Chicago saw its deadliest Memorial Day weekend in years this weekend, even though a coronavirus-related lockdown is still in effect and will continue to be in effect until the end of May. Gun violence typically ticks up in the city as the weather warms up, and Memorial Day weekend is often the start of a brutal and violent summer, tinged with gang violence on Chicago’s south and west sides. This year has been no exception; according to public television station WTTW, homicides and gun violence are on the upswing in the city, even though most of the city’s recreational activities are shut down to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus

One somber way to think of Memorial Day is to count the number of those who have died in service of this great, good country. Official totals say that figure is at least 1,354,664. The number causes a lump in the throat and a very large twinge in the heart. Still, numbers are rather antiseptic. They hide the individuals, cannot account for the pain and suffering, and pay no homage in themselves to the causes for which those individuals died. The numbers are sobering but not inspirational. Each one of those individuals had a story. Each one had family, friends, colleagues. All of them wore their nation’s uniforms, experienced fear, suffered hardships.

Occasionally, however, the turning point is blindingly obvious. President Reagan’s 1984 reelection, for example, was all but assured when Walter Mondale included a promise to raise taxes in his speech accepting the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Likewise, former Vice President Joe Biden almost certainly handed the 2020 election to President Trump last Friday when he told an African-American interviewer, “If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.”

Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, received $80 million in Paycheck Protection Program loans designed to assist small businesses survive in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. While there was widespread media outcry over corporations getting this funding, compete will calls for them to return the money, there has been relative quiet over 38 Planned Parenthood affiliates across the country receiving millions of dollars of aid included in the $2.3 trillion coronavirus stimulus measure. And now Democrats are making a public appeal to let the abortion providers keep the money, insisted they are non-profit “health centers” — how’s that for audacity?
Obama should apologize to Trump replies

Anyone who has children understands the importance of teaching them to say ‘sorry’ when they’ve done wrong. Apologizing for causing harm to others teaches our young to be empathetic. Being able to say sorry helps knit the fabric of society together. Otherwise, our social contract would devolve into petty squabbles and endless lawsuits. Alas, in the last few decades, as America has become more and more engaged in a cold civic war, we appear to have lost the ability to be contrite, especially in politics. We now know unequivocally that there was no substantial basis for the investigation of Donald Trump, his campaign, and those associated with him for Russian collusion.

By its very nature, Memorial Day is a time for nostalgia – a sentimental longing for the members of our military who died too young and too soon. What could they have done with their lives had they lived decades longer? Could some have changed history with new inventions, or new discoveries in science and medicine? Undoubtedly some would have become great teachers, elected officials, doctors, business leaders, and filled hundreds of other professions and trades. And no doubt many would have become parents, bringing children into the world who could have accomplished great things as well.

“The Last Dance,” the ESPN documentary about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, gave a new spark to the debate over who’s the greatest basketball player of all time. Most fans have said it would come down to two players: Jordan and LeBron James. Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, appearing on SportsCenter, weighed in on the debate. Johnson offered high praise for James saying he’s probably the best all-around basketball player ever, but he said he still would put Jordan in the number one spot. “First of all, let’s not take anything away from LeBron James,” Johnson said, “because LeBron James is a great basketball player,

Up to 94 percent of American voters say they want an economic nationalist overhaul of the United States’ economy in the wake of the Chinese coronavirus crisis, a survey reveals. Several Democrats who have insisted on strict stay-at-home orders — including the wearing of face masks when out of doors — have been caught violating the rules that they wish to impose on others for fear of spreading the coronavirus. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D), who has suggested he might make wearing face masks mandatory, was spotted on the boardwalk in Virginia Beach on Saturday — without a mask. The Daily Beast quoted a spokesperson for the governor, who tried to help him save face: Alena Yarmosky, a spokeswoman for the Democratic governor—a physician who has repeatedly urged Virginians to wear face coverings in public—

Pastor Darrell Scott says that Donald Trump is the most pro-black president in his lifetime and that goes back to the 1950s. Scott also called out the relentlessly anti-Trump mainstream media echo chamber for demonizing the president on race relations. The pastor who endorsed Trump in 2016 and served on his transition team made his feelings about the 45th president abundantly clear during Trump’s listening session with African-American leaders at the Ford Motor plant in Ypsilanti, Mich.“I said it before unashamedly and I say it again: This president has been — I’ve lived under 12 presidential administrations. I was born during the Eisenhower’s administration.

The New York Times published an editorial on the first day of Memorial Day weekend asking: “Why Does the U.S. Military Celebrate White Supremacy?”The article‘s byline is the entire editorial board, and it is accompanied by an image of a bullet shaped like a Ku Klux Klan robe. The central complaint of the article is that there are U.S. military bases named after Confederate Army officers: This same toxic legacy clings to the 10 United States military installations across the South that were named for Confederate Army officers during the first half of the 20th century. Apologists often describe the names as a necessary gesture of reconciliation
