A Minneapolis police officer has been charged in connection with a crash that killed 40-year-old Leneal Frazier this past summer. (snip) The driver of the Kia sped off, and Cummings pursued the vehicle in his marked squad car with sirens and lights activated, the complaint says.
The chase continued for more than 20 blocks through north Minneapolis, including through residential neighborhoods.
At high speeds — at or approaching 100 miles per hour..

The man who was killed wasn't the man the cop was chasing.

A man crashes his car after driving recklessly while evading the police and the policeman is charged in his death?

What is the PD policy on pursuits? Interestingly that isn't mentioned. Was he operating within policy? If so, he is innocent and shouldn't even be charged.

When I hear sirens. I get off the road. Apparently city folk don't. Then the cop gets charged with the death the dead guy caused.
I think the whoe cop shop should turn in their equipment and quit. They can't win even when they're doing their job. What's the point? If the citizens of MPLS wanna live in a jungle, why the heck can't they?

Sometimes it helps to read the article before posting.
FTA...'As the pursuit continued, Frazier's[the man killed] Jeep was entering the intersection on a green light, which gave him the right of way. The Kia[the car the cop was chasing] and [the cop]Cummings both had a red light as the Kia drove through the intersection at nearly 100 miles per hour, "barely" missing Frazier's Jeep, the complaint states. Cummings' squad car entered the intersection against the red light and hit Frazier's Jeep on the driver's side.'

Any police officer in Minnesota needs to get clear of that state while he or she still can.

Cop cars in pursuit blow through red lights all the time, same with ambulances and fire trucks. That’s why they have sirens and lights - so that you get out of the way. If the victim had been white, there would be no charges. The Minneapolis courts know that they have to charge the cop if the victim is black or else they get more riots. Who cares if they ruin a man’s life as long as the blacks are happy.

Ok, the article says the officer had lights and sirens chasing the stolen vehicle and they ran though a red light which is where Frazier's vehicle entered the intersection. WAS HE DEAF AND BLIND??? If there are lights and sirens, it doesn't matter what color the light is, THE POLICE have the right of way plus a car had just blown through the red light and Frazier still entered the intersection. Another case of Minneapolis not being the place to be a cop.

Sales of glass bottles and gasoline have surged. Limited availability due to supply chain crisis.
No arson expected before February.

One might conclude that the police must stop at red lights while in pursuit of a car that doesn't.
The charge seems odd. But keep an open mind. We weren't there. The reporter wasn't there. And those who later investigated weren't either.

Gee...din't notice the flashing multicolored lights and LOUD siren? "Barely missed" by the 100mph Kia...and now the COP gets charged not the stolen Kia guy?

I only read the one article but the charge seams plausible. If I hear a siren I look for the cop car. Could be two streets away going the other direction. I don't pull over cuz I'll cause an accident.
I have never seen a cop or fire truck blow through a red light at 80 mph. You are trained on when to break off a chase.
The perp resisting arrest however should be the one charged w 1st degree.

OK - I am the first to defend police doing their job. Have close family members in law enforcement. But - I would wait on passing judgement on this particular incident. What is the Minn. police policy governing pursuits in the city? 78 mph IS fast in a normally 25 mph zone. The victim should have been aware of the lights and siren? I would agree except I almost collided with a fire truck emerging from a residential street because I neither heard the sirens or saw the lights until the truck had cleared the last house! Sound is funny and especially at that speed it may not always precede the arrival of the police car. Depends upon the surrounding buildings. Should the victim have been aware after the pursued vehicle passed him at 100 mph? Maybe. I would be trying to figure out what just happened. We are probably talking about seconds here.
I don’t like the knee jerk reaction to sue the police over every black victim but I would want an investigation. I think this is going to be sad - already is sad for the victim’s family. Ultimately the driver of the Kia bears responsibility.
