In the dark hours of June 13, 1942, a German U-boat surfaced off the coast of Long Island. Four saboteurs, under the leadership of one George Dasch, buried explosives beneath the sands of Amagansett as part of an elaborate plan to blow up Astoria’s Hell Gate Bridge, along with chemical plants being used in the American war effort. (Snip) But his investigation didn’t follow standard military protocols. Haffenden stopped at Millie’s Inn by Napeague Beach for dinner with a few known organized crime associates. They were essential to a top secret surveillance network he had created with the help of the Mafia.

The payback was the government allowing the mafia to get in the drug running business unimpeded. Heroin came to Harlem, and the downhill slide began in the late 40's and continues to this day. Harlem went from a black neighborhood, to a slum in short order and a dangerous slum at that.

Let me get this straight. So, the main reason we aren't speaking German today is because of the mob? I dunno about this one. But you know, the mob does have its principles.

Hammond - A judge has ordered Franciscan Health Hammond’s emergency room to keep its doors open for another nine months. Lake Superior Court Judge Bruce D. Parent granted Thursday afternoon the preliminary injunction Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. requested this week to prevent the 124-year-old hospital from closing its emergency medical care at the end of this month. (Snip) Franciscan attorneys had argued Wednesday that there were many obstacles to keeping the downtown facility open since its state license expires at year’s end and it had made no provisions for a staff of doctors, nurses and support staff to continue into 2023.

A US government-funded nonprofit known as “the mountain retreat for the liberal elite” sponsored a “tabletop exercise” intended to influence coverage of a leak of documents related to Hunter Biden, the latest installment of Elon Musk’s “Twitter Files” reveals. In a series of tweets Monday, independent journalist Michael Shellenberger posted confidential documents from the Aspen Institute’s September 2020 event, which he said was attended by Twitter’s then-head of trust and safety, Facebook’s head of security policy and top national security reporters from The New York Times and The Washington Post.(Snip)“The goal was to shape how the media covered it — and how social media carried it,” Shellenberger wrote.

A Chicago-area high school “literacy coach” recently recorded a video of herself in which she admits to indoctrinating the students in her charge. Fox News reports Crete-Monee High’s Heather Marie Godbout (pictured), a member of the school’s Equity Team, also rips “right-wing conspiracy theorist nut jobs” in her video and notes she is opposed to traditional grading policies — because grades get “conflated with other things that aren’t actually learning, like effort or ‘work ethic,’ whatever that means.”(Snip)Godbout says believes conservatives “are legitimately trying to bring down our democracy,” create “a Christian nationalist theocracy” and “literally un-alive people.” Thus, they aren’t worthy of respect.

Chicago - Students and staff at the Francis W. Sorry, hipsters. A recent tweet says it all. “Sam Bankman-Fried: I don’t know where $10 billion went. The Pentagon: We don’t know where $2.2 trillion went. The IRS: You just sent $601.37 don’t forget to report it.” The Biden administration is recruiting 87,000 IRS agents, allegedly to keep an eye on billionaires. But all appearances are that it’s aiming at the little fish of the gig economy instead. Taking payments for a side hustle via PayPal or Venmo? Not only is the IRS reminding you those payments are taxable income, it’s deputizing those payment companies to snitch on you. (Snip) The threshold used to be $20,000 but was lowered to $600

The script is sickeningly familiar by now, isn’t it? Establishment Republicans -- led throughout the ’22 elections and in their aftermath by the notorious Kentucky senator-for-life Mitch McConnell -- betrayed their party’s base, which is staunchly conservative, increasingly in an America First sorta way.  Yes, lest one is confused because of all the serial betrayals, we’re referring to the gross obscenity called the “$1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill.” For true-blue conservatives, the brazen middle-finger thrust rudely into their faces by McConnell and seventeen other Senate go-alongs should be an act of war. Political war, that is.

Donald Trump's tax returns will be made public at midday after a nearly four-year-long fight that saw the former president fight tooth-and-nail to shield his financial statements from public view.  The Democrat-controlled House Ways and Means Committee voted last Tuesday evening to release the returns, in a debate that lasted more than three hours behind closed doors.  The final vote was 24 to 16. All Democrats voted in favor of the action while all Republicans on the panel voted against. Six years' worth of Trump's most recent tax returns will be covered, as well as documents from eight of his businesses. They will be partially-redacted.

For Hollywood, 2022 was truly an annus horribilis. Major studios, streamers, cable providers, and other media giants lost a combined $542 billion in market value in 2022, with left-wing studios the Walt Disney Co., Netflix, and Comcast accounting for the bulk of the bloodshed. The Dow Jones Media Titans index, which tracks the performance of 30 of the world’s biggest media companies, shed 40 percent this year, with its total market value declining from $1.35 trillion to $808 billion, according to a Financial Times report. The losses outpaced indices for other sectors, including banking, which saw a 14.5 percent drop for the year, and telecommunications, which fell by 11.2 percent.
