Speaking at an event in Chicago called the "Obama Foundation Summit" (were any heads of state present?), Michelle Obama let slip her resentment of white people. The grudge goes back to her childhood, and she does not seem to see much progress in the behavior she attributes to Caucasian-Americans. Fox News reports what the New York Times doesn't: White Americans are "still running" elsewhere when minorities and immigrants move into their communities, Michelle Obama observed Tuesday. This analogy perfectly fits the impeachment scenario now playing out in Washington. The nation is beginning to see the ugliness of the establishment, people who believe they have a divine right (if they believed in the divine) to run the federal government. If that right is ever challenged, that's when the long knives come out. Secret testimonies, barring Republicans from calling their own witnesses or cross-examining the ones Democrats have subpoenaed, and now a federal judge's ruling that secret grand jury records from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation must be turned over to House Democrats--this is how the establishment fights back.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit temporarily halted the release of grand jury materials from former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation Tuesday, just hours ahead of their scheduled distribution. A three-judge panel issued a short directive saying the grand jury documents will be temporarily withheld while it considers an emergency appeal from the Department of Justice (DOJ), which hopes to shield those materials on a permanent basis.“The purpose of this administrative stay is to give the court sufficient opportunity to consider the emergency motion for stay pending appeal and should not be construed

Washington It has taken a long time, but finally the Justice Department is training its guns on what heretofore was unthinkable, unless you are a career civil libertarian. For years the civil libertarians have been warning us that the intelligence community posed a threat to democracy, as we know it in these United States. Every so often they would point to some excess of the FBI or the CIA and tell us that the lights were going out in democratic America. Does not the Washington Post run atop its front page the maudlin line, “Democracy Dies in Darkness”? Well, the darkness descended upon Donald Trump the moment

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff is reportedly telling witnesses testifying in the impeachment inquiry not to answer questions by certain Republicans. While speaking with reporters on Capitol Hill, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise slammed the secretive process, pointing out that Schiff gets to choose all the witnesses, but that he's also "directing witnesses not to answer questions that he doesn’t want the witness to answer if they’re asked by Republicans.” If true, this is, by definition, witness tampering. According to U.S. Code § 1512, anyone who "knowingly uses intimidation, threatens, or corruptly persuades another person, or attempts to do so, or engages in misleading conduct toward another person,

Is the solid Democratic front in favor impeachment beginning to crumble? It’s probably more correct to say that it never existed at all. We got two clear signs this week that rank-and-file enthusiasm for the Pelosi/Schiff effort to rid the country of the Orange Menace is, shall we say, well-controlled. New Jersey Democrat Jeff Van Drew stated that he was likely to vote against Pelosi’s resolution to “formalize” the impeachment inquiry when it comes up Thursday, or Friday, or sometime before the end of the Holocene.Van Drew told NBC reporter Alex Moe that “I would imagine that I’m not voting for it.”

One way or another, Nancy Pelosi will go down in history. Let’s hope she doesn’t take America with her. The speaker’s decision to go all in on impeachment is fraught with danger and could have fateful consequences far beyond Donald Trump’s presidency. With only about a year to go until the 2020 election, Pelosi has thrown her full weight behind the effort to undo the results of 2016. This is a historic mistake, one that could tear America apart. Based on the evidence the House has made public, impeaching Trump is a meritless, reckless assault on democracy.

In an age of “cafeteria Catholics” who pick and choose which church doctrines they will adhere to and which they will ignore, an age where we have a Pope Francis, who would have us pray for the oceans and invites Amazonian “priests” and their fertility gods into the Vatican, it was refreshing to see a Catholic priest speak truth to power and tell a craven Catholic politician that abortion-on-demand is a moral evil opposed by the Catholic Church and to approve of it means you are unworthy of receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion. .

British lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to hold a December election, in hopes that a switch-up in Parliament will either kill or bring to fruition a final vote on leaving the European Union after the E.U. just extended the Brexit deadline to Jan. 31. The Labour Party and Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservatives were in agreement on a December election. The House of Commons voted 428-20, with dozens of lawmakers abstaining, for a bill authorizing the election on Dec. 12. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn announced his party would back the call for an election after he said the possibility of Britain leaving the E.U. in October without a formal agreement was “off the table.”

A relatively sedate weekend stretch in Washington gave way to a tumultuous Tuesday in Texas, as the Nationals staved off elimination with a 7-2 win in Game 6 of the World Series. Coming into this game, the 2019 World Series seemed like it would end up looking close, because it went six games, when in fact the Astros retook the initiative in Game 3 and never looked back. But the 2019 World Series coughed up a memorable contest that fit the proud legacy of World Series Game 6 classics: 1975, 1986, 2011. This one was, in keeping with the theme of the 2019 playoffs, full of anger and confusion,

The thing has serious weight, both in heft and history. Joey D’Ambrosio eyes the statue on the mantel of his Henderson home, a dark, featureless figure with arms outstretched, holding a gold record above its head. “It’s pretty heavy,” he says. In the most basic sense, it must come in at a good 6 pounds. But what it symbolizes is much heavier: D’Ambrosio’s role in the popularization of rock ’n’ roll. The saxophonist received the token of his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Bill Haley & His Comets in 2012. He played on all of the bands hits, “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” “See You Later Alligator,”

A White House official who testified in front of the House on Tuesday as part of its impeachment investigation reportedly said the White House’s rough transcript of a July phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky left out key words and phrases. (Snip) The omissions do not alter the heart of the conversation, as the reconstructed transcript of the call released by the White House on Sept. 25 shows Trump repeatedly pushing Zelensky to investigate Biden, a top political rival, on unfounded corruption allegations.
