsed, allowing hordes of tribal heathens to overrun what had been the empire’s domain. Today’s Dark Age is instead happening because modern governments continue to become ever more powerfully intrusive into what used to be private affairs, using their assumed authority to enforce some sort of contrived orthodoxy and thus moving towards politicizing just about everything. This is particularly obvious in the various fields of science.

There is more than an average share of discontent brewing from sea to shining sea as ever more Americans get the sense that their country, which has been pivotal to ensuring global security, stands on the edge of a cliff. Many comfort themselves by looking at other pivotal moments in our history where the country’s future was in doubt right before the ship was righted. But, due to a confluence of factors, it is hard to imagine America bouncing back. There are four problems that, if not reversed soon, will lead to collapse, and America will fall.

One of the indisputable foundations of civilization came down Mount Sinai 3,323 years ago. Moses brought two tablets etched with the Ten Commandments to his people and pronounced it to be their common law, which would secure their peace and freedom from the arbitrary rule of kings or pharaohs. One of England’s foremost jurists, Sir Edward Coke, called Moses “the first reporter or writer of law in the world.” Robert Sheffern, a historian of law, wrote that the laws compiled by the Jews in the Ten Commandments, the Torah, and the Talmud “may well be the most influential collection of legal materials in world history.”
The Catastrophic Death of Fairness 7 replies

Some social psychologists believe that humans are biologically wired to seek “fair” relationships with others. Some theologians believe that the soul’s capacity for distinguishing right from wrong leads a moral person toward the same result. Whether genetically or spiritually inclined to prefer fair outcomes, we humans are not comfortable around those who cheat and prosper from duplicity. Cheating is ugly and therefore despised. Systemic cheating, however, now dominates Western life. Elevating “diversity for diversity’s sake” over all other metrics for gauging achievement has reduced merit and hard work to second-class virtues.

Sanders said, “Well, this was how I respond. Look, Israel was attacked in an absolutely horrific way by Hamas, 1,300 innocent people were slaughtered. Israel has a right to defend itself, but what Israel does not have a right to do, in my view, is to kill 12,000 people in six, seven weeks, two-thirds of whom are women and children.
