A staggering 71 million more people around the world are experiencing poverty as a result of soaring food and energy prices that climbed in the weeks following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations Development Program said in a report Thursday.
The UNDP estimates that 51.6 million more people fell into poverty in the first three months after the war, living off $1.90 a day or less. This pushed the total number globally at this threshold to 9% of the world's population. An additional 20 million people slipped to the poverty line of $3.20 a day.

A new report from the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University shows that law enforcement responding to the Uvalde school shooting on May 24 had three missed chances to slow the gunman before the fatal shooting that resulted in the deaths of 19 students and two adults. According to the report, a Uvalde officer armed with a rifle sighted in to shoot the 18-year-old gunman before he entered the school but instead waited for permission from a supervisor.

A tractor-trailer found near Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio contained the bodies of 50 dead people, along with 16 others who have been taken to hospitals, according to local officials in San Antonio and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“This is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said at a news conference near the scene.
Local officials said federal authorities were now investigating the case and that three people were in custody, but it was unclear if they were connected to the incident.

The Savannah Bananas are pioneering a new, more entertaining form of baseball akin to basketball’s Harlem Globetrotters.
Sold-out games at the 4,000-capacity Savannah Bananas Grayson Stadium in Savannah, Georgia, feature dancing baseball players, coaches, and umpires — 120 different performers in all, including a male cheerleading squad.
And 38-year-old owner Jesse Cole, dressed in his signature yellow suit, is the P.T. Barnum of the new kind of baseball circus.

On May 9, 2022, a column of tanks and artillery thundered down Moscow’s Red Square. Over 10,000 soldiers marched through the city’s streets. It was Russia’s 27th annual Victory Day parade, in which the country commemorates the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II. Russian President Vladimir Putin, presiding over the ceremonies, gave a speech praising his country’s military and fortitude.

At last we have something that really brings the American people together: inflation. Everyone hates it. It’s the whole topic of conversation at stores, on streets, at the park, or any setting. Want to make a friend? Just walk up to anyone and start complaining about prices. They will join right in and off you go. New besties.

Four weeks ago, Germany agreed to send dozens of anti-aircraft tanks to help defend Ukraine from Russia's invasion, part of what it called a turning-point after decades of military restraint. Berlin says it can deliver the first Gepard tanks in July.
That's too slow, a Ukrainian parliamentarian said on Tuesday, as Russian forces launched an assault on the country's east.
"For us, July is like, 'what?'" Anastasia Radina, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, told Reuters at the World Economic Forum.

Millions of Americans rely on the federal government to cover the cost of college. Education loans have existed for generations, but borrowing only really took off in the past two decades.
Soaring college costs, higher enrollment, changes to the federal lending system, labor market demand for credentials and paltry wage growth have all contributed to the $1.6 trillion in outstanding federal student debt. This does not include debt originated in the private market.

Migrant encounters at the southern border hit a record high in April, according to new filings from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Fox News’ Bill Melugin reported.
The record-setting month comes as President Joe Biden looks to end Title 42, a Trump-era policy allowing Border Patrol to turn away migrants at the border due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“BREAKING: There were 234,088 migrants encountered at the Southern border in April, per a DHS court filing today. That’s the highest number in DHS history,”

Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard said that high readings on inflation still concern central bank officials, reinforcing the need for higher interest rates.
“Inflation is broader and more persistent than many have thought and the Fed will have to act in order to keep inflation under control and we’ve got a plan in place,” Bullard told Yahoo Finance in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday morning that prices in the United States rose by 8.3% between April of this year and April of last year.

The premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Paramount Plus Thursday, appeared to allege that the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol triggered the fictitious nuclear World War III on Earth in the sci-fi series timeline. The spin off from Star Trek: Discovery, based in cannon from the 1960's original series, showed the crew of the Enterprise discovering a pre-warp society with advanced technology, which warring factions on the planet are about to use against each other.

Forty years ago we had a soaring inflation rate, obscene gas prices and interest rates in the teens.
Today, thanks to their incredible incompetence, bad policies and serial stupidity, the Democrats in Washington are bringing back all those problems.
It’s getting so bad, I’m actually beginning to think Jimmy Carter was not such a bad president after all.
People under 40 have no idea how bad things were in the late 1970s under Carter.
They’ve grown up knowing only 3 percent interest rates, dirt cheap gasoline and 2 percent inflation.
They don’t know how miserable things were under Carter or how miserable they can get again under Biden.

Actual poverty is terrible...but here's the kicker: UN Development Program Administrator Achim Steiner claimed there is a need for the global economy to step up, adding that there is enough wealth in the world to manage the crisis, “but our ability to act in unison and rapidly is a constraint." Sounds "humanitarian", but think about that...
