A medicine used by millions of Americans for a stuffy nose does not work, a Food and Drug Administration panel ruled today.
Phenylephrine is the most common active compound in over-the-counter drugs like Benadryl Allergy Plus Congestion, Sudafed PE, and Tylenol Cold and Flu Severe Day & Night.
But an FDA panel said after a two-day review that the oral decongestant ‘is not effective’ at standard or even high doses compared to a placebo.Their ruling is not binding but strongly suggests the agency could soon heed their advice and pull its approval, forcing companies to pull or reformulate their products.

Maybe, just maybe, that's why these products do not have an abuse problem...
Because they don't do anything

Phenylephrine was approved by the FDA in the 1970s to shrink the dilated blood vessels in the nose, relieving nasal and sinus congestion.
So, what was the criterion applied to approve it 50 years ago? Money under the table? Coin toss?

Lying FDA strikes again!
I can say for a fact that Phenylephrine HCl does help unclog and dry up sinuses because I use it every night before going to bed so my nasal passages open up and I don't end up having to breathe through my mouth. It works great and is inexpensive. I have better luck with it alone than I do mixed with the other big-name products mentioned in the article. I suspect that being cheap with no active patent for making big money is the real reason for these "findings". I will be interesting what kind of expensive product with a patent will be sold to replace it. It is ALL about the money (especially the FDA), health is only a side effect.

okay, and the Covid 19 shot works... wink wink. I get it. FDA lost all credibility in my book.

Hmmm, is there another drug waiting in the wings to take the place of Benedryl?? I have a bad reaction to almost every decongestant on the market, OTC or prescription except benedryl and one other drug. This just sounds like some big pharma has something else they want to make money off of waiting to take the place of these drugs.

So the off the shelf formula is of little or no benefit in this research, but the behind the counter decongestant-have to sign for it-limited amounts allowed to purchase per year/season (whatever) is still available? Works for me.

I have so many questions and suspicions about this FDA finding. Why do I fear this decision means something will replace it that just might have some
truly harmful effects.

For those who actually USE and benefit from these products......a giant middle finger to the pukes at FDA.
I'm sure that there is some money to be made for the FDA pukes in doing this. They have zero interest in human health, only in their bank accounts.

The trouble is I don't trust the FDA to run an honest study. Check in the wings for a Democrat contributor with a competing product. Or see if big pharmacy want to add some mRNA to the product.
It's a popular product. It would be perfect to taint with their negative population poisons.

All bullsh**. I have used most of those products and they do work, for me anyway I used them for freakin decades. Pull them and then what. Oh, they'll probably come out with something ten times more expensive.

How much money changed hands under the table with officials at the FDA on that one?

I remember bad colds when I was little (1950's.) Stuffy nose, face hurts, and going to school with little packs of kleenex to wipe my nose. Then along came Actifed. It would dry up my nose and make the face pain go away. I considered it a miracle drug. They did work. So of course they will be pulled. I have prescription Claritin right now, great pill. Wonder how long this will be allowed.

Those original formula Benadryl used to work great.
But that was back in the 1960's.
Then they changed the formula into something else.

The Benedryl in this article is noted only because it is a combination drug with phenylephrine. There is no action being taken (as of now) on diphenhydramine (Benadryl).

We never know any more who to believe, but folks, You can believe me.
If big pharma comes up with something to replace Phenylephrine it will be much more expensive.

iirc, di-phenhydramine hcl is the active ingredient in good old benadryl. accept no substitutes, as the old saying goes;
b/c we've heard numerous reports from MD's over many years that it's cheap, efficacious--and has never been improved upon.
likewise, iirc, robitussin is based upon a safe natural substance for children-when by itself-which is called guafenisin [sp?].
changing or adding to that remedy , with hyped-up or 'severe' ingredients, would not help the little ones.
the otc items listed in the article were changed, it would seem , and given different names, b/c they were combined w/ all manner of
other substances, called 'plus' or 'severe'--whatever those monikers may contain. best to read your labels!

Sudafed works for me! Idiots!

I can say for sure from my experience that both products work great for me. I have to wonder if one reason they want to pull Sudafed is because of the ingredients in this drug that criminals use to make their street drugs with.

I think this is right. Pseudoephedrine works well (the original Sudafed, available only behind the pharmacy counter from a pharmacist). Phenylephrine did not work (the off-the-shelf version). Good riddance.

This is pure bovine excrement. Benadryl generally works if used judiciously. I even gave it to my dog when his face swelled up after being stung by a bee. Did someone forget their annual tribute to the FDA? How is Brandon supposed to glean his 10 percent?
