A month ago, Axios reported, "Trust in news collapses to historic low."
Trust in newspapers was at 16%. Trust in TV news was at 11%. Both mediums lost trust by having too much opinion and not enough facts. People do not trust the facts given by opinionators, especially opinionators with whom they disagree.
That loss of trust leads to drops in circulation and viewership. (snip)As the drill sergeant said in basic training, opinions are like a certain orifice. Everyone has one. Most of them stink.
The quickest way to salvation -- to convincing people that you are a trustworthy source of news -- is to get rid of the opinions.

NPR is upset. After decades of supporting the invasion of illegal aliens -- after declaring a border wall to be racist -- NPR affiliates in DC and NYC are seeing illegal aliens up close and personal. Governors in border states are busing illegal aliens to those liberal bastions.
Shocking.
NPR whined, "GOP governors sent buses of migrants to D.C. and NYC — with no plan for what's next."
(snip)
"According to Abbott's office, more than 6,100 migrants have been bused to D.C. from Texas alone. They arrive six days a week, as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 11 p.m. — sometimes multiple buses each day."
Oh no!

President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats are trying to reinstate the federal assault weapon ban that was in effect for 10 years because—they claim—it reduced gun crime. The bill, which just passed the House, will soon get a vote in the Senate.
In the effort to get it passed, Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) made some grand claims, which they called “facts,” about the previous ban on rifles leading to decreasing crime. But those facts don’t appear to be backed up by evidence.(snip)rifle homicides dropped to 3.6 percent after the ban expired in 2004.

McDonalds has announced they are dropping their program testing plant-based meats because people didn’t like it.
As noted by the Washington Times, “other trials at Panda Express and Yum! Brands (KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut) have also ended without a subsequent product launch. Beyond Meat products at Dunkin’, Hardee’s, and A&W have been discontinued after launching.”
Apparently, American consumers do not want to eat fake meat; at least not fake meat made from plants.

For weeks, critics of the J6 Committee have noted that the committee members promised to present compelling evidence to support criminal charges, but it has not yet presented that case after nine hearings.(snip) Cheney and the Committee Chair have repeatedly stressed that voters cannot allow Trump to return to power and made repeated references to the upcoming election. The lack of any balance in the scope of examinations or presentation of evidence only magnifies the appearance of an investigation tailored to political rather than investigative priorities.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said it will conduct “flyovers” of the Permian Basin region in Texas and New Mexico to “survey oil and gas operations to identify large emitters of methane” amid the Biden administration’s climate policy initiative.
“The flyovers are vital to identifying which facilities are responsible for the bulk of these emissions and therefore where reductions are most urgently needed,” said Earthea Nance, an EPA official, in an Aug. 1 news release. The flyovers, which will use infrared cameras, will be conducted until Aug. 15, .(snip)The Permian Basin accounts for 43 percent of the nation’s oil supply, meaning any federal regulation or rules may impact gas

A top U.S. biosecurity lab is assuming responsibility for signing “poorly drafted” agreements with three high-level biosecurity labs in China that they concede may have broken the law.
The three contracts, including one with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), gave the Chinese labs powers to destroy “secret files” from any stage of their collaboration.
“The party is entitled to ask the other to destroy and/or return the secret files, materials, and equipment without any backups,” stated the 2017 memorandum of understanding (MOU) that the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) signed with the Wuhan lab, which first came to light in April.

The Pentagon has issued a memo asking personnel not to delete data on their phones, calling it a “solemn responsibility and legal obligation” of all federal employees, both military and civilian.
In accordance with the Department of Defense (DoD) Instructions 5015.02 and 8170.01, personnel must retain text messages that are qualified as records as per the Federal Records Act, the Aug. 3 memo issued by Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks said. All mobile device service providers in the DoD are now required to capture and save data on “DoD-provisioned mobile devices” once users turn them on. This order is “effective immediately.”

Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema has announced her support for the senate climate change spending and tax proposal after some modifications to the new taxation.
To support the hedge fund donors, Senator Sinema insisted the carried interest loophole tax provision be removed and instead replaced with a corporate tax on stock buybacks. Any time a corporation wants to buy back their own shares of stock, they will now pay the U.S. government a tax for doing so; at least that’s the ¹intent.

Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended State Attorney Andrew Warren of the 13th Judicial Circuit due to “neglect of duty.”
In the order (pdf) outlining the move, DeSantis cites Warren recently declaring he would not enforce laws that largely prohibit late-term abortions.
Warren and other prosecutors signed a document in June that said “enforcing abortion bans runs counter to the obligations and interests we are sworn to uphold.”
“We decline to use our offices’ resources to criminalize reproductive health decisions and commit to exercise our well-settled discretion and refrain from prosecuting those who … provide, or support abortions,”

The World Health Organization declaration of Monkeypox as a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” (PHEIC), was made by one man, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who has no medical training, over the objection of the majority of his own expert committee of medical and scientific advisors. Nine of the committee members thought a PHEIC should not be declared and six supported a declaration.
“Nine and six is very, very close.(snip) I decided to act as a tie-breaker,” Tedros said(snip)
Perhaps it is the “new math” that leads to the conclusion of a “tie” with a 3-vote majority on one side? And why did Tedros decide to go with the minority

After a tight race, incumbent Representative Peter Meijer lost to Trump loyalist John Gibbs in Michigan’s GOP primary contest for the state’s third congressional district on Tuesday.Gibbs garnered 53 percent of the vote to Meijer’s 47 percent as of around midnight on Wednesday, ABC News reported.
The race tested the power of former president Trump’s endorsement, which Gibbs secured after embracing the MAGA platform and backing the theories that the 2020 election was “stolen.”
“John Gibbs is a fabulous talent who loves the State, our Military, and our Vets. He will always protect our Second Amendment, our Southern Border, and the Police—there will be no defunding with John!,” Trump said of Gibbs.
