As Trump Attacks, DeSantis Touts ‘Courage’

When schools, stadiums, and churches were locked and empty, hundreds of thousands of Americans poured into the streets to protest the police killing of George Floyd in the summer of 2020, setting up an uncomfortable conflict between public health and social justice during the early days of the pandemic in America. More than a thousand experts and activists, including many from academia, weighed in. Yes, they wrote in an open letter that quickly went viral, social distancing remained an “effective” method to slow the spread, but “white supremacy is a lethal public health issue that predates and contributes to COVID-19.”

Comments:

For the record, I will vote for President Trump if he is the nominee. I post articles like this because I think a vigorous primary process is important to prepare the ultimate nominee. “Iron sharpens iron.“

The open border with the invaders sent all over USA told me everything I needed to know about the power hungry mob in DC. The invaders were not tested nor isolated. (we lived in TX at the time). All this while Americans were losing jobs by not getting the shot. Thank you Governor DeSantis. It never made sense to me that some stores could remain opened while others had to close.

When it was time for Sam Beyda, then a freshman at Columbia University, to take his Calculus I midterm, the professor told students they had 90 minutes. But the exam would be administered online. And even though every student was expected to take it alone, in their dorms or apartments or at the library, it wouldn’t be proctored. And they had 24 hours to turn it in. “Anyone who hears that knows it’s a free-for-all,” Beyda told me. Beyda, an economics major, said students texted each other answers; looked up solutions on Chegg, a crowdsourced website with answers to exam questions; and used calculators, which were technically verboten.

A couple of recent articles in The New York Times show just how annoyed the national media is getting at so far being unable to find something wrong with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Why hasn’t he called Donald Trump a fathead on Twitter yet?! Where are all the women who want to accuse him of being a rapist?! Why won’t he back down from positions that are popular with voters?! Admittedly, it’s never too late for any one of those scenarios to become a reality, and Republicans rarely justify high hopes. But for now, the Times has had to settle on attacking DeSantis for not being more readily attackable.
'Greater Idaho' movement to absorb conservative

A campaign to have rural eastern Oregon effectively secede from the blue state and join more conservative Idaho is gaining steam as leaders from both states express support for relocating the border between them. Former Oregon House Speaker Mark Simmons penned an op-ed in the Idaho Statesman, a daily newspaper, over the weekend to explain why he supports the so-called Greater Idaho movement, which seeks to incorporate about 13 Oregon counties, or 63% of the state's landmass and 9% of its population, within Idaho's borders. "Idaho would have the satisfaction of freeing rural, conservative communities from progressive blue-state law," wrote Simmons.

Marjorie Taylor Greene wants Americans to get a national divorce, and the only question is who gets custody of Puerto Rico. Actually there are other questions, such as: why the hell are we talking about this again? And: why is a member of the United States House of Representatives advocating breaking up the United States? And: which third party gets to be the divorce lawyer? Because there is no way Canada is telling me how much alimony I have to pay. For those of you leading normal and productive lives, this latest brain-plague began on Twitter when Congresswoman Greene declared, “We need a national divorce. We need to separate

In “The Wonderful Tar Baby Story,” Uncle Remus told about the one time Brer Fox outsmarted Brer Rabbit. Brer Fox mixes tar with turpentine to create a “Tar Baby” and sets his creation in the road. Brer Rabbit comes by and gets increasingly offended when the Tar Baby fails to acknowledge him. Brer Rabbit gets so incensed he decides to “bus’ you wide open,” only to get stuck, head, arms, legs, and all, in the tar. Oddly, Uncle Remus never tells us how (or whether) Brer Rabbit ended up as Brer Fox’s dinner. News said recently, “Coal’s survival beyond 2030 is not consistent with [President] Biden’s emission goals.”

Attorney Andrew McCarthy said Emily Kohrs, the forewoman of a special grand jury as part of the Georgia criminal probe into former President Trump, may have dealt "a terrible blow" to prosecutors with her unusual media tour this week. In a pair of appearances on CNN and NBC News, Kohrs appeared to strongly hint that Trump was among those recommended for criminal charges while laughing, joking and making animated facial expressions that seemed to provide answers she knew she shouldn't be offering. McCarthy, a senior fellow at the National Review Institute, believes any "fair-mind lawyer" would object to her behavior. "This is a terrible thing. She basically

Meghan Markle is said to be "overwhelmed" following all the negative scrutiny she and Prince Harry have received from their tell-alls, leaving many to wonder if they’ll attend the coronation. Harry’s father, King Charles III, will be crowned alongside Camilla, the queen consort, on May 6 at London’s Westminster Abbey. It’s uncertain whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will attend. "Meghan is upset and overwhelmed," Kinsey Schofield, host of the "To Di For Daily" podcast, told Fox News Digital. "It’s not that Meghan feels excluded with the planning," she claimed. White students were shown in the video fanning and feeding Black students. "It was in good fun. There was no political agenda behind it," the teacher said. He said the video was being "maliciously used."

It's been a year since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The fierce resistance is in part thanks to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose determination has surprised many, above all Vladimir Putin. It's a world record. No leader before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has managed to hold an address every single day for a straight year. The leader records video statements in his office, a bunker or elsewhere, chronicling the war against his country. The presidential addresses document how he and his country have changed since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.

The Ukraine mess is daily looking more like the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939, a meat grinder that took 500,000 lives. That three-year conflict became a savage proxy war and prelude for the belligerents of World War II. The Ukraine battlefield is proving to be a similar laboratory of death. New lethal weaponry and tactics are introduced, modified -- and always improved -- from drones to guided missiles to internet-fed artillery. Likewise, a similar pre-global war lineup of the eventual adversaries is emerging in preview of a much larger, much scarier war to come.

On Sunday night, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared on “Life, Liberty, and Levin” on Fox News, purportedly to promote his new book, The Courage to Be Free, which comes out this week. While DeSantis has not yet declared that he’s running for president, he certainly sounded like a man who’s making the case for his candidacy. Or, if not, he’s making a case for conservatism as the path to American success and prosperity— the subtitle of the book is “Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival.” As my colleague Stephen Green pointed out earlier today: DeSantis isn’t traveling to early presidential primary states like Iowa or New Hamphire, at least not yet. Social media is awash right now with wild rumors about the condition of Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, who has been hospitalized for depression—a hospitalization that will apparently last a month or longer. We should await some facts or other kinds of confirmation before drawing conclusions about nefarious political calculations, but it is confirmed that his wife and children have fled the country to “avoid media attention.” I don’t know much about treating what appears to be severe depression (a month in the hospital?), but common sense would suggest the presence of wife and family is instrumental for treatment and recovery. No wonder there are rumors spreading.

A Miami judge declined to block Florida’s 15-week abortion ban, HB 5, on Friday in a lawsuit brought by clergy members of several different faiths. The clergy members — three rabbis, a Unitarian Universalist minister, an Episcopal Church priest, a Buddhist lama, and a United Church of Christ reverend — filed separate lawsuits against the State of Florida in August claiming that the law violates their rights to freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Those lawsuits have since been consolidated into one case. The clergy members argue in their complaint that the law puts them “at risk of prosecution for counseling women, girls, and families to obtain an abortion

Moving at the legal equivalent of lightning speed, Smith is gathering evidence against the former president on two fronts: his taking a cache of classified documents to his Mar-a-Lago resort and Trump’s role
