MIDDLETOWN, N.J. — Grocery store customers are walking off with those plastic hand baskets you find in the supermarket, an apparent consequence to New Jersey's plastic bag ban that went into effect this past spring. "They are just disappearing," said Louis Scaduto Jr., chief executive officer of Middletown-based Food Circus Super Markets, which owns four Super Foodtown stores in Monmouth County, in the northeastern part of the state. "I may actually have to just do away with them soon, can't afford to keep replacing them," Scaduto wrote in a text message. (Snip) Last May, New Jersey implemented the strictest carryout bag

Those "reusable" bags are breeding grounds for bacteria unless they're used only for canned and boxed goods. They're not washable, and over time, get nasty with bacteria from uncooked meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables. The best bet is to buy washable canvas bags and wash them after each use.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the stores lobbied for the bag ban. It saves them a lot of money not to supply those pesky plastic and paper bags that many of us use for garbage. Now we can buy Hefty bags Joe every day use. It’s stupid!

Not only would I steal one. Wen I got my groceries home I'd chuck it in the (recycle) bin.

In CA they banned those thin flimsy bags that were biodegradable and free only to replace them with thick heavy-duty plastic bags that they charge 10 cents each for. Go figure. Beam me up, mister speaker.

In WA state where I live, I go thru self check out, and when the screen says "how many bags would you like to purchase?", I punch in "0" but use
however many bags I need. Not paying for cheap plastic bags that once were free.

#6; Unfortunately, I was forced to be in Connecticut last June. They charge for bags too. What's a visitor to do, carry items out in their arms? It's a tax.

NJ Grocery Shopper here, reporting from the field.
I am using the plastic stitched tote bags that you'd find available for purchase at the check-out in stores like Marshall's, Home Goods, etc. They are sturdy and can be washed. I'm not happy about this idiocy, but we have no choice.
While shoppers seem to have made this transition much better than I anticipated, there are new problems. Now the scanned items roll down to the packing end of the lane.
Prior to this "improvement", the clerk would often put things into the plastic bags or help at the conclusion of payment. Now it seems they avoid doing packing, probably because they don't want to touch the customers' bags that quite possibly are filthy or carrying unknown nastiness. I actually don't blame them for that, but this has added much time to the process, while the cashier and next person in line stand waiting for me to finish and leave.
How much more stupidity must we endure???

I guess the taxes are so high in Joisey, the ppl can't afford those $1 reusable shopping bags they sell at the checkouts. Where's big Al "Tawanna Brawley" Sharpton screaming about how these $1 bags burden The Community ?

#9, Jersey shopper here too. Allow me to elucidate our options here in the Garden state….
Steal the basket, or if you are urban NJ, steal the cart.
Enter zero when asked how many bags you’ve used.
Walk in to the back, toss a box of whatever on the floor, and use the box. When queried, say you are an illegal immigrant and don’t speak English, while speaking English.
In Shop Rite, I use Stop and Shop bags, in Stop and shop, I use Shop Rite. Or Wegmans. Whatever advertises their competition. And make sure too tell the shoppers how nice the OTHER places are. In a loud Joisey voice.
Or, the one I like best…..leave your stuff on the checkout counter and carry two things out at a time. The wife watches the remainder while I mosey out to the car like 15 times.
MAKE THEM PAY FOR THEIR VIRTUE.

Well done #11
You have done an excellent job of conveying the critical thinking skills of mankind’s ingenuity and resourcefulness!
Now if you could only transfer that wisdom and critical thinking skills to woke politicians that make and establish public policy.

The most irritating thing is to have to purchase a bag to take home ice cream, because the stores do not provide them. If you don't buy a bag, you walk out with a box of ice cream in your hands. and it is over 90 degrees outside.

Here are 2 amusing reasons for paper bags:
In 1997, I was a cashier at an Aldi Food Store in NJ. There, the customers have to bring bags, buy bags or take an empty box. (Their reason is to reduce the overhead for the merchandise.)
1 A (English as a second language) man purchased 20 (maybe 30 or 40) paper bags at 5 cents each. I asked this customer why he needed so many bags. He said that he was moving. He seemed so thrilled with his purchase that I didn't tell him that the empty boxes were free.
2 Several Mormon guys wanted to buy 150 bags. Perhaps for some youth project. I made them count them out and rang up their sale. (They probably could have gotten free bags at a grocery store.)
There are so many uses for paper bags.

My late sister lived on Vermont, another state that banned plastic grocery bags. While she was visiting us here in Florida, we stopped by our local Costco where she purchased a box of "t-shirt" bags, basically the same handle bags as from grocery stores. The box of 1000 bags set her back about $16. She used them both around the house and also when she went grocery shopping. For those in Jersey, they are also available for purchase on Amazon.

How much electric or gas, detergent and water are used to disinfect your bags each time? More than making a plastic bag? Asking for a friend.

It should not be a surprise. NJ outlawed all bags for bagging groceries, forcing customers to buy a politically correct bag or do without.
