U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) vessel the Oliver Henry was greeted with silence when it requested permission for a scheduled port call in the Solomon Islands, forcing the crew to Papua New Guinea instead. The incident comes amid mounting concerns about the influence of the Chinese Communist Party in the region and the ongoing weakening of democratic institutions in the Solomon Islands with the Pacific nation’s leader relying heavily on Chinese support to weather domestic turmoil. The USCG cutter Oliver Henry was participating in Operation Island Chief, along with Australian, New Zealand, and UK vessels, to monitor and prevent illegal fishing activities in the South Pacific. The operation ended on Aug. 26.

Why is the Coast Guard not guarding the coast? Why are they all the way at the other side of the world? They belong no place but us coastal waters. Forget those islands. The USCG has no business there.

I agree #6 but article states they were included in an exercise regarding coastal fishing. NOT our coasts or our fishing. I don't know the answer to this: have there been any hurricanes or typhoons in those islands where the U.S. came to their aid. America helps so very many nations in need.

USCG patrolling assets in that part of the Pacific (or near the Spratley Islands in international waters) is a less intimidating presence than a battleship gray US Navy. It's a matter of playing a subtle political game w/o the risk of escalating our presence into a full military confrontation. We've had USCG door-to-door ground patrols in Afghanistan, learning stop-and-search techniques they'll apply later on for boarding vessels at sea.

That "coastal fishing/poaching" exercise? was to catch Chinese vessels violating other countries fishing ground rules/laws. For china it constitutes an aircraft carrier that cannot be sunk, does not need refueling, can be surrounded by more air defenses in depth than any fleet...and with missiles they can hit Australia, US territories. Bailing out their failing economy, and propping up their embattled president is much less expensive than even one carrier group.

In August of 1942 Japan moved to build an airstrip in the Solomons and we moved to oppose them with force. This kicked off the many months long Guadalcanal campaign, one of the bloodiest and most consequential large scale battles in the war. And now China just repeats history and we will do NOTHING with Traitor Joe, the ChiCom employee calling the shots.....or lack of shots.

The tensions between Barack Obama and Joe Biden are laid bare for the first time in a new biography detailing the often fraught relationship between the pair. The Long Alliance: The Imperfect Union of Joe Biden and Barack Obama reveals that the former and current President did not have a cozy 'bromance' during their nearly 20-year conncection, as many believe. Biden, who served as Obama's vice president during both his terms as president, was accused of 'betrayal' for announcing that they both supported gay marriage before his boss did.In their early days Obama thought that Biden was 'condescending'
