'Smart' appliances – the rise of the machines

Original Article

Whoever came up with the original concept of “smart” devices had to be a fan of the “Terminator” movies. Because if these things are smart, they wouldn’t break down constantly and drive us insane. But that’s part of their devious plan. (I’m not some conspiracy theory guy. This is real.)

Comments:

The author’s experience with ‘smart’ washing machines closely matches my own.

I had the same struggle with our double oven. Too many options. It even has a feature called Sabbath.” I have no idea what that’s for. Some sort of religious holiday thing. Also, the usual presets to turn it off and on, something that have never used and never will. One neat little feature is it will sneakily turn it self off yet still show the temperature you first selected. I had that happen with a Thanksgiving turkey and a big crowd enroute. Paid almost two grand for it and must have four invested by now after having three motherboards replaced. Oh, one more thing. It has a fan that has a high-pitched, annoying, whining sound when the oven is turned on. I asked the repairman on one of his numerous visits if he could disconnect it. No, he says, you will cook the motherboard. Cheap Chinese krep.

When I bought a washer a few years ago, I asked for the top loader that uses the most water. I was in Europe for a while trying to use one those low water machines and I didn't want anything like that! You have to look beyond the first appliance store visit. I think Home Depot still has them. When you hear "smart" anything, think "they are trying to spy on me" through this purchase. I go as low tech as possible on refrigerator or anything else. Never ever want them connected to the internet. I refused a smart electric meter on my home.

Periodically, our smart Maytag won't wash unless we run a 'wash cycle' - not for the clothes, but for the machine! It decides when it won't behave like a child. Had we known that, we would have looked elsewhere. They're going to get worse because Brandon has commanded manufacturers to reduce their capacity to clean clothes even further. Save the earth.

After cursing out our dishwasher and washing machine, it’s nice to know we’re not alone. Obviously, there are millions of us out here. Speaking of rise of the machines, I had a Camaro that would start flicking its lights on and off. It took FIVE trips to the dealer before they finally found the problem.

Funny, unless you own one. Fortunately, about 15 years ago a friend told me that his neighbor was tossing her 1 year old washing machine, wondered if I wanted to take a look. I went over with my pickup, the washer was sitting by the street, still full of water, so apparently wouldn't pump out. I can fix things and I could use a washer for my vacation home. OK, tipped it on the side to empty, took it home, and set up outside the garage to try it out. I did a test, it did nothing, but lights came on. I removed the top, looked around....and saw that the plastic arm onthe safety switch was broken off. This is how the washer thinks the lid is closed. Lid not closed, no anything. Bought a new $5 lid switch, install it, and it works perfectly. It lives in my vacation cabin, runs maybe two loads a year, and I have a $5 nearly new backup, simple, plain, ordinary washing machine - on top of the one we use normally which is about 25 years old, and running perfectly. New appliances are pretty much fancy junk. I got this from an engineer who worked for Whirlpool washer dryer factory in Nebraska or Iowa, I forget, before she came to where I used to work. We discussed appliance design a bit, and she left because she wasn't pleased with the quality being made...and this was 15 years ago. More advanced electronics equals lower reliability, for certain. I'll never own a "smart" appliance of any kind, guaranteed.

When I read “the rise of the machines”, my mind immediately goes to The Matrix. A few years ago we needed to buy a new television and went to Best Buy. We specifically told the sales-kid that we did NOT want a smart TV. After he got over his shock and disgust, he found one for us. I hope that it lasts a very long time because I don’t think any are being made these days.

Don't call repair persons. Call Customer Service. You are put on hold after being told how much they value you as a customer. You listen to awful music for a hour or so. Finally, if you are lucky and not just cut off, a person picks up the phone who is glad to practice English on you. They start reading a list of questions that they are required to read: Is it plugged in and turned on? Do you have internet? Finally they reach their answer: Upgrade the Firmware. You ask how can I do that when it won't turn on? They tell you to call back when someone else will be there and hope you have a nice day.

Been shopping for a new washer and dryer, mostly be reading reviews. Buying appliances these days seems to be a crap shoot. My parents had a Maytag washer and dryer that lasted decades. The repairman was truly very lonely. I would pay top dollar for a washer and dryer that works for a decade and cleans and drys my clothes.

^Speed Queen, commercial grade (it's not coin-op). Top load washer will run about $1200, you will get 20 years out of it. Do your research, they make a similar unit that is more high-tech. That is not the one you want.

Republicans Fall Just Short in Virginia,

The 2023 election was another disappointing affair for Republicans. Kentucky and Ohio both produced results that should leave the GOP questioning what changes need to be made before the all-important 2024 election arrives. With that said, there were some bright spots. Specifically, in Virginia, Republicans showed a surprising level of strength despite falling short of taking the legislature. That's probably not what you are getting from the headlines this morning, but the numbers show an overperformance by the Glenn Youngkin-led GOP there.

Yet given the direction of these issues in our state, you’re likely perplexed as to who is really running Montgomery.

Much of the planet is holding its breath waiting for the next move in the war in Israel and wondering if it will spiral out of control into a wider regional war… Evil will always exist, but the greatest danger to free people are the so-called moderates that refuse to acknowledge or choose between good and evil. While most are unsuspecting, it is among the cowardly or undecided where Satan makes his greatest gains.

A wild crash on a California freeway was captured on video last week showing a car flip through the air after it struck a tire that popped off a pickup truck and was sent airborne. The accident happened Thursday on the Ronald Reagan Freeway in Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles. Anoop Khatra was driving behind a dark-colored Kia Soul in the left lane when her dashcam recorded the heart-pounding moment. A white pickup truck was driving in the lane adjacent to the Kia when the pickup’s front-left tire popped loose and shot out in front of the Kia, according to the video.

While most men accept the surface of things, the masters of men use the surface to mean many different things for their many different ends. If you wish to understand politics, do not listen merely to the words political people say but rather inspect below the surface for the necessities such people may face. The same applies to entire nations. On the surface level, we may still have de jure freedom and democracy in America, but below the surface, the government's necessary evils have expanded to a de facto tyranny of loosely aligned interests.

"When the NEA establishes ties with these groups and agrees to have official exchanges with them, it plays right into the propaganda maneuvers of these totalitarian governments.
