A bill that would make Washington, D.C., the 51st U.S. state was approved by a Democratic-led House committee last week, setting the stage for a vote by the full chamber in the near future. If it passes, as expected, it will be the first time the campaign to bestow statehood on the nation’s capital has been endorsed by one of the chambers of Congress. Republicans in the Senate are expected to swiftly reject the bill, however, continuing a legacy of partisan sparring over the District of Columbia that has been going on for more than two centuries. Should Texas become 5, maybe 10 or 15 states, 2 Republican Senators from each? Don't push your luck, Yahoo.

The popular belief is it should be burned to the ground and moved to a place where Life , Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness still means what the Founders intended.

Sadly this will go on for our entire existence. Since it wasn't put in the Constitution, but merely a compromise of the Residence Act of 1790, back when compromise was an honorable thing, we will have to leave it to the children of the Capitol.

There should not BE any permanent residents in DC. They should all commute in from outside the borders and dwell in States bordering DC. I believe that was the original intent.
In pre-civil war days, only property - slaves and indentured servents - resided permanently with, and they had no voting rights.
In these days, if you work in DC, you should be living somewhere else.

If you put in a bad bill often enough one day it will pass.
There are many bad bills today that just got approved because some clown kept putting it it,
The DC Sttehood bin has been going on for over 50 years now. Every year it comes up to be defeated.
Keep defeating it. It's a bad bill.

Enhanced retrocession. Make it part of Maryland (someone proposed calling it Douglass County, after Frederick Douglass) and let them vote for a Representative and Senators in Maryland. Federal property would remain under control of the federal government.

It's a stupid corrupt to the core city. Leftists will try anything to pack the Senate with another couple of Dem Senate votes. like Hawaii.
Come to think of it, I thought the leftists wanted to make Puerto Rico a State, maybe even Guam?

The only reason that the Democrats are pushing for DC to be a State is that they see visions of two new DC liberal Democrat US Senators and at least one new DC Liberal Democrat Congressional Representative. The wimpy Republicans would be shooting themselves in the foot big time if they went along with such a liberal Democrat political plan. Only a naive and globalist so-called Republican like Romney would go along with that.

Oh sure why not we could use a good laugh. Make the crack head twice elected mayor for life. DC would be like a permanent clown circus. Notice democrats only propose things that are sure winners for them. If illegals were crossing the border to become Republican voters/supporter the wall would already be built with machine guns mounted on top of it by democrats.
If Republicans would have proposed this move you could bet the democrats would be up in arms but it benefits them because they own the stinking place. Yeah sure why not just do it.

Maryland should take it's land back, leaving just enough property to allow the downtown federal district to remain under federal control.

So as to not only rule over us but to have an equal footing with us. We will never break free of the deep state if DC shouuld become a state. Frankly, I cannot see ANY state blue or red wanting a dilution of their standing but then again some of these blue states think murdering children is a good thing.

Yet more evidence that bad ideas from Democrats are like vampires. They never die.
We need to take ideas like this and put a stake through their hearts permanently. (Rush was wrong during the Gingrich Revolution when he said we need to keep a few liberals around for posterity.)
It's time to establish commitment to the Constitution as written as the heritage of our citizens that needs to be protected from all forms of anti-American, Statist, do-gooders.

No, not a chance. However a different form of funding that city should be found, rather than forcing the mayor to go groveling for funds to congress like a bad David Copperfield movie. Our nation's capitol should be a bright and shining example of American values instead of being like some high violence third world country. Just saying.

The history is interesting. The District once consisted of two counties: Washington County north of the Potomac and Alexandria County to the south. In 1846 Alexandria County was retroceded to Virginia because otherwise slave trading in the City of Alexandria would have been illegal. The remainder of D.C. then consisted of Washington County with the two cities of Washington and Georgetown, plus rural areas, until 1871. In that year Washington County was abolished and the City of Washington annexed the whole District. (Maybe that's where New York got the idea to grab its surrounding counties.)
Anyway, there's just one flaw in the idea of retroceding D.C. to Maryland: Maryland probably doesn't want it. If you were Maryland, would you?
