The slate is set for a Monday evening conference in the Republican House of Representatives as nine GOP politicians have registered by the deadline today to put their names in the nomination process. (snip) there will be a secret ballot vote on Tuesday. The absolute worst-case scenario is Tom Emmer (R-MN) who has just received the endorsement of Kevin McCarthy. Emmer wants to abolish the electoral college for presidential races in favor of a national popular vote. Unfortunately, Emmer likely carries around 70 automatic votes from the professionally Republican caucus. On the opposite side of that spectrum is Byron Donalds (R-FL) who is pure MAGA

My assumption is that Mike Johnson (R-LA), who is currently running for the Speakership of the House, will also go down to defeat. Nevertheless, in the interests of being clear about what kind of politicians are unacceptable for the Speakership we should explore his positions. No surprises:

Emmer followed later in March saying Trump getting involved in the GOP congressional primaries was “not gonna be helpful.”
Fast forward to 2023, Emmer is now the House Republican Whip and wants to be Speaker of the House.

It’s three weeks since Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy. The House speaker will need to accomplish the seemingly impossible job of uniting the GOP majority. Emmer of Minnesota jumped ahead as the top vote-getter on early round ballots and was battling Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana on a fifth ballot.
Others are dropping out including Florida newcomer Byron Donalds, who’s aligned with Donald Trump, and Kevin Hern of Oklahoma. The nominee will also need to win a majority in a House floor vote.

Friday afternoon, the Treasury Department reported that, despite a growing economy and low unemployment, the federal deficit shot up by $320 billion in fiscal year 2023. That’s unusual. But what’s really bizarre is why the deficit exploded.
According to the report, overall spending actually dropped by 2% compared with 2022 as the COVID-19 spending splurge abated.
What drove up the deficit this year was a sudden and completely unexpected 9% drop in tax revenues. Not only did revenues come up hundreds of billions lower than last year, but they were well below what everybody expected them to be.
