The company at the center of a baby formula crisis could face criminal charges, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday, as Democrats considered new government controls over the baby formula industry. “I think there might be a need for indictment,” said Mrs. Pelosi, who has realigned the House agenda to address a baby formula shortage. Democrats are also considering legislation that would give the federal government more control over the supply and distribution of formula, particularly when shortages arise. The plan would require formula companies to report inventory to the Food and Drug Administration, which could then move supplies from one state to another to fill empty shelves.

I'd say that's a pretty serious accusation, coming from the Speaker of the US House of Representatives. Sure, she's a moron and unapologetically crooked as the day is long, but she's in a position of real power in this diminished nation of ours.

FDA/CDC tested ALL of their product, their labs, their sites...NO MATCH to the kids who got sick, found NO contaminated product, even the bacterial strain infecting the four kids didn't match each other. Refused to sign off on a total plant cleansing and restart, even with heightened policies, programs, inspections. But....they wanted more, they wanted "control", they wanted a sword over Abbots head, they wanted to "Dictate". It bit them..now they want to double down. Hinting at "Nationalizing" the industry. While waiving import rules against Foreign Companies that never had as High of standards to begin with.

Ok yes, more government investigations into the innocent. More government control is called for! yes of course it is. Manufacture a crisis, claim non-involvement, point the finger of guilt and blame at the victims, and claim to have a solution. Typical democrat playbook. An evil government burns the country down so it can govern the ashes.

Why not go after the secret tipster who started it all? After all, the FDA found nothing but Piglousi still puts the blame on Abbott. This pig needs to be culled from Congress.

I believe it was the over reacting FDA (Nasty Pelousy's watchdog government) that shut Abbot down for safety reasons instead of just enhanced monitoring until it was understood what was truly happening. As pointed out, 1) No contamination of product was found at the plant even though some bacteria was found in non production areas. 2) The bacteria that was found was not the same strain as that in the infants. 3) The strains found in the infants were NOT the same as each other, i.e. their was NOT a common source (i.e. Abbot).
In addition, there are now sick children because of the forced changes of the formula they were using due to the shortages forced by the FDA. As often is the case, the government reacts without careful consideration of the side effects of their actions.
The reality is, there is no such thing as a perfect manufacturing process. There is an expectation of "reasonable care" in the production process. It is however, a human designed process and humans make mistakes. Also, heightened monitoring costs need to be built into the product price. The attempt to raise product quality from 99.90% to 99.99% "safe" may raise prices to the point that it is unaffordable by many. A reasonable balance is always stuck between safety, cost, and what is actually achievable. Pelousy is pandering for votes.

If all the women who are able to breast feed their babies do so, there should be enough formula for those UNABLE to do so and those with multiple births. Those able to do so but do not want to, especially because of their views on "out of date animal practices', or the even more widespread "YUCK" factor are making their own beds and are solely responsible for the situation they find themselves and have deliberately put their babies in. The human race survived very well before "Baby Formula' was invented within the last century or so, and marketed as a much more "civilized, liberating and progressive" practice than breast feeding.

If Abbott has a single corporate brain cell, they should announce that they are staying out of the formula business and that their facility is now for sale. Nancy certifies a THREAT to their existence from the federal government. That is unacceptable, and why in the world would anyone put up with that?
Nancy, you demon, there are consequences even for you. If that hag can't kill babies in the womb, she'll do her best to kill them in their first year.

Pelosi is sounding more and more like Biden. She’s always been an extremely nasty witch but now she’s gotten incoherent and bizarre. Think about it. Three Democrats in line for the Presidency. The probably demented, the complete idiot, and the installed President who is both. And this is the best they’ve got.

Hey Mum-Ra Nancy you ancient spirit of evil go back to your Black Pyramid. It's you and the other numbskulls in the federal government that are continuing to wreck every faucet of our society. You want an entity to face federal charges witch how about the idiots at the FDA. That far reaching agency (which one isn't) shut down Abbott for safety concerns and they dealt with the issue. After which they were ready to resume making much needed baby formula but for some reason the FDA morons delayed them. I know that you're a completely corrupt, evil. stupid and a possible drunk dementia patient but even you have to know how bad this looks for your party.

A big government FDA investigation targeting Abbott that started in about February causing the big Abbott baby formula plant that supplied the nation with 48% of all baby formula to be shut down. That plant remains shut down. Common sense will tell you that once such a plant is shut down that is bound to cause a shortage of the products that the plant produces. Since then the FDA has said that their investigation did not find any of the production contamination upon which their investigation was predicated and that they were looking for at the plant. But only after this matter was publicized and became a major political problem for Biden and the Democrats was the plant given the OK to reopen in about two weeks and ramp up production of baby formula, meaning that the nationwide baby formula shortage will continue for months.
Now comes Pelosi to deflect from Biden’s and the Democrats big government incompetence forecasting criminal indictments against Abbott and their executives and to create more big government rules and regulations to further complicate the baby formula production business in the USA. In other words Pelosi is trying to put President Reagan’s old adage in play by pronouncing “Hi, I’m from the Government and I am here to help” so what could go wrong? Well Abbott could elect to get out of the baby formula business, shut down the plant permanently or sell that business, to say a company from China or some other foreign entity. What could go wrong with that? Who knows, but maybe making it somewhat easier for the corrupt DC political UniParty to belly up to the bar, to seek and obtain “rake offs” to allow such a business to operate without future government interference.

Re #16, yes, excellent point. And the way that the normal free market forces will push for that sane, sensible solution is by letting the shortage drive up the price of formula. If formula is more expensive, fewer people wil choose to use it if they can breast feed, leaving more for those who have no choice in the matter.
This is how the normal market pricing fluctuations lets the market allocate scarce resources most effectively. Any efforts to prevent normal market pricing increases and decreases will short circuit the free market and lead to shortages and excesses of various commodities, wasting scarce resources. In this case, infant formula.

Like today's high gas prices, the baby formula shortage is caused by the US government (Biden) policies and bureaucracy. The FDA has been foot dragging on reopening the Abbott plant. If Pelosi wants to send anyone to jail over the shortage, it should be a few government officials who refused to do their jobs in a timely manner leading to the shortage. Of course, that will never happen as we all know that nothing is ever the government's fault or caused by government bureaucracy. The blame always falls on those who were effected by the government or the bureaucracy.

Right. The solution to a supply problem caused by Federal regulators is to punish the producer, then install more regulations. What an idiotic (but not unexpected) response.

Criminal charges against the company because the FDA arbitrarily and capriciously shut down their factory for several months? Why not. Serves them right for not manufacturing overseas where there's no oversight whatsoever, as so many other companies have done to avoid exactly this type of FDA harassment.
