London - One of Ukraine’s closest and most vocal allies has now said it will stop sending arms to Kyiv, a major reversal that threatens to upend Europe’s strategic relationship with the country as it wages a counteroffensive against Russia. Poland’s decision was both sudden and predictable, coming after months of tensions over a temporary ban on Ukrainian grain imports to a number of European Union countries. It also follows a pattern of increasingly confrontational behavior towards Kyiv from Poland’s government, just weeks before a tight general election. And it could have implications for Ukraine’s attempts to push Russian forces

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.) says he is “concerned” about a decision to loosen the Senate’s dress code to allow senators to wear whatever they want on the chamber floor, arguing “we need to have standards.” Durbin, the No. 2-ranking Senate Democrat and chairman of the powerful Judiciary Committee, signaled he’s not ready to let hoodies, blue jeans or shorts become the norm on the Senate floor, which has been the venue of many important historic moments over the years. (Snip) Durbin acknowledged that changing the Senate’s dress code would accommodate his colleague, first-term Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who’s

Iran's parliament has passed a controversial bill that would increase prison terms and fines for women and girls who break its strict dress code. Those dressed "inappropriately" face up to 10 years in jail under the bill, for which a three-year "trial" was agreed. It still needs to be approved by the Guardian Council to become law. The move comes a year after protests erupted over the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, who was held by morality police for an allegedly improper hijab. Women burnt their headscarves or waved them in the air at the nationwide demonstrations against the

It’s official: Democrats make everything worse. It was a sentiment long felt by many in the country, but after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) recent decision to nix the Senate’s dress code and, in turn, obliterate the regard, respect, and dignity of the office, Schumer and the Democrats erased any doubt about ushering in societal rot and the nation’s decline. It’s an embarrassment, and every Democratic politician should be ashamed. And that includes Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), believed to be the impetus for Schumer’s decision to eliminate the dress code. But the prestige of the Senate shouldn’t be lowered

The price of oil continues to rise as Wall Street traders eye a potential supply deficit after Saudi Arabia and Russia extended supply cuts. Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude prices have climbed for three straight weeks to reach their highest peak since November and are now targeting their biggest quarterly jumps since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in the first quarter of 2022. That year, oil prices shot above $100 for the first time since 2014 amid the conflict as demand recovered from COVID-19 lockdowns. Meanwhile, the global benchmark Brent Crude ended 2022 near $86 a barrel on fears

National Democratic leaders are virtually all lined up behind President Joe Biden's 2024 reelection bid. But Democratic voters are a different story. While party voters lined up behind Biden in 2020 and are poised to do so again, they have some misgivings about the president, who is 80 years old and would be 82 at the start of a potential second term in 2025. In an August survey conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 69% of Democrats indicated that Biden would be too old to be effective for another term. And while 55% of Democrats indicated

Unions representing health care workers, fast food workers and other industries are increasingly flexing their power, as employees take to the picket lines this summer. Across industries, workers are seeking improved benefits, better working conditions and most commonly, increased wages. In California, nearly 1 million fast food and healthcare workers are set to get a major raise after a deal was announced earlier this week between labor unions and industries. Under the new bill, most of California's 500,000 fast food workers will be paid at least $20 per hour next year. And a separate bill will increase health care workers'

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) issued an apology for vaping and displaying disruptive behavior during a Beetlejuice production, according to a statement her campaign team released Friday evening. Boebert apologized for her behavior and expressed regret for not telling the truth about whether she had vaped during the production, which later led to her removal from the crowd by theater staff. The apology comes just days after it was reported the Colorado Republican had been removed from the theater for “vaping, singing, [and] causing a disturbance” to other patrons, according to a city incident report. “The past few days have been

Hundreds of asylum seekers flock to a Lower Manhattan federal building in the pre-dawn hours each day in a desperate bid to get benefits, services and keep court appointments — as confusion continues to reign during the Big Apple migrant crisis. The massive queue, nearly entirely made of migrants bused to the five boroughs from the US border, forms outside the JacobK. Javits Federal Building every morning. Those who join are seeking everything from asylum to work permits — with scores of them pitching up and spending the night on the sidewalk and using the nearby bushes as a toilet.

Climate change isn’t just creating havoc for the living. It’s coming for our dead. Great deluges of rain submerge graves and markers. Swift floods set vaults afloat. Slopes erode in scenic hillside cemeteries. And at the seaside, higher seas and storm surges swamp cemeteries and sweep sand away. For Sherene Johnson’s family, it’s the rain. Ten members of her family are buried in Brighton Memorial Gardens, a predominantly African American cemetery in Brighton, Alabama. Parts of the cemetery and the town have flooded in the past but not as often as they do today, said Johnson, a city councilwoman. The

California Gov. Gavin Newsom confirmed on Sunday that he is prepared to appoint an "interim" replacement for Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., if she leaves office early. Newsom made the statement during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. The ailing Feinstein has confirmed that she will not run for re-election in 2024, but speculation about her health has raised questions about whether she will remain in office until her current term ends. (Snip) Lee lashed out at Newsom on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday night. "I am troubled by the Governor’s remarks," she wrote.

Oil prices are surging again, but the Biden administration's biggest weapon for bringing them down has much less ammunition.
Last year, the federal government drained 180 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as oil prices soared in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the turmoil in energy markets that followed. Flooding the market with all that supply helped bring oil prices down — and helped cool inflation, which had shot up as well. Earlier this year, the administration took some steps to start refilling the SPR. But while it has ticked up slightly, the level remains near
