You probably haven’t heard about the sixteen-year-old girl who got murdered by five other kids early last Monday afternoon on a quiet little street in the quiet little town of Biloxi, Mississippi. If the circumstances had been altered slightly, it would be the only news story you’d heard about all week. You’d also continue to hear about it for years. Madison Harris, 16, had been living at her paternal grandmother’s house since her parents were divorced four years ago.

“People across this country — Republicans, independents, and Democrats — agree that our top priority has to be fighting corruption in Washington,” Massachusets Sen. Elizabeth Warren said in an ad broadcast thousands of times in Iowa ahead of the Feb. 3 caucuses. “I’m not doing big-dollar fundraisers. I’m not selling ambassadorships to donors. I’m not cozying up to super PACs.” For rank-and-file Democrats, who take it as a matter of faith that "corrupt" campaign finance is the root of all evil in U.S. politics, this is a powerful message because recent history has proven that no amount of facts or evidence can dissuade them from this dogma. The Supreme Court will hear arguments on Tuesday in a case over whether the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the regulatory agency established in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, is constitutionally structured. The case, key to the future of the CFPB, could also have broad implications on other independent federal agencies, according to experts. A decision is expected by the end of June. The dispute turns on whether the CFPB’s director is given too much independence. Under the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act, which established the regulator, the agency is headed by a single director who may be removed by the president from his or her five-year term

It could go at least two ways. The best-case scenario for President Trump is that the virus doesn’t spread widely within America. Mr. Trump could then claim credit for stopping it. The stock market would bounce back. The episode could then draw public attention to the fact that for all of his critics’ efforts to depict him as somehow abnormal, Mr. Trump’s team is hardly a bunch of amateurs. Vice President Pence is leading efforts against the virus. As governor of Indiana, Mr.Pence had helped stop an HIV outbreak by authorizing a needle exchange program.

Unprecedented, unprecedented. Everything is unprecedented. Nothing like this has ever happened before. Except it pretty much has. Whenever you see the word “unprecedented” in the media, you should ask yourself: Has this reporter ever read a history book? Make the case against Trump if you want to, but if you pretend the sorts of things he does are without precedent, you simply make yourself look ignorant. Virtually any presidency you examine is guilty of far worse acts than whatever you think is the worst thing Trump has ever done, from John Adams’ Alien and Sedition Acts, a breathtaking offense against freedom that was meant to punish political

You would have thought that the vibe at CPAC this year would involve stressing about our November election prospects, but even as the market dipped over the coronavirus scare the general consensus was that whether we face Vermont Stalin or that miserable monied midget, we got this. The common image of conservatives is one of dour pessimism, but that is less due to some inherent doom-mongering on the right than to the decades of failure by Conservative Inc. Under the wise, steady guidance of our establishment betters, all we did was lose, but Donald Trump gave the cons a taste of winning, and they like it.

Bernie Sanders‘ hard-left sympathies just keep bubbling up like an overheated pot of red stew. He announced this past week his $1.5 trillion plan for “universal” free child care. Even the “rich” would qualify for it. Would stay-at-home parents get any help? You are such a foolish child. The Vermont socialist’s plan goes beyond even Elizabeth Warren’s and Pete Buttigieg’s means-tested schemes, which would allegedly cost taxpayers “only” $700 billion. Speaking of Mayor Pete, he welcomed a 9-year-old boy on stage to “come out” and identify as homosexual. Not every Marxist assault on our way of life involves tax-and-spend economics.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is currently the youngest man still standing in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.Biden’s distinction comes as 38-year-old Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, dropped his presidential bid on Sunday after a weak showing in South Carolina on Saturday. That contest also claimed the candidacy of billionaire hedge fund manager Tom Steyer, who is 62.Of the men remaining on the Democratic side, former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders are both 78, although Bloomberg’s birthday was last month and Sanders will turn 79 in September.

Bernie Sanders just lost his first primary of 2020. He’ll lose a few more on Tuesday. But as of now, in terms of delegates and polling alike, Bernie Sanders remains the Democratic front-runner. And Joe Biden has wound up, ironically, not as the frontrunner but as the ‘Stop Bernie!’ candidate. South Carolina was Biden’s first primary win in any of the presidential races he’s ever run, which stretch back to 1988. He’s had his eye on the White House for a very long time, and voters have consistently found other Democrats more compelling — other Democrats like Michael Dukakis, not just other Democrats like Barack Obama.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg explained in an interview with “60 Minutes” why he believes America will choose him over President Donald Trump this fall by characterizing those who swept Trump into office as mounting a “revolution” against the educated elite. “A few years ago there was a revolution against the intelligentsia,” Bloomberg told CBS’ Scott Pelley. “People said, ‘you know, those people, particularly on the coasts, are trying to tell us what to do.’ They wanted a change. That explains Donald Trump. Now, people seem to have changed. This cycle, people want stability.”

Coronavirus, the mysterious illness blanketing the world courtesy China, continues to spread. The United States has been, until this past weekend, spared breakout flares. They are occurring now. Soon, and with better and more ubiquitous testing, America’s COVID-19 numbers will spike. That will scare a lot of people. It shouldn’t. It’s what happens when the government broadens testing criteria and has more effective tests. When local COVID-19 hot spots happen, some communities, school systems, hospital systems, etc. will be under quarantine. Many of those tangentially related to the outbreak will be asked to quarantine at home. It’s time to think ahead about this possibility.

While most people at CPAC are excited to meet members of Congress, I tend to gravitate to vendors, authors, and everyday patriots in attendance. From among the many vendors selling Trump gear, Mary had to have a “Trump” purse shaped like a Coke can. Mary shot a short video of my interview with Mary Lou, the vendor. One of the most creative things I saw was the Trump hammocks. Enjoy this short video of my interview with Steve, the hammock designer.

A federal judge ruled Sunday that one of the Trump administration's top immigration officials, Ken Cuccinelli, was unlawfully appointed to his post because of a decades-old law on federal vacancies. U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss ruled that Cuccinelli's appointment as the acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) circumvented a law that said a senior government position could be filled only if the Senate first approved the individual. It was not immediately clear what impact this would have on Cuccinelli's tenure, if any.
