The manual was created to bring judges up to speed on fundamental scientific understanding. Few — if any — federal judges are chemists, geologists or climatologists.

His name? Ashir Haji-Mohamed. The latter part of the name meant that he had made a pilgrimage to the Islamic holy city of Mecca.
