The U.S. Department of the Interior announced Thursday that it has given new names to five places that previously included a racist term for a Native American woman.
The renamed sites are in California, North Dakota, Tennessee and Texas, completing a yearlong process to remove the historically offensive word “squaw” from geographic names across the country.

Well now that all the important problems are solved, maybe they can get started on some of the dumb stuff. But first I have to take my dog Enward for a walk.

Squaw Mountain in Evergreen Colorado is now some unpronounceable name. It sits right between Chief and Papoose mountains. Everytime we locals look at the changed signs, it reminds us that there sure are a lot of idiots in this world!!

The Squaw Mountain in Evergreen Colorado is now "Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain." Now isn't that memorable and catchy! I'll be amazed if it doesn't cause numerous accidents as people try to pronounce it while driving! Mestaa’ėhehe Pass Road. Take that GPS! Yes, so smart!! s/o

Squaw Valley ski resort is an evil corporation and has been for a long time. I have skied there in the past on the most treacherous slopes and was thrilled beyond expression. But after I found out about their fascist policies and practices about 30 years ago I stopped going there. I know a lot of Tahoe locals that despise this place. Heavenly Valley comes in second in the race for the bottom. Both great mountains but horrible management. But the local politicians get their pockets stuffed, so whatever...

In the Algonquin tribe language, the word "squaw" meant woman. Do you think they were racists?

I think a more appropriat name for the various "squaw" sites is "perpetuaelly agrieved". There, that should make them happy.

Found out from 23 and Me I am 2,3% Native American--the Micmac tribe of the Algonquin Nation.. Their name for woman by the way is Squaw. I the early 1700's my forbearer had a wife who died in Canada and then married an Indian Squaw hence the 2.3 % heritage I proudly have. More than the senator for Massachusetts Lie-a-watha. Just sayin...

#6, I don't get the apostrophe in the name. What does that mean? How do you pronounce it? the article doesn't say what the original names are. How are we to know what they're talking about?

Where exactly did the term, "squaw" come from.? Was it a pejorative when originally used? Did it become one because of racist (Democrat) sneering?

Now that you have greatly improved the life of millions of Americans by this name change, can you do something about high energy costs, inflation, and open borders?

Good for them. The government killed, imprisoned, stole, starved and moved Native Americans from their homes but now want to be nice by changing names. Too bad they can't change what they did to those people.

we're getting to be just like the animal kingdom by dividing ourselves into "protected species" categories, how good is that for a step backward in evolution?

A few months ago my town's local newspaper printed an editorial regarding the name changing submitted by a local rescue official. When they are racing to an emergency the dispatcher is not going to indicate the location as We Can No Say Butte, it is going to be Squaw Butte.

I am offended, micro-agressed, triggered actually! by the use of the term 'Native Americans' for a group who were originally Siberian migrants. They may have arrived here first, but they did a poor job of stewardship of the USA. All the proof needed for that statement, is the fact they they never created a Bureau of Land Management. Worse still, squaws were woefully under-represented in their ruling councils.

Who decides when a word becomes pejorative?
What I'm reading is that it's an Englsh word derived from various Native American languages for generalzed terms like woman, wife, etc. The etymology goes back to the mid-17th century when Native American languages became of interest to Europeans. All languages borrow words from other languages.
