The head of McDonald's US operations has publicly slammed a proposed California law that could force large fast food chains to pay workers up to $22 an hour, saying the plan 'should raise alarm bells across the country.' McDonald's USA President Joe Erlinger spoke out in an open letter on Wednesday, arguing that California's plan is unfairly designed and will raise costs further for consumers. He was responding to a bill that could set wages at fast-food chains with more than 100 restaurants at $22 an hour next year, well above the existing statewide minimum of $15.50 an hour for

I live in So Cal, and I went through Mickey D's a while ago and got a fish filet and medium fries. It was $10.34. A big sign on the building said hiring shift workers starting at $15/hour. I am sorry but I can't afford it anymore.

A significant number of those chains with more than 100 stores are single stores owned by a franchisee. How in blazes are they going to be able to absorb the cost? Answer: They can’t which means the prices will have to be increased or the store will go out of business. I can hear the caterwauling already.

FTA: “ new 10-member Fast Food Council with equal numbers of delegates representing workers and employers, along with two state officials, ”. In other words, the employer representatives will always be outvoted 6-4. Thankfully I’ve escaped California.

McDonalds already installed self-serve kiosks when the $15/ hour was announced. What's next, cooks?

These woke CEO's joined with the government to suppress our individual rights. I warned them at the time that I would be silent when the government came for them.

This means they will use almost all their EBT balance on one meal! The food bank and soup lines will be epoch!

Rarely do I set foot or drive through McDonald's, less than once per month, and I'm gonna keep it that way.. Are they selling hamburgers or something else? I am not interested in that something else.

"The bill would create a new 10-member Fast Food Council with equal numbers of delegates representing workers and employers, along with two state officials, empowered to set minimum standards for wages, hours, and working conditions in California."
This would absolve the CA legislature and governor from ever having to deal with minimum wage hikes again. What better than to create a new 'agency' of 6-figure nobody's who can do the dirty work for Sacramento. You know, Congress has been doing this for decades. They create new laws, regulations and agency, give them the power to set fines, rules and future regulations whenever they see fit and it's business and individuals who end up getting screwed every time. When congress members are asked about this they merely state it's a serious problem that needs looking into, but nothing ever changes but more of they same. This particular piece of garbage legislation in Sacramento will be the ultimate downfall of CA. It IS the final nail in the coffin.

I suggest McD's tell all workers they get Federal minimum wage and they'll get TIPS like all other restaurant workers. Newsom just wants more payroll taxes and the way to do that is raising wages. It's just another tax gimmick paid for by everyday people..

My friend who just returned from Japan said he paid $4.88 for Big Mac meal set. That's Big Mac, med. french fries and regular coke. Full-on inflation hasn't hit that country yet, but still recovering from stagflation.

I agree. Newsom is further off the rails than I thought. When fast food prices meet sit-down restaurant prices, it will be all but over for the fast food places.

McDs closed their dining rooms for two years, and eliminated two of the items that were what I ordered.
I'll never be back after fifty years of stopping for food there multiple times a day when traveling.
Done with them, permanently.

The Big Mac Combo will cost $15. Well done Gavin. BTW Gavin, why don't you reduce your pay to $22/hr to make an example. No more French Kitchen for you. Gavin.

“The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” This is a lesson the Left refuse to learn. They continue to punish small business in the long term hope of nationalizing all businesses and putting them under a centralized command and control government. Either that, or they have no idea how businesses work and survive. You cannot force private businesses to waste money, then expect them to prosper. Or maybe they don’t want businesses to prosper. The Democrat Party is the place where liberty, freedom, and self-sufficiency go to die.

Why does a McDonald's hamburger cost 15 cents anymore? Minimum wage increases and inflation.
So who has gained anything?

At $22/hr in Kalifornia, either McD's will use robots or they will leave. Who the hell does Newsome think he is to tell a private company what they can pay?

Woke McDonalds can't take it when the wokeness costs them mo' money. This guy should have resisted the $15 an hour wage more vigorously. Paying that kind of money for flipping burgers and making mistakes in change at the cash register is stupid. Bigger money for smaller burgers is not a survivable business model. Burger King and Wendy's are learning the same lesson the hard way. The advertised "$6 your-way" sale is $7 your-way in my area and the store is usually empty.

My wife tells me that in a McDs today you must use their computer screens. Another reason to not ever go in again. I won't use those inefficient pain's in the butt. No more McDs for me, ever.
