British firms are in a race against time to exit Taiwan and China before Beijing launches an invasion of the island nation. Brompton Bicycle - which manufactures commuter-friendly foldable pedal bikes out of parts sourced from both Taiwan and China - is among one of the first Western companies to sound the alarm in the face of the impending conflict. (Snip) Taiwan produces a third of the world's microchips that are needed for countless products, including fridges, smartphones, laptops and electric cars. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and United Microelectronics Corporation, both based in the country, and the world's largest chip makers.

Leaving China is something U.S. companies should have started doing years ago. Never entering China would have been even better, but an increase in profits and stock price was too much to resist. Profit over patriotism was more important.

Biden you cheater, looks like it is almost time to wrap things up in Ukraine and shift your bombs and drones over to chicomsville? So will this be another proxy war or going to fight the chicoms directly?

The Chinese can build all the bicycles the entire world needs as well as everything else. I’m surprised Taiwan bicycles can be competitively made anymore. China is not going to invade because Taiwan is not a threat. Even if it were, the Chinese merely need to sanction Taiwan as the West has done with Ukraine and of course there is always a naval blockade of its ports. The US, making China an adversary, is causing investment etc. to be diverted away from Taiwan as this article shows. The very people we are supposed to be defending are going to suffer economically because of our Saber rattling. Tariffs linked to trade deficits over the last few decades would have marginalized China’s near manufacturing strangle hold on the US economy. Unfortunately the world has allowed the US to spend imaginary money so they could benefit so politicians could create the illusion of prosperity with low prices and easy cash. Taiwan is just another casualty of irresponsible, venal American politics.

I'm thinking the Chinese are biding their time. Mid-November 2024 sounds like a good time for an invasion. Either Brandon is out of office or will be relected as a lame duck. What's he gonna do?

I don't think that the ChiComs will invade Taiwan any time soon. And, if I misjudge, which is entirely possible, they will find that invading over miles of open ocean is many, many times more difficult than they imagined. If they do it, it will be a historically stupid move.

If there's so much as a 10% chance of invasion, Taiwan should invest in invasion insurance. This sounds like a job for Hunter and Jim Biden.

The only thing not going viral in China is the truth. Chinese officials are spewing lies to cover up the massive COVID carnage there. Worse, US public-health officials dawdled for a week, allowing air travelers from China in without testing, while other countries immediately blocked infected travelers from entering. Aerial photos and videos from China show body bags stacked outside hospitals and crematoria, funeral-home parking lots full (Snip) More dangerous, China is also withholding laboratory evidence about what strains are sickening its population. Is it the Omicron variants we are accustomed to treating or something new?

Washington - With Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., wielding the gavel as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, President Joe Biden outpaced Donald Trump and Barack Obama in confirming federal judges at the midpoint of their respective terms. The new judges are part of a historic transformation of the federal bench in terms of race, gender, ethnicity and experience, including in federal courtrooms in Chicago. Until Biden, most federal judges were white males, with the door closed to almost all other lawyers.(Snip) Looking ahead, the issue will be filling vacancies from states with GOP senators who may want to block Biden’s lifetime appointments.

Raise a toast to an incredible 19th-century Missouri scientist when you pop that bottle of fine French bubbly on New Year’s Eve. His name is Charles Valentine Riley. He was an entomologist. He studied bugs. And he saved the Champagne industry. (Snip) “Land under vines had shrunk dramatically, the production of fine and ordinary wines had plummeted, the bottom had fallen out of exports, and vignerons had left the countryside in droves.” France’s beloved winemaking tradition was almost lost forever. Riley, Missouri’s first state entomologist, and a passionate scientist-artist raced to the rescue.

The other domestic airlines, by and large, have recovered from the recent winter storm. How much has America changed? Well, consider moves being made at West Point. Over the summer, Washington’s Naming Commission — comprised of four civilians and as many retired military vets — came to final conclusions regarding seven different Department of Defense “assets.” In its report, the group recommended a renaming of sites honoring Confederate General Robert E. Lee, along with Generals P.G.T. Beauregard and William Hardee. And over the holidays, the United States Military Academy at West Point began the process of purging Lee from its hallowed halls. As relayed by the Daily News, Superintendent Lieutenant General Steve Gilland released a December 26th statement:

Axios and Politico Playbook reported: One member motion threshold needed to force a vote ousting a speaker, instead of five. House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy lost a ninth round vote for Speaker, which would mean he's lost three races each of the last three days. No House Speaker vote has gone on this long in modern US political history, and it's set Republicans' new majority in the chamber off to a rocky start.  The last time a House Speaker vote reached 10 rounds was in 1859.  In 1856, it took former House Speaker Nathaniel Prentice Banks two months and 133 rounds of voting for the House of Representatives to settle on a leader - the longest stretch on record.

She has managed to be even less prepared than Jen Psaki, awkwardly dodging questions and constantly having to refer to her notes.
