Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court ruled Friday that election officials must accept mail-in ballots even if the signatures on them don’t match those on file for a voter. It might seem obvious, but in all the racket that follows a debate the most important focus is how it affects the race, if at all.
It was a solid debate — despite more questions geared toward former Vice President Joe Biden and against President Donald Trump, and with moderator Kristen Welker interrupting the president 24 times to Biden’s two, by Fox’s count. On the most important count, however, Trump won the debate hands down. Here’s three reasons why.
Pennsylvania
As Welker attempted to move from energy to the next topic in the last half hour of the debate, Trump asked a pointed question:

The latest revelations about Biden family influence peddling in China are having an adverse effect on the patriarch’s prospects of becoming President. Despite the best efforts of the Fourth Estate and the big social media platforms to censor the story, it is eroding Biden’s lead in the polls and has driven his campaign back into its Delaware hideout. Thus, with the grim inevitability of Greek tragedy, the New York Times has suddenly discovered that President Trump is the true villain of the piece. Before he became President, it seems, Trump pursued a few unconsummated business deals in China and has a dormant bank account there.
President Trump needed a strong debate performance to have any hope of slowing Joe Biden's momentum in the closing days of the 2020 campaign. And a strong debate performance is what he delivered. Trump didn't interrupt Biden or moderator Kristen Welker of NBC News. There was considerably less shouting than at the first debate. You could actually understand what was going on. And Trump was on message. He contrasted his record, policies, and outsider persona with Biden's. He argued for coping with the pandemic while reopening the economy and resuming in-person schooling.
In the Trump era, the U.S. electorate has become less divided by race.
That might read like a typo. Throughout the 2016 campaign, pundits (including myself) posited that Donald Trump’s nomination would deepen the Republican Party’s woes with Black and Hispanic voters while potentially gaining the party some aggrieved white voters who had been deaf to its past nominees’ racial dog whistles — but could hear the billionaire’s foghorn loud and clear. Summarizing the conventional wisdom of four years ago, Peter Beinart wrote in The Atlantic that “by stigmatizing undocumented immigrants, Republicans have catalyzed the Latino cohesion that could be their undoing.” The election returns told a different story.

With just 12 days to go before the election, President Trump’s approval rating has popped over 50%, considered the holy grail of reelection numbers.
In today’s Rasmussen Reports survey, which Trump closely watches, the president’s rating jumped 3 points, from 49% to 52% in the three-day average the pollster puts out in its “Daily Presidential Tracking Poll.”
Trump’s numbers in the past month have looked like a scattershot, but he is recently on an upward trend.

NASHVILLE — Two of Joe Biden’s top allies in Texas pleaded Thursday for him to pay attention to the state, venting frustration at his lack of investment despite vast resources and signs that Texas is closer than it’s been in decades to slipping from the GOP grip.
“We need some help from the national ticket,” said Beto O’Rourke, the former El Paso congressman who nearly toppled Sen. Ted Cruz two years ago.
“The voters in Texas are doing their part,” he said on a Texas Democratic Party call to preview Thursday night’s presidential debate in Nashville.
Julián Castro, the former Obama housing secretary and San Antonio mayor, echoed the demand.
In an interview with National Public Radio’s public editor today, Terence Samuel, managing editor for news, explained why readers haven’t seen any stories about the New York Post’s Hunter Biden email scoop.
“We don’t want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don’t want to waste the listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions,” Samuel reasoned. “And quite frankly, that’s where we ended up, this was . . . a politically driven event and we decided to treat it that way.”
Samuel, sadly, speaks for much of the media, which has ignored or dismissed the emails out of hand.
The Lincoln Project, a group of former Republicans who openly oppose President Trump, shared a message on social media that originated with an Iranian disinformation campaign seeking to influence the 2020 presidential election.
"The Proud Boys are attempting to scare voters away from the polls," read a tweet from the group. "This is punishable by up to a year in jail and a blatant attempt to prevent people from voting. Let's find them and make them famous." The tweet has since been deleted.
This was Donald Trump’s best presidential debate ever. His GOP primary debates in 2016 were of a different sort, for different purposes, with different targets. But this was a fabulous presidential debate for him. His best.
It also was a pretty decent night for Joe Biden.
Like so many others, I have no idea how sharply accurate or wildly inaccurate the polls are. Unlike people polled about anything else, the one polling topic that is dangerous for many is to say that one supports Trump for President. You might get suspended from your job. You might get fired. There may be a Twitter storm aimed at destroying you.

