Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) will not seek a second term next year, he announced on Wednesday.
Romney, 76, said in an interview that his decision to not run again was heavily influenced by his age and his prediction that his second term would be less effective than his first. “It’s very difficult for the House to operate, from what I can tell,” Romney said. “And perhaps more importantly, we’re probably going to have either Trump or Biden as our next president. And Biden is unable to lead on important matters and Trump is unwilling to lead on important matters.”
Inflation accelerated for a second straight month in August, reversing previous declines as consumers continued to grapple with the rising cost of everyday goods.
The Labor Department said Wednesday that the consumer price index, a broad measure of the price for everyday goods including gasoline, groceries and rents, rose 0.6% in August from the previous month, in line with estimates. It marked the steepest monthly increase this year, underscoring the challenge in taming high inflation.
Prices climbed 3.7% from the same time last year, faster than both the 3.2% reading in July and the 3.6% estimate from Refinitiv economists.
The White House intends to urge the top executives of several mainstream news outlets to “ramp up” their scrutiny of House Republicans one day after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy opened an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, according to a draft letter obtained by CNN.
“It’s time for the media to ramp up its scrutiny of House Republicans for opening an impeachment inquiry based on lies,” Ian Sams, a spokesman for the White House Counsel’s Office, wrote in the draft letter, which is expected to be sent on Wednesday.

Convicted killer and escaped convict Danelo Cavalcante was nabbed by authorities Wednesday after evading search teams for two weeks by breaking into suburban homes for food and hiding out in the Pennsylvania woods.
Cavalcante – who escaped from Chester County Prison on Aug. 31 – was arrested without incident when K9s sniffed him out lying underneath leaves and wood on top of a stolen rifle, sources told CBS Philadelphia and CNN. Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio claimed federal prosecutors tried to “coerce” him into implicating former President Donald Trump in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Last week, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly sentenced Tarrio to a record-high 22 years in prison despite not being in Washington, DC, on January 6.
“I don’t know what instructions I would give somebody at that point … I’m not speaking. I have no function. So there was no communication,” Tarrio said in a phone interview with the Washington Post.

BP chief executive officer Bernard Looney has resigned after less than four years on the job, the London-based oil producer announced Tuesday.
Looney took over as CEO of BP in 2020 after previously leading BP's Upstream group, focused on exploration and production. The resignation of Looney is effective immediately. The company's Chief Financial Officer Murray Auchincloss will serve as interim CEO, BP said. The change comes as Looney informed the company that he was not "fully transparent in his previous disclosures" about relationships with colleagues prior to becoming CEO, BP said.

The California legislature passed a bill Friday that would threaten parents with losing custody of their children if they question their child’s supposed desire to undergo disfiguring hormone regimens or surgeries to appear more like the opposite sex.
Assembly Bill 957 was initially proposed to require courts to consider whether parents were “affirming” a child’s identification as transgender in custody cases. The legislation was later amended in June to declare parents who aren’t deemed sufficiently “affirming” liable for child abuse.
In a tweet sent out over the weekend, Rob “Meathead” Reiner declared that “For our Democracy to survive, two things have to happen. Donald Trump needs to be Convicted for Jan. 6th and there can be no Third Party Candidate.”
Reiner’s comment was so blatantly anti-democratic that it elicited an avalanche of criticism, some of it from leftists who didn’t particularly like the idea of barring third-party candidates.
