New York Times reporter and creator of the 1619 Project Nikole Hannah-Jones stirred up controversy on Twitter Monday when she claimed in a since-deleted tweet that 'tipping is a legacy of slavery,' sparking an argument with an historian she claims is 'obsessed' with her. 'Tipping is a legacy of slavery and if it's not optional then it shouldn't be a tip but simply included in the bill,' Nikole Hannah-Jones tweeted Monday. 'Have you ever stopped to think why we tip, like why tipping is a practice in the U.S. and almost nowhere else?' Hannah-Jones, 45, who spearheaded a New York Times Magazine issue titled 'The 1619 Project'

Comments:

She's trying to explain away the stereotype that bLACK people don't tip in restaurants, and sometimes even steal tips from other tables.

I'm happy to have been a white slave while working my way through college. So I'm now a "big" tipper, even for a bad meal and server. At least they aren't sitting home waiting for a check from Joe.

I got news for this 'Einstein'. Even if tipping IS something only found in the U.S., the U.S. is NOT the only country that has slavery in its past. Maybe tipping is a thing here because Americans are more generous and like to spread what they have been blessed with around a little bit.

Yep. Happened to me thirty years ago when I was a waitress in a famous, upscale restaurant in New Orleans. A black City Council member and his two guests. They badgered me throughout the meal (I served many tables with many people sitting at them nearby) and interrupted my service repeatedly: "I need more gravy!" "Do you call these Red Beans?" etc. Well, they skipped and I will never forget them leaving the lobby, looking back, waving at me and laughing heartily.

It isn't a stereotype. We used to have a BW3 a couple miles away in a largely black populated part of the city. I went there a few years ago and it was like a "self-serve" BW3. There weren't any waiters or waitresses. So I sat at the bar. The bartender, a woman, told me the waiting staff had all quit because the average tip was like 4%. I told her I could read between the lines about the type of people she was talking about. A few weeks later, it closed. As did the Applebees a cuuple miles down the road.

These black people are fools. Do they understand the history of anything other than watching the made up TV mini-series, "Roots"? At one time in Europe the percentage of "Serfs" were around 75%. Now, a Serf was the lowest of the low, even below a Peasant on the social scale, and while technically a Serf could not be "sold" like a slave, they were for ALL intents and purposes SLAVES. The owned nothing, they could not venture off their masters estate, and they had to ask permission to do anything, including marriage. The point being this, it is more than likely that EVERY white person of European ancestry was at one time or another, a SERF, hence a SLAVE. So, we can all say to Nikole Hannah-Barbara, "Light-skinned head of mush, we've ALL been slaves, it's just that most of us have gotten over it and moved on with our lives."

When my parents emigrated to the US in the 1950's my Dad took jobs waiting in restaurants in NYC, as they were among the best paying jobs for immigrants. Those tips put me and my brother thru college. Tipping your servers, your drivers, mailmen, garbagemen, etc., are acknowledgements of good service and empathy for someone who works a hard job. Narcissists cannot grasp this concept due to their selfish & self-centered childish natures where they think they are OWED service, and not that THEY OWE to share their good fortune with someone beneath them.

I believe it is common knowledge in the service industry that one race in particular are terrible tippers if they tip at all. Having been seated by a table of these individuals on many occasions, I can attest that they are demanding and ungrateful. Like most Americans who dine out, I am very appreciative of good service and tip accordingly. I will never fail to leave a tip regardless of the service unless it is absolutely abhorrent and those times have been few and far between. I bet any server seeing this woke joker coming to their table will let out a groan because she is no doubt demanding and ungrateful. Why are people so bitter and rude? They give out a vibe that precedes them like the cloud that envelopes PigPen warning anyone that they are trouble. Who wants to be like that? Show a little kindness and you will likely be shown kindness in return. Ms. Hannah-Jones just gave permission for the black community to stop tipping and they will if they tipped at all previously. Now, they have the perfect excuse, slavery.

I do NOT understand why she took the tweet down. It's ridiculous, but SHE is ridiculous. She didn't conjure this "legacy of slavery" from whole cloth. Here's a piece by a typical, liberal white female at CBS from 2020 to explain, far LESS honestly than the ridikulous Nikole: The disturbing history of tipping in the U.S.: "It's literally a slave wage" https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tipping-jobs-history-slave-wage-cbsn-originals-documentary/ It was never "literally" a slave wage, by the way, but I wouldn't expect anyone at CBS to know that. When minimum wages were proposed some employers fought to let tipping be their total wage, conspicuously among them the railroads. In my personal experience people who criticize tipping are lousy tippers.

