At the time, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) proclaimed that "justice has prevailed." I suspect he won't be quite as optimistic about or respectful of the Supreme Court's latest smackdown. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to decide the legality of Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs, setting up a major test of one of the Republican president's boldest assertions of executive power that has been central to his economic and trade agenda.
The justices took up the Justice Department's appeal of a lower court's ruling that Trump overstepped his authority in imposing most of his tariffs under a federal law meant for emergencies. The court swiftly acted after the administration last week asked it to review the case, which implicates trillions of dollars in customs duties over the next decade.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday temporarily allowed the Trump administration to hold on to billions in foreign aid funds that it wants to cancel, setting up a high-stakes battle over the president’s power to unilaterally cancel funds mandated by Congress.
The one-page order, signed by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., paused the part of a lower court ruling that required the government to pay some $4 billion of the $4.9 billion rescissions request that the Trump administration sent to Congress last month.
The Supreme Court order also asked the initial challengers to the funding freeze to respond by this Friday.
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel revealed that the agency has been investigating a stabbing that took place on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, resulting in the death of a Ukrainian refugee.
“The FBI has been investigating the Charlotte train murder from day one,” Patel wrote in a post on X. “Stay tuned.”
Patel’s post comes after Iryna Zarutska, 23, was allegedly stabbed in the throat several times on August 22, 2025, by suspect Decarlos Brown Jr. while riding the Charlotte light rail.
Breitbart News reported that Brown was arrested and charged with first-degree murder regarding the attack on Zarutska.

Trump's lawyers argued his comments about Carroll were protected by presidential immunity and that the verdict in the case was unjust. The three-judge panel rejected both of those claims.

These lower court judges, none of whom had the courage to allow NBC to name them in the article, bewailed the failure of SCOTUS to provide sufficient justification for ruling against them. It’s blindingly obvious, however, that the real issue they are whining about is the Court’s refusal to countenance their usurpation of the President’s Article II powers and frustrate implementation of his agenda.
