The United States has Turkey floored, economically. It doesn't take much pressure to get the Turks' attention. That's why Turkey is making nice. They have no choice. Eisenhower used the same tactic in 1956 with Britain and France. They were warring on Egypt over the Suez Canal. The economic sanctions he threatened were enough for them to call the whole thing off. FDR used a similar tactic with the Japanese, cutting off their oil imports from the U.S., and forcing them to either back off in China or go to war. They unwisely chose war. Bad decision.

The Supreme Court has agreed to take up a dispute over the constitutionality of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in a case that could dramatically scale back the agency's authority to police financial markets or eliminate it altogether. The court said Friday it will hear a challenge from a California-based law firm that argues the CFPB, the brainchild of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, is unconstitutionally structured. Opponents of the CFPB, created in 2010, argue that its structure violates the separation of powers, as Congress gave it broad authority to regulate mortgages, credit cards, and other consumer products,

After the so-called “blue wave” of Democratic victories in the 2018 midterm election, the grassroots of both parties looked to the 2019 off-year as a testing ground for the 2020 presidential cycles. With only four states in play and sporadic special elections, 2019’s small skirmishes were hailed as indicators for how the Republican Party would fare in 2020. The result? Well, predictions of another blue wave in 2020 have been tempered by a steady GOP wave in 2019 that signals bad news for Democrats as congressional redistricting kicks off.

And under China’s present leader, Xi Jinping, who took office in 2013, it has only become more entrenched: last year he changed the longstanding rules of succession to allow himself to remain in charge for life.