The president’s depiction of where Joe Biden hails from — The Swamp — proved more revelatory. “You’re ‘the big guy,’ I think,” Trump said of his opponent. “Your son said we have to give 10 percent to the big man. Joe, what’s that all about? It’s terrible.” The former vice president denied profiting off his son’s foreign dealings and even lamely blamed the story, buttressed by the physical evidence of Hunter Biden’s computer and the CEO of his company confirming the authenticity of the emails, on the Russians.
The moment Donald Trump and Joe Biden appeared on the stage, Trump was in control. He looked robust, while Biden appeared frail and slow. Trump’s dominance extended beyond looks. He ably defended his record against attacks from both Biden and the moderator, Kristen Welker. He also politely, but insistently, pressed Biden on his decades of failure, the damage he caused to the black community, and his corrupt dealings with his son, Hunter. It was a rout.

The coronavirus, like so many other social ills, real and metaphorical, incubated in major cities.
New York City, with the highest population density in the country, also accounted for the highest death toll. San Francisco, the second highest among large cities, was a major incubator.
Pandemic maps of the death toll show the deaths concentrating around major cities before making the slow trek from urban into suburban and eventually rural areas. The urban lockdowns didn’t stop the spread of the virus. What they really did was trap poor and middle class residents in urban areas, while the wealthy fled, and the virus spread to urbanites with the least mobility.
Democratic nominee Joe Biden lied his way through the final presidential debate with President Donald Trump. NBC News correspondent Kristen Welker interrupted Trump more than she interrupted Biden, and Biden was the first person to interrupt a fellow candidate on the stage. Nevertheless, this debate proved far more civil than the first debate.
Trump cleaned Biden’s clock on a few issues, while Biden more frequently hoisted himself on his own petard. The president did a good job of standing back and letting Biden dig himself into a hole. When Trump called him out on previous statements Biden had made, the Democrat merely claimed he never made those statements.
Thursday night in Nashville, the Commission on Presidential Debates did what the news media have been trying to do for four years — silence President Donald Trump. That lasted for only two minutes at a clip.
After that, moderator Kristen Welker of NBC News spent all night interrupting the president. But despite that, a debate did happen and it didn’t go anywhere near as she planned.
Trump forced discussion of the economy, scandal allegations against Biden and Biden’s 1994 crime bill that harmed tens of thousands of African-American young men.
And Trump did it with a kinder, gentler tone. In fact, it was Biden who came across as angrier —
The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted to advance Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court nomination to the Senate floor. The Senate is expected to vote on Monday, with confirmation seemingly in the bag.
The Judiciary Committee vote was unanimous. Democrats boycotted the session.
Committee rules require that two members of the minority party to be present for business to be conducted. However, chairman Lindsey Graham proceeded with the vote anyway. “We’re not going to allow [Democrats] to take over the committee,” he stated.
Gene Simmons is leaving the Southern California life after nearly four decades. The legendary KISS singer and bassist has decided to pick up and move his family to Washington State, citing high property taxes in California as a motivating factor. [snip] 'California and Beverly Hills have been treating folks that create jobs badly and the tax rates are unacceptable,' Simmons told the Journal. 'I work hard and pay my taxes and I don’t want to cry the Beverly Hills blues but enough is enough.'
President Trump called out Joe Biden for his support of banning fracking during Thursday night’s debate, noting that during the primaries Joe repeatedly said he wanted to ban fracking. The president pointed out that after he won the nomination, Biden went to Pennsylvania, a battleground state that relies on fracking and natural gas for its economy, and changed his position. Joe Biden, true to form, denied it.
“I never said I oppose fracking,” Biden said.
“You said it on tape!” Trump pointed out.
“Show the tape,” Biden responded. “Put it on your website.”
“I’ll put it on,” Trump replied.
It was quite a moment during the final debate between President Trump and Joe Biden when they were discussing immigration and Biden tried to gain the moral high ground on the issue. Trump was clearly prepared for the attack.
Kristen Welker began the topic by saying to Trump, “Your administration separated children from their families at the border,” before referring to a recent story that the parents of 500 kids at the border can’t be located.
Trump explained that children aren’t just brought here by their families, but by coyotes and cartels as a means of getting into the United States.
