America's largest baby formula manufacturer warned it could take more than two months to get their products back on retail shelves once the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gives the go to reopen its Michigan plant. Abbott Laboratories, which shut down its major plant in Sturgis, Michigan in February, announced Wednesday that with FDA approval the site could be restarted in two weeks. However, the manufacturer claims it will take another eight weeks before the stock of baby formula is replenished, which is far from optimistic for parents scrambling to find baby formula amid supply disruptions and Abbott's massive safety recall.

Cook carrots, squash, or potatoes until soft, mash them, cool them, and you have baby food.

Regular milk works fine. Both my boys were on it at three months. Get the formula mother's used for decades before canned formula. My mother used it for my brother in the late '50's. Young women today have been so sheltered. Wonder if they understand thousands of years of babies survived without formula.

When my daughter was about four months old and switching from breast milk to formula, she balked at Similac and other formulas. My wife was visiting relatives in another state, so she tried feeding her plain old milk. My daughter loved it. She didn’t even want it heated - she’d take it in a bottle right out of the refrigerator! My wife took her to the pediatrician; he said feeding her cow’s milk was fine, and suggested putting a few drops of liquid multivitamin in the first bottle of the morning. This went on until she was eating solid food and drinking from a cup. She’s almost 34 years old now and perfectly healthy.
What’s the big deal here? Did all these women forget how to breast feed?

if the source of the infections was not from the Sturgis plant why was it shut down?
I understand improving training and cleanliness but production could continue as those issues were resolved.

I remember making “baby formula” with evaporated milk…I do not recall ever using anything in cans. Two healthy babies. One who engaged in projectile vomiting (while smiling broadly) was tried on goat milk formula for a while, which simply worsened the odor. The pediatrician wasn’t panicked, sayiing that he was retaining enough to keep him nourished.
Reading the strong warnings against what we used routinely in the 50s makes me glad my children were born then. The current stuff sounds too Fauci-esque as it shamelessly advocates for commercial formula made by the likes of Pharma’s Abbott. Abbott’s plant was closed because of usanitary conditions and contaminated formula. That is the main reason for the shortage.
What rubbish. Even this article describes what so many of us so safely used as just an “emergency” solution, not to be substituted longterm for commercial products. Repeat: What rubbish.

#8, PS. My son stopped vomiting and then did fine on evaporated milk formula.
Today’s mothers appear to be being scared silly by some of the propaganda that is being put out. There is not a darned thing wrong with evap milk formula - the canned milk mixed with water and a little Karo corn syrup. I gave my babies liquid vitamins on their tongues; some now put them in the first bottle.
Except for a loss of profit to companies like Abbott, I’d say the old way was just fine. My sterilizing of bottles, nipples, etc. was important. Baby formula should be prepared and kept very clean. Abbott appears to have flunked that.

Mentioned this to the Lady Chihuahua, and she told me how baby formula was made with evaporated milk, karo syrup, and water (?). Her sister made it for her children. Today, 'experts' warn parents against making it.
So, this plant basically flunked an inspection and gets shutdown. We are seeing Washington at its best. They caused the problem, and then 'rush in' to fix it.
There was a recall. Did anyone actually get sick?

The FDA shut down the largest manufacturer, even though the problem they found (1) was away from the food processing line and (2) the bacterial sample did not match the sick kids. I am guessing that the bureaucrats who shut down the production has no understanding of the supply chain and did no projections of inventory and supplies. Wesley Mouch is handling the problem.

In the old days Moms would just make their own formula out of evaporated milk, water, and Karo syrup. Their doctors gave them the recipe. Millions of kids were fed this and grew up to be perfectly healthy kids.
Now, it's "OMG that's soooo dangerous!" These lazy Karens are hysterical.

Where are the environmentalist wackos chiming in about the disposable diaper accumulation in landfills???
While some may be sensitive to cow's milk, PET canned condensed milk with a little water and Kayro syrup should work well, and then there is the leche that comes from the mother to solve the problem.....

The FDA couldn't just have worked with them to get it straight while the operation continued? These people are totalitarians and their tactics caused this shut down because of abuse of power and the growing trend to weaponize all federal agencies for political power. I'm surprised they haven't nationalized it.

Needless panic, people. We all grew up on homemade formula prior to mid-60’s. I don’t recall the proportions but it was Karo Syrup (the light kind, not dark), cannned carnation evaporated milk or “pet milk”( had a cow on the front) and water. I believe it was cooked on the stove then put in glass baby bottles, cooled and refrigerated. I remember my mother making it and my grandmother making it. We’re all in our 60’s now and doing fine, thank you very much!

My mother breast fed all of us. I do remember a formula substitute in Dr. Spock's book: Evaporated milk, water, karo syrup and vitamin drops.
This doesn't work for those children with food allergies, but for the majority it does. And homemade baby food isn't hard to make at all.

It's not a crisis, it's a Biden-caused inconvenience. Illegal aliens flooding the the country and exposing us to more drugs and terrorism, that's a crisis. Energy restrictions that expose us to blackmail, that's a crisis. Badgering a sick Russian who has the ability to launch nukes at us, that's a crisis. Shut up about the baby formula already.

Everything I read about anything but "big corporation formula", is saying that cows milk is "dangerous". I am suspecting big corp has brainwashed lots of people.
Don't forget the big 1980's scandal about Nestle formula pushed onto South Americans.
Most of us baby boomers were only given cows milk from day one. Breast feeding was out of fashion during the 50's and 60's. Cow's milk and the baby bottles were heated to a sterilized temperature. The bottles were loaded with the sterilized milk and stored in the fridge. Later it was warmed to wrist temperature. As a big brother I did the whole procedure by myself numerous times. By the time my sister was 1-1/2 years old I began sneaking her regular cold milk with Nestle's Quick in it. She became a big fan.

Maybe the mothers who voted against the bad Orange Man will wake up and realize that the Parkinson's patient in the White House actually hates them --- that is when he can focus in those rare bouts of drug-induced sanity he gets.
Seeing that the very first dedicated "baby formula" wasn't patented until 1865 and the first glass baby bottle with a nipple on it for just warm milk didn't come until 1835, exactly what the heck did mothers do for the first 6,000 years of recorded history to feed their new born children? Aside from wet nurses they used warmed goat or cow milk or Mom chewed up the food first and gave it to their kid like a baby bird gets.

I don't want to be the skunk at the picnic, but there are many babies that have allergies that have to have a special formula, plus many babies are allergic to milk or milk products. This shut down to processing baby formula looks unnecessary, if the violations were not near the food area.
Leave it to the FDA to screw up another part of our Country. Why aren't they going after the Fentanyl coming in killing 107,000 Americans or going after the Meth labs all over the Country?

The FDA auditors, like those from OSHA and other agencies, care only about their precious procedures, not reality. They found no evidence that deviations from procedures (such as employee hand washing) actually caused contamination at the plant, much less in the product. These desk jockeys are worse than worthless. I despise them.

that stuff is fine for older babies, but newborns up to around 5-6 months old don't have a digestive system that can handle that food. They need either formula or to be breastfed. This is a disaster for Biden, seeing as how he is sending pallets of formula to all the illegals at the Southern border, while American babies starve.
