Steve Schmidt Apologizes to the New York
Times, Says Former Boss John McCain Lied

Steve Schmidt, a former senior strategist on then-Senator John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, published a scathing expose and mea culpa late Sunday night and apologized publicly to the New York Times for denying reporting he now claims was accurate regarding McCain. “I would like to apologize to the journalists whose bylines appear on the story,” Schmidt wrote on his newly launched Substack. “Their credibility, integrity, and professionalism were unfairly attacked by the McCain campaign of which I was a part of. I got it wrong. These journalists, like many others, were also victims of this lie.” The story in question

Comments:

It's a little late to set the record straight. Just another reminder that 2008 was a disaster no matter who won.

I read it but i have little interest in reading it carefully enough to understand what the fruit he was saying- specifically. When I came to the part about him spending hours on the phone EVERY NIGHT with the raging sobbing lobbyist, I couldn’t help think of the Depp trial. There is something of smelly cheese with this guy. I am NOT a fan of the mccain family- they are despicable. I do wonder who would have been the candidate if the despicable mccain had not been. And if he would have still been in a position to play his role with the Steele Dossier. Now, i extract myself from this spoiled fondue.

Who was the lobbyist? Who did she work for? Was she able to convince McCain to change positions on issues she was for? (McCain was a cad, had a history of affairs with married woimen, married at least one of them.)

All through the story "a lobbyist".....I didn't see her name anywhere. I soured on McCain many years before he was ever even imagined as a presidential candidate. I am convinced to this day that the whole Keating affair was just as much on McCain as any of the others. His grandfather was a great USN admiral, did a lot of good for the country in the south Pacific in WW2. I know less about the father, but he at least covered up for his spoiled rotten brat of a USN officer son. Two sides of the story as to his time as a POW, some say a hero, some say the opposite. I don't have an opinion on that one. In the Forrestal fire, I don't THINK he was actually responsible for the fire, but that isn't entirely clear, but he left the burning flight deck, did nothing to assist fighting the fires and as soon as it was over, went AWOL and just disappeared for a week or two. THAT always seemed like the actions of a guilty person. His admiral father covered up for him. Absolutely no fan of the man. One more crooked move by a person whose whole life was a series of crooked moves.

Am I to assume a campaign guy found a conscience? How reliable can he end up being for anyone in politics if he's willing to spill, even if he didn't mention the name of the lobbyist who McCain was having an affair with for many years. I presume it's well-known in DC circles and will come out soon.

These denials were blatant lies by John and by his campaign." "On February 21, 2008, in the midst of John McCain's campaign in the 2008 Republican Party presidential primaries, both The New York Times and the Washington Post published articles detailing rumors of an improper relationship between John McCain and lobbyist Vicki Iseman." see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McCain_lobbyist_controversy

McCain was a petty, nasty little man and Trump was right about him. Heroes do not let themselves get shot down and captured like McCain did. I am convinced as senator he helped Obama undermine our nation, and Obama probably took a great deal of glee about it too.

Regarding the Forrestal fire, McCain absolutely contributed to that disaster by showing off something called a ''wet start'' while he was in his fighter jet. His arrogance killed and maimed a lot of good men that day, and to his shame he was taken off the Forrestal before the injured men were. His daddy knew there would be revenge from the rest of the sailors because of what he did.

Whoever John McCain was while he was in the Hanoi Hilton, he left that man behind there. John McCain the public grifter is who figures prominently throughout the rest of his life. Many people forget his role in the Savings and Loan scandals of the late 1980s. Two “heroes” had their entire bodies submerged in the filth of that $500 billion taxpayer bailout. Known as the Keating Five, they helped to single handedly destroy the S&L industry. Here is a link to and article from November 1989 about McCain’s role in that criminal conspiracy. phoenixnewtimes.com/news/McCain-the-most-reprehensible-of-the-keating-five-6431838 He was a disgrace and deserves to be remembered that way.

John McCain was a backstabbing, corrupt, angry, evil bitter little man who hated his fellow veterans and active duty military. So much so he lied about and more importantly every piece of legislation that would've help us such as pay raises, better VA healthcare etc. he was against. He and his pal and fellow Navy vet turncoat John Kerry lied about POW's during the Senate Select committee hearing in the early 90s. His run in 2008 for POTUS was a disaster with him blaming others like Sarah Palin for his defeat. This is his legacy despite what his fat harpy daughter said during his funeral.
