A 63-year-old hiker was rescued Friday at Grand Canyon National Park after he was injured in a fall and his group of friends left him behind to continue their “backpacking adventure,” authorities said. Five friends were backpacking on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park along the Kanab Creek when one of them, a 63-year-old male, fell and suffered a traumatic injury to his shoulder, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue said.

It seems to me like the writer worked to spin this story and left out some facts.
So if someone had been left behind would he be able to fit on the helicopter? Or would he have to be left behind and wait alone until the next morning to try to hike out. The helicopter would have a full complement of medical people and there may have only been room for the patient. Perhaps the helicopter people told them to leave him because they knew there wasn't room. I just don't trust much of anything in the news media anymore.

Isn't there some kind of law about this such as reckless abandonment? That is horrible.

The hikers had been hiking for three days and had three more days ahead of them when one suffered an injury. Have to wonder what they had in the way of surplus supplies. Take too long and five hikers would need rescuing instead of one. The hikers had called for help and had been notified that help was on the way before they left the injured hiker. Could they have stayed with the injured hiker and cut their hike short? I would think one of the hikers should have stayed behind. The rescuers were critical of the fact that nobody stayed behind.

It's possible those men weren't even prepared for a backyard sleepover. Certainly not for a multi-day hike through the mountains. They seemed untrained, naive, selfish, and maybe even stupid.

Mountain climbers are known for leaving the injured behind. On Mt Everest they sometimes give nicknames to the dead bodies who succumed to the elements.

Last year when I celebrated a certain milestone birthday, I looked back at some of the choices I had made in my life. When I thought about some of the friends I picked, I said to myself: "What was I thinking?" And when I looked back at some of the women I pursued, again I asked myself, "What I was thinking?"
Yes, this man definitely needs to find himself a new set of friends.

"abandoned him".....leaving him with a comm device that had rescuers on the way, and him in contact with them. I wouldn't be surprised if he told them he'd be OK as he waited for the rescuers, and to go on. I would have, as long as I had comms with rescue coming.
Reading the story, it's quite different than the typical AssPress misleading headline.

Not quite, #20: They reportedly took the device with them when they left.
the other four members of the group left with the device and “continued on their backpacking adventures – leaving the injured hiker behind alone,”

Misleading headline. But buddies should have stayed. Would only have missed a few hours of hiking. Would have needed to stop soon for the night anyway.
