Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has lost her bid for re-election as the race heads to runoff without her after no candidate reached the required 50% vote threshold to be elected. Lightfoot faced challenges from eight other candidates in the race, including Chicago Public Schools CEO and city budget director Paul Vallas, who held a significant double-digit lead in the polls ahead of Election Day.
Leading up to the election, Lightfoot also narrowly trailed Brandon Johnson, a member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, by two points, and was in a dead heat with Democratic Rep. Jesus "Chuy" Garcia who represents Illinois's 4th Congressional District.

Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News highlights former House Speaker Paul Ryan’s alleged influence over Fox News Channel’s (FNC) editorial control, reportedly urging the network to move away from former President Donald Trump.
Dominion filed the lawsuit months after the 2020 presidential election, asserting that FNC essentially suggested that Dominion rigged the voting systems, contributing to Trump’s loss. “Fox, one of the most powerful media companies in the United States, give life to a manufactured storyline about election fraud that cast a then-libel known voting machine company called Dominion as the villain,” a copy of Dominion’s complaint reads, asserting that Fox News opted

Salesforce has already slashed thousands of workers from its ranks this year.
But the cloud-based software company may still be paying millions to harness the star power of actor Matthew McConaughey.
Salesforce reportedly agreed to pay McConaughey $10 million a year to serve as its "creative advisor and TV pitchman," The Wall Street Journal said Tuesday, citing people familiar with the arrangement.
However, it's unclear what the terms of the contract are or when the contract even began. Representatives for Salesforce declined Insider's request for a comment. Last year, McConaughey starred in the company's Super Bowl ad, donning an astronaut suit aboard a hot air balloon.

FBI director Christopher Wray on Tuesday spoke publicly for the first time on the bureau's assessment that the COVID-19 virus "most likely" originated from a potential lab incident in Wuhan, China.
He also faulted the Chinese government in an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier for, he said, trying to thwart the work of U.S. agencies investigating the beginnings of the global pandemic. "The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan," he said. Wray's comments came after a report in the Wall Street Journal, not independently confirmed by ABC News,

KYIV, Ukraine — Drones that the Kremlin said were launched by Ukraine flew deep inside Russian territory, including one that got within 100 kilometers (60 miles) of Moscow, signaling breaches in Russian defenses as President Vladimir Putin ordered stepped-up protection at the border.
Officials said the drones caused no injuries and did not inflict any significant damage, but the attacks on Monday night and Tuesday morning raised questions about Russian defense capabilities more than a year after the country’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor.
Moscow blamed Kyiv for the assaults. Ukrainian officials did not immediately claim responsibility, but they similarly avoided directly acknowledging responsibility for past strikes

The margin of victory in Ron DeSantis’s 2022 re-election win even surprised the Florida governor. Not to get ahead of ourselves, but could the popular Republican repeat his 19-point win on the national stage in the 2024 presidential election? Let’s let that marinate a bit, as we continue.
If your name isn’t Donald Trump or you’re not an unwavering fan of the former president, the 2024 GOP so far looks petty much like this:
Trump launched his candidacy to avenge his loss against Joe Biden on November 15, 2022 — even though he continues to insist he won in 2020. Former South Carolina governor and UN ambassador during Trump’s presidency, Nikki Haley

One name continues to haunt the Star Wars universe, specifically “The Mandalorian,” and that name is Gina Carano.
Did you know a new season of “The Mandalorian” starts on Wednesday?
Unless you’ve been really looking forward to it or you stumbled on the announcement somewhere in your social media adventures, you probably didn’t even know the show was up for its third season. On a list of Disney+’s offerings, “The Mandalorian” sits up near the very top and yet the hype for it seems to have dissipated enough to where there’s not as much excitement for the show as there was previously.

Data analyzed by the organization Murder Accountability Project (MAP) revealed that the U.S. murder “clearance rate,” which reflects the proportion of total homicides solved by police, dropped to the lowest point ever on record in 2020.
Whereas the FBI reported over 90 percent of homicides were solved in the mid 1960s, that number has continuously declined over the decades, dropping sharply between 2015 and 2020, to an all-time low of just above 50 percent.
“We’re on the verge of being the first developed nation where the majority of homicides go uncleared,” MAP founder Thomas Hargrove explained to the Guardian.

WASHINGTON — Conservative justices holding the Supreme Court’s majority pressed skeptical questions Tuesday about President Joe Biden’s plan to wipe away or reduce student loans held by millions of Americans.
The high court, with its 6-3 conservative majority, heard arguments on two challenges to the plan, which has so far been blocked by Republican-appointed judges on lower courts.
Arguments were scheduled to last two hours but were likely to go much longer. The public could listen in on the AP youtube channel or on the court’s website.
Several conservative justices spent time grilling the Biden administration’s top Supreme Court lawyer, Elizabeth Prelogar, and suggested that the administration had exceeded its authority

March can’t come soon enough for ratings-challenged CNN.
The long-struggling network is on pace to finish February with its smallest monthly audience among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults age 25-54 since June 2014.
"Anderson Cooper 360," "The Lead with Jake Tapper" and Wolf Blitzer’s "Situation Room" are on pace to their smallest audiences since that same month among the critical demo, while "Inside Politics" is on pace for its least-viewed month among the category since August 2005. "CNN This Morning," the Don Lemon-centered a.m. show that has generated a ton of negative publicity, is on pace to finish February with its smallest monthly audience

The Club for Growth, a leading conservative campaign group, will host a donor retreat in Palm Beach, Florida this weekend. Most of the 2024 potential or declared Republican candidates are invited and will be there, all except for one noticeable exception – Donald Trump. Though the retreat will be held near Mar-a-Lago, Trump is not invited. He and the group had a falling out during the 2022 midterm cycle and apparently that has not been repaired.
Trump has worked with the Club for Growth in the past. However, the two found themselves at odds during the 2022 midterm elections on candidate endorsements. And, Trump was angry about the group’s publishing

On Sunday night, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared on “Life, Liberty, and Levin” on Fox News, purportedly to promote his new book, The Courage to Be Free, which comes out this week. While DeSantis has not yet declared that he’s running for president, he certainly sounded like a man who’s making the case for his candidacy. Or, if not, he’s making a case for conservatism as the path to American success and prosperity— the subtitle of the book is “Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival.”
As my colleague Stephen Green pointed out earlier today:
DeSantis isn’t traveling to early presidential primary states like Iowa or New Hamphire, at least not yet. Instead,
