“The Last Dance,” the ESPN documentary about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, gave a new spark to the debate over who’s the greatest basketball player of all time.
Most fans have said it would come down to two players: Jordan and LeBron James. Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, appearing on SportsCenter, weighed in on the debate. Johnson offered high praise for James saying he’s probably the best all-around basketball player ever, but he said he still would put Jordan in the number one spot.
“First of all, let’s not take anything away from LeBron James,” Johnson said, “because LeBron James is a great basketball player,

Excuse me, but this seems like the same question the disciples were asking of Jesus. Who really cares whether Michael Jordan or LeBron James is the greatest player of all times? The glory goes to God. These are gifts and talents given to them and anyone else that plays basketball. Personally, I find it bothersome that these are the only two names provided when there are so many talented basketball players.

Truth be told - - Magic Johnson was better than both of them.
If I could put together a fantasy basketball team - - Magic would be my first choice - - not Michael or Lebron.

National Navel Gazing at its finest. I really enjoy playing HORSE with the grandkids but I don't miss the National Thugball League at all. Especially when it's current biggest name , Lebron, has sold his soul to the WuTangClan in Beijing .

Throw in off-court success in marketing and it's a blow out.

Jordan by a landslide. I can't stand LeBron; he needs to shut up and play basketball. Jordan knew how to keep his freakin mouth shut about stuff he didn't know anything about. He was magical on the court; you can't deny that. LeBron? Meh.

I guess Larry Bird suffers from a lack of melanin content.

I'm with you #7. Larry Bird always has taken a back seat due to melanin content.
In the end, who cares! Vote Trump or this country as we know it dies!

We forget, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Walt Frazier and others as well. Agree Magic should be in the mix as well as Larry Bird.

I stopped watching basketball after 1998, so I really can’t say who was better. But Michael Jordan was a great basketball player and it’s hard to imagine someone better.

My son was an avid basketball fan when he was in high school and he thought Pistol Pete Maravich was the best!

Wilt Chamberlain still holds 68 NBA records, most of which will never be broken. He’s the greatest player in the history of the league. All these other guys are ruminating about who’s second. Like all polls, people just remember who they last saw or whose been hyped in contemporary times. ESPN is just promoting itself. There have many great players, from George Mikan on up. Magic, Baylor, Jabbar, Bird, Robinson, etc. Look at the Hall of Famers. Go look at the records for points scored, rebounds, and assists for games, seasons, careers!! Most of the people in this discussion have never seen Wilt and his dominance in basketball.

Physically, LeBron is a beast, but Michael had more game skills. LeBron shopped teams and was surrounded by incredible talent on most of his teams. Michael Jordan had a team of complimentary players and HORRIBLE centers, yet has NEVER given up in a championship series, Lebron has... a couple of times. Maybe it's because Michael has never lost in a championship series other than the season he came back for the last month after spending most of the season playing BASEBALL. Finally, Michael NEVER took sides politically, despite tremendous pressure from black leadership and the media. We have a clear winner!

Is this a survey on who is or was the best ball hog? Because it is a TEAM sport and no one person can do it all against a well coached team of players who look for the open man. No ONE player can win the game, even if they are Wilt Chamberlain and score 100 points by themselves. Yes, he did that. The other issue is you have to compare Jordan and James against players who were penalized if they took the little slide step that the league allowed when Jordan used it on almost every move to the basket.
You want greatest individual player who literally changed the game? Wilt Chamberlain and George Mikan forced rules to keep them from dominating the game. Rule changes like adding the 3 point shot was to help some players dominate the game. Two very different concepts. This glorification of one player is a symptom of our egotist age. Look up the Boston Celtics when Cousy and Russell were in their prime and you see that they would beat any team Jordan or James was on. Especially if they played by 1960s rules.