Considering that when the practice first started being imported from Europe in the late 1800s, it was opposed on the basis of encouraging a servile attitude for a fee the connection to slavery appears unlikely.

Back in my college days I waitressed at a very trendy restaurant in Center City Philadelphia. I cannot count the number of times that a large party of blacks were seated in my section, ran me ragged with their demands (Get us another pitcher of strawberry margaritas!), ran up a huge bill and then stiffed me. Consequently, I always tip at least 20% unless the service is particularly bad, in which case I might drop it down to 15%.. The last time I stiffed a server was in 2012 at a restaurant near the Grand Canyon. My daughter asked him which salad dressings were available because they were not listed on the menu. He rolled his eyes, sighed heavily and glared at us before finally running down the list. Then he ignored us for the rest of the meal because he was flirting with a woman at a nearby table. I reported him to the manager on the way out the door. As far as tipping in other countries - it is not necessary because servers make a much higher hourly wage than they do here. For example, in Australia, they make around $30 per hour. Which is also why the food in restaurants there is so expensive. So, one way or the other, you’re still paying.

It would appear that MEN can win women's swimming championships when we THROW OUT rules to allow this injustice to actual women. The transgender movement being foisted upon us should bring all the so-called women's groups into a RAGE, except they only appear to be grounded to the unholy grail of ABORTION so they don't say anything about this The 1619 project was CREATED to stir up controversy suggesting everything in this county was bad even BEFORE the Founders created a government which was designed to create "checks and balances" so one branch was not more powerful than another. Some of then did have slaves, so that means that every idea they ever came up with must be thrown out? Like the characters in Oliver Stone's "JFK" when Kevin Costner acting as Jim Garrison say "just because a woman is a prostitute, does that mean she has 'bad eyes'". So it is now expected that whatever SHE says is to be taken as Gospel without question? Tipping for good service should be expected. Exception service deserves more tipping. It's NOT RACIST to show appreciation for good service-- not everything is tied to slavery. The 1619 stuff was CREATED by the New York Times, who is now coming clean about the Hunter Biden laptop with emails showing corruption that ultimately created a false Presidency now that "the coast is clear" and impending doom for hiding it away for almost a year and a half "All the news that's fit to pring" indeed. More like "all the news we choose to hide from our readers"

As climate breakdown takes hold, more people are likely to be affected by extreme weather, including flash floods, heatwaves, more violent storms and coastal storm surges, made worse by sea level rises. António Guterres said it was unacceptable that so many people were still not covered by early warning systems,

Many may have to play along with declaring Lia Thomas as one of the greatest female athletes of all time, but everyone else lives on planet Earth where dogs bark, the sky is blue, and men can’t suddenly be women because they said they were. Thomas is definitely a man and there’s no escaping that fact. It’s why when he was declared the winner of the NCAA women’s swimming championship, many people immediately rejected his first-place victory and focused on the girls who finished below him. In one stunning moment, the girls did the same.

A groveling Disney CEO Bob Chapek on Monday told employees the company should have condemned Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill that blocked the teaching of sexuality and transgender ideology to students in kindergarten through third grade, speaking 24-hours hours before mutinous staff planned to walk out during a day-long strike. During an April meeting with Congressional Black Caucus leaders, Biden praised Harris and said she would do 'a hell of a job' handling immigration. 'The vice president corrected him at once,' New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns wrote in their new upcoming book This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America's Future.(Snip)'Harris worried that Biden's staff looked down on her; she fixated

The upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy and Tron rollercoasters are just two projects in the pipeline at Disney World that could be delayed if employees who are protesting the company's response to Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' bill get their way. Protesters have asked the company to halt donations to politicians involved in the passage of the bill, such as Gov. Ron DeSantis—but they also want Disney to stop all 'construction and investment in the state of Florida' until the bill is repealed.(Snip)Gov. Ron DeSantis, however, says the bill's aim is to 'empower parents' in their children's education, and make teachers recognize the distinction between 'instruction' and 'discussion.'
