A scathing new report commissioned by members of Congress has claimed that the Navy's surface warfare forces have systemic training and leadership issues, including a focus on diversity that overshadows basic readiness skills. The report prepared by Marine Lt. Gen. Robert Schmidle and Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery, both retired, came in response to recent Naval disasters, including the burning of the USS Bonhomme Richard in San Diego, two collisions involving Navy ships in the Pacific and the surrender of two small craft to Iran.(Snip)The report found that a staggering 94 percent of the subjects believed the recent Naval disasters were 'part of a broader problem in Navy culture

FTA: 'Sometimes I think we care more about whether we have enough diversity officers than if we'll survive a fight with the Chinese navy,' lamented one lieutenant currently on active duty. 'It's criminal. They think my only value is as a black woman. But you cut our ship open with a missile and we'll all bleed the same color,' she added.

IMO, the article is pretty accurate. Navy JOs (ENS, LTjgs, LTs) know weak/careerist/BS leadership when they see it. Years of zero error mentality, careerism and advancement/promotion through "sucking up to the boss" has resulted in many (not all) senior officers and enlisted being a big part of the problem. The monkey in the tree analogy holds in many of these cases. When the senior looks down, all he/she see are smiles and grins. When the junior looks up all they see are arse holes. Warfighter acumen, morale, retention, unity of effort are all suffering due to poor leadership up and down the chain of command and resultant caustic command climate.

Wonderful! Not only are we unprepared, now everyone knows that we are unprepared! Great idea to make the findings public! While I grudgingly agree that we all need to know that PC culture has overtaken the warrior culture, I am sure that Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran are happy with this tidbit of information. I'm sure they will be culturally, racially, and gender identity sensitive when they attack our warships.

I do not recall ever seeing an article about anyone messing with the Chinese or Russian Navy, much less capturing vessels, bombing vessels in port, playing chicken on the high seas or the airspace above, or the slightest indication that their navies are in the least concerned for political correctness or what the media think. War is hell. When the balloon goes up, we better be ready, because our continent is no longer protected by the ocean or the vessels upon it.
