House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy signaled he was done negotiating with his detractors in an effort to win the speakership during a tense closed-door meeting on Tuesday morning, according to a new report. Several House Republicans doubled down on their promises to oppose McCarthy’s bid after the meeting, which was held ahead of what is expected to be a lengthy vote for the speakership. As many as 20 House Republicans may oppose McCarthy’s bid, according to reports. The California Republican will need 218 votes if every current member votes for a candidate by name — a difficult task with the party’s razor-thin majority in the House.

The estate of Brian Sicknick, a Capitol Police officer who died after responding to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, is suing two rioters involved in the attack and former President Donald Trump for his alleged role in egging it on.
The civil lawsuit, filed Thursday in Washington, DC's federal court, adds to the 2024 presidential candidate's troubles linked to his efforts to impede the peaceful transfer of power after his 2020 electoral loss. Trump is already a defendant in several other civil January 6-related civil lawsuits, where he is arguing his presidency makes him immune from liability.

It’s no secret that a lot of Republicans have been abandoning former president Trump since the disastrous midterm elections. For some reason, Trump seems to keep finding new ways to alienate his supporters and lose unnecessary battles. For a man whose political instincts took him all the way to the White House despite the desperate opposition of the entire political elite, his recent moves have been shocking.
Let’s take a look at some of the self-inflicted wounds from the past few months.

The Biden administration announced new policies at the southern border on Thursday, effective immediately, that will bar more immigrants from Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua from crossing the border to claim asylum while increasing the number of legal pathways for those migrants to apply for asylum from their home countries. The announcement comes as the Biden administration faces record numbers of illegal border crossings, particularly by migrants from those three countries. Previously Haitians, Cubans and Nicaraguans have been able to skirt the Covid-19 border restrictions
I wrote previously about how Rep. Adam Schiff’s office went after journalist Paul Sperry to try to get him suspended from Twitter, using the excuse that he was spreading “QAnon conspiracies.” Sperry denied that he was spreading any such conspiracies. And that still wouldn’t justify the actions of Schiff’s office — you still have a big constitutional problem with a member of Congress trying to suppress speech.
The journalist believes it was because of the story he broke about impeachment “whistleblower” Eric Ciaramella’s connection to Adam Schiff’s staffer, Sean Misko. Sperry said that Schiff’s chief of staff Patrick Boland had even been making threats to his employer, RealClear Investigations
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) gave the 20 conservative holdouts four more concessions before Thursday’s continued speakership vote.
The concessions, negotiated Wednesday night between McCarthy and his critics, are meant to peal several members away from the group of 20 holdouts. McCarthy needs 16 lawmakers to break ranks with the so-called “rebels.” The concessions McCarthy made are significant. Axios and Politico Playbook reported:

Twitter owner and CEO Elon Musk has publicly backed House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy to become Speaker of the House, using social media Thursday morning to offer his support.
Musk’s backing comes as McCarthy begins his third day of trying to garner enough votes to get the job, as Breitbart News reports. Kevin McCarthy should be Speaker,” Musk tweeted in the early hours before another day of politics and diplomacy in Washington, DC. The House adjourned at 8pm on Wednesday night, sparing McCarthy the prospect of a seventh Speaker ballot which he would have likely lost.
“No deal yet,” McCarthy said as the House abruptly adjourned. “But a lot of progress.”
Walter Cunningham, the last surviving astronaut from the first successful crewed space mission in NASA's Apollo program, died Tuesday in Houston. He was 90.
NASA confirmed Cunningham's death on Twitter.
"Today we mourn the passing of Walt Cunningham: U.S. Marine, patriot, and Apollo astronaut. Cunningham spent 11 days in low-Earth orbit during Apollo 7, the first crewed Apollo flight, and was instrumental to our Moon landing's program success," the space agency wrote. The Colorado Republican noted that Trump had been calling McCarthy's opposition and telling them to change their vote.
