Washington - With Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., wielding the gavel as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, President Joe Biden outpaced Donald Trump and Barack Obama in confirming federal judges at the midpoint of their respective terms. The new judges are part of a historic transformation of the federal bench in terms of race, gender, ethnicity and experience, including in federal courtrooms in Chicago. Until Biden, most federal judges were white males, with the door closed to almost all other lawyers.(Snip) Looking ahead, the issue will be filling vacancies from states with GOP senators who may want to block Biden’s lifetime appointments.

Diversity can be nice to have; but not at the expense of merit. At least "Affirmative Action" claimed to take the best but favor minorities if candidates had arguably equal qualifications. This woke stuff doesn't even pretend to pursue the best qualified or the hardest worker -- those are now condemned as "white supremacist" goals. The quality of work results cannot be increased by making increased diversity the top priority. The goals conflict, or are at best orthogonal to each other.

It's always white guys telling younger white guys to step back so the "Le Plat Du Jour" minority can finally be equal to all these unemployed white guys.. The older guy is the visionary, the artist who, noticing a smudge on a museum masterpiece, whips out a brush and smears it out-- only this is no ordinary picture. But... The eyesore is gone! The idyll is restored. At last the bells in the little village church can ring out, without shame. But... most of all... An Angel Has Earned His Wings! See? He , he told us... But notice how these heroic gentlemen never vacate their own spot to uplift the downtrodden? it's always somebody else's. But think a minute: how many unemployed great eminences have you met? see? It's a plain fact: nobody can be such a imminent personage without a fancy job!

Labor law is a different animal, requiring a lot of lawyerly skils. But becaue the area is so speialize, nd operates under different rules, going from successful labor lawyer to federal judge is not necessarily an easy transition.

FTA: Durbin said, “if there is clearly a discriminatory effort being made to keep certain people off the bench,” he would consider suspending that tradition. He'll allow senators to have veto power over picks in their home state, unless they veto the affirmative action picks that he wants. So in other words, he will be suspending this tradition.
