WASHINGTON - U.S. authorities are investigating a bogus email purportedly from a Republican lawmaker that contained malware apparently aimed at giving China insights into the Trump administration's trade talks with Beijing, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
The malware in the email that appeared to be sent by Representative John Moolenaar in July to U.S. trade groups, law firms and government agencies was traced by cyber analysts to a hacker group - APT41 - believed to be working for Chinese intelligence, the newspaper said. Moolenaar, a harsh critic of Beijing, is the chairman of a congressional committee focused on strategic competition between China and the United States,

A political storm broke out on September 5 after House Speaker Mike Johnson declared that President Donald Trump acted as an FBI informant in efforts to take down Jeffrey Epstein’s trafficking network. Speaking during a press briefing, Johnson insisted Trump “wasn’t calling Epstein a hoax” but instead recognised the “unspeakable evil” involved, citing Trump’s decision to bar Epstein from Mar-a-Lago in the mid-2000s.
Johnson added that Trump had discussed the matter with him as recently as September 4, describing him as “deeply sympathetic” to Epstein’s victims. His comments echoed a hot mic conversation involving Rep. Mike Collins earlier in the week, first picked up by reporters in Washington.

A 2019 mission in North Korea, which intended to have Navy SEALs plant an electronic device to intercept communications of the country’s leader Kim Jong Un, resulted in an unsuccessful operation that left unarmed North Koreans dead, according to a report from the New York Times on Friday.
The mission, which took place during President Donald Trump’s first term, required the president’s direct approval, the Times reports, and came amid high-level nuclear talks between the US and North Korea.
The White House and Pentagon declined to comment.

There's a Wednesday afternoon ruling out of the Massachusetts District Court in the Harvard funding case brought against the Trump administration by the university and several organizations challenging the administration's decision to freeze and ultimately terminate nearly $2.2 billion in federal grants to Harvard.
The New York Times is describing it largely as a win for Harvard — and it is, in some respects, but not in all of them:
Harvard University won a crucial legal victory in its clash with the Trump administration on Wednesday, when a federal judge said that the government had broken the law by freezing billions of dollars in research funds.

Months after a bitter public feud, US President Donald Trump has softened his tone toward former ally Elon Musk. Speaking on the Scott Jennings Show in an interview recorded Tuesday, Trump indicated that Musk’s political future would inevitably lead him back to the Republican Party.
"I don’t think he has a choice," Trump said, framing Musk’s options as a choice between the GOP on one side and "radical left lunatics" on the other. Despite their past differences, Trump largely complimented the billionaire and downplayed the dispute. "He’s a good man. He got off the reservation, incorrectly, and that’s okay, because, you know, it’s just one of those things," Trump added.

Paramount is on the verge of acquiring Bari Weiss’ right-leaning Free Press news organization, with Weiss set for a top role in running CBS News, TheWrap has learned.
The deal, which is being finalized by Paramount’s lawyers and was first reported by Puck on Wednesday, sets CBS News on a course for a more conservative approach in line with CEO David Ellison’s vision. TheWrap’s reporting suggests it’s likely that Weiss will run CBS News.

Folks, if there’s one thing Donald Trump has mastered, it’s the art of memetic provocation. He’s basically the Troll Master General at this point.
This week, he revealed in an interview he’d be adding a portrait of Joe Biden’s autopen — yes, the autopen, not Biden himself — to his “Presidential Wall of Fame” in the newly renovated White House Rose Garden.
That was fantastic, but the encore may have been better.
Let’s put it this way: Former Obama and Biden staffers might want to check their LinkedIn profiles.

In a surprise move on Tuesday evening, the House Oversight Committee released over 33,000 pages of records pertaining to Jeffrey Epstein, obtained via subpoena directed to the Department of Justice.
WASHINGTON—Today, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released 33,295 pages of Epstein-related records that were provided by the U.S. Department of Justice. On August 5, Chairman Comer issued a subpoena for records related to Mr. Jeffrey Epstein, and the Department of Justice has indicated it will continue producing those records while ensuring the redaction of victim identities and any child sexual abuse material.

A federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday that U.S. President Donald Trump unlawfully invoked the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans he alleged were part of a criminal gang.
In a 2-1 decision, a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a preliminary injunction that blocked the Trump administration from removing a group of Venezuelans under the seldom-used 18th-century law. The Fifth Circuit is the first federal appeals court to rule directly on a March 14 presidential proclamation invoking the 1798 law to justify rapid deportations.
Circuit Judge Leslie Southwick, writing for the two-judge majority, rejected the Trump administration's assertion that the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua

During a presser outside Eagan, Minnesota’s Deerwood Elementary Tuesday, Gov. Tim Walz (D) confirmed he will call an emergency gun control session and criticized the number of guns and “type of guns” in circulation in America.
FOX 9 quoted Walz saying, “The thing that makes America unique in terms of shootings is we just have more guns and the wrong types of guns are on the streets.”
He went on to admit that he is going to need some Republicans to cross the aisle and vote with Democrats in order to secure his gun control package.
Walz added, “If Minnesota lets this moment slide and we determine it’s OK

Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) issued an executive order Tuesday directing the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to work and cooperate with federal law enforcement officials indefinitely.
A press release from Bowser’s office stated that the mayor’s order “continues the work of the Safe and Beautiful Emergency Operations Center (SBEOC) in managing the District’s response to the Safe and Beautiful Task Force,” which was established by President Donald Trump.
The order from Bowser comes as Trump in early August announced that he was “officially invoking section 740 of the district of Columbia Home Rule Act” and that the MPD would be placed under “direct federal control.” Trump also activated the National Guard.
