When it was time for Sam Beyda, then a freshman at Columbia University, to take his Calculus I midterm, the professor told students they had 90 minutes. But the exam would be administered online. And even though every student was expected to take it alone, in their dorms or apartments or at the library, it wouldn’t be proctored. And they had 24 hours to turn it in. “Anyone who hears that knows it’s a free-for-all,” Beyda told me. Beyda, an economics major, said students texted each other answers; looked up solutions on Chegg, a crowdsourced website with answers to exam questions; and used calculators, which were technically verboten.

I taught a graduate level engineering class as an adjunct instructor. I told the class that I would treat them with respect and as professionals and I expected the same from them. Take home exams and open books and notes, but no collaboration and show your work. When I got the same nutty and incorrect solution from three students, I failed them and ended their grad school adventure. My department chairman supported me. I won’t teach in the university anymore where, it seems, they want grades and credit but not knowledge. I hate liars and thieves.

There is a long history of the frats and sororities pooling notes, prior tests, homework, quizzes, for every class, every prof on campus...and/or steering their members to those classes where they have copies of all the tests/questions. Writing assignments done in a "group setting" with an older member "Helping" underclassmen with their assignments IE: doing it for them or dictating it to them...editing/rewriting. Many of the Teachers are lazy and give the same exact test for years. Same questions, same order....even though the books used in the class have to be "Latest edition" costing hundreds of dollars. When I was in Nursing school I had one semester where my book bill alone was $1400, and those same books had no re-sale value because newer editions were required the next year, just as older editions couldn't be used when I bought mine. On the "Plus" side, it was easy to get your books for 1/2 price...there were people outside the bookstore offering to put YOUR books on their financial aid card for 1/2 price paid in cash. Generally "young men of color" that never actually attended their classes, just got the loans and grants, Methinks perhaps they are now saddled with debts, nothing to show for it.

The perfidy of the undergraduate in competition for higher grades is always there. Either the instructor recognizes this and proceeds accordingly, or each of the runny-nose bastidges gets his, hers or its “A”.

This has always gone on...cheating to make up for a lack of study and handwork. It’s just that now it’s a common occurrence since we have had a moral collapse in this country. The slackers today see nothing wrong with cheating and some dumba$$ courses like gender studies pass everyone anyway.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, lost her re-election bid Monday night, and critics are celebrating the end of her term. Under Lightfoot, Chicago has seen soaring crime rates, which became a theme of her opponents' criticism. In 2021, homicides in Chicago rose to their highest numbers in 25 years, outpacing other crime-ridden cities like New York City and Los Angeles. Throughout her tenure, the mayor has been blasted for her poor relationship with law enforcement, as the city's police department lost a significant number of officers in recent years amid the rise in crime.

For years, Democrats have spread the message that America is irredeemable, that our original sin defines our present and the future is dependent on our faith in government — not in each other. I was born in 1965, two years after Dr. King said, “I Have a Dream,” and I am living proof that American dreams do come true. My mom spent her teenage years surrounded by segregation. My granddaddy, her father, had to step off the sidewalk to let white folks pass. He had to drop out of school in the third grade to pick cotton. When I was a kid, I remember granddaddy would

A couple of recent articles in The New York Times show just how annoyed the national media is getting at so far being unable to find something wrong with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Why hasn’t he called Donald Trump a fathead on Twitter yet?! Where are all the women who want to accuse him of being a rapist?! Why won’t he back down from positions that are popular with voters?! Admittedly, it’s never too late for any one of those scenarios to become a reality, and Republicans rarely justify high hopes. But for now, the Times has had to settle on attacking DeSantis for not being more readily attackable.

A campaign to have rural eastern Oregon effectively secede from the blue state and join more conservative Idaho is gaining steam as leaders from both states express support for relocating the border between them. Former Oregon House Speaker Mark Simmons penned an op-ed in the Idaho Statesman, a daily newspaper, over the weekend to explain why he supports the so-called Greater Idaho movement, which seeks to incorporate about 13 Oregon counties, or 63% of the state's landmass and 9% of its population, within Idaho's borders. "Idaho would have the satisfaction of freeing rural, conservative communities from progressive blue-state law," wrote Simmons.

When schools, stadiums, and churches were locked and empty, hundreds of thousands of Americans poured into the streets to protest the police killing of George Floyd in the summer of 2020, setting up an uncomfortable conflict between public health and social justice during the early days of the pandemic in America. More than a thousand experts and activists, including many from academia, weighed in. Yes, they wrote in an open letter that quickly went viral, social distancing remained an “effective” method to slow the spread, but “white supremacy is a lethal public health issue that predates and contributes to COVID-19.”

In “The Wonderful Tar Baby Story,” Uncle Remus told about the one time Brer Fox outsmarted Brer Rabbit. Brer Fox mixes tar with turpentine to create a “Tar Baby” and sets his creation in the road. Brer Rabbit comes by and gets increasingly offended when the Tar Baby fails to acknowledge him. Brer Rabbit gets so incensed he decides to “bus’ you wide open,” only to get stuck, head, arms, legs, and all, in the tar. Oddly, Uncle Remus never tells us how (or whether) Brer Rabbit ended up as Brer Fox’s dinner. News said recently, “Coal’s survival beyond 2030 is not consistent with [President] Biden’s emission goals.”

The bill, introduced last month, would establish a People’s Housing Assistance Fund Demonstration Program to give 12 monthly thousand-dollar payments to those suffering from homelessness or who are on the brink of becoming homeless. “Payments may be used for rent, emergency expenses, food, child care or other goods or services of the participant’s choosing,” the bill states. People who spend more than 50 percent of their monthly household income on rent, and those who earn 60% or less of the area median income would also be eligible for the funding.

Biden announced the plan before the 2018 election in order to fool the youths to vote for Democrats. Biden claimed he has the authority to wipe student loan payments under a law known as the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students (HEROES) Act, which initially intended to benefit service members deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq by waiving their student loan debt. Biden applied it to all students regardless of their contributions to the US military.
