Trump considers reclassifying marijuana
as less dangerous drug: report

President Donald Trump is weighing whether to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, according to a report. [Snip] This comes after cannabis companies have committed millions of dollars to the president's political groups, according to the report. [Snip] The potential move to remove marijuana from the list of Schedule I controlled substances and make it a Schedule III drug would make it significantly easier to buy and sell cannabis and make the industry more profitable.

Comments:

Yet again, money rears its ugly head regarding marijuana by cannabis companies that contributed millions of dollars to President Trump’s political groups. It is not enough that marijuana has been legalized in some states for medical and recreational usage, but now proponents want cannibis labeled a less dangerous drug to “expand medical research” which would lead to making it easier to buy, sell and more profitable, Respected medical institutions have indicated marijuana is a gateway to harder drugs and medical problems. Prayerfully, President Trump will not fall victim to persuasion by illusory facts as suspected concerning the COVID vaccine.

I certainly don’t consider marijuana as dangerous as alcohol. Spent my early days around both, experienced enough to speak.

The marijuana being sold today is not the stuff that readers here would have used in the past. It is much stronger. Think hashish.

If left up to me, I'd legalize marijuana and make alcohol illegal. And I've never used marijuana in my life but I've seen what it can do for someone with chronic migraines that drs just won't treat anymore.

MJ is considered a gateway drug and separating it from sources of other illicit drugs is probably a positive move.

Re #3 Today's cannabis is stronger than days past; it is harvested just as it reached optimum potency and sold within 1-2 months. This is not the same as when a load of weed was smuggled into the country and sat on a dock for weeks in the baking sun. Re #2 I consider myself conservative on almost all the issues we concern ourselves with here at L-dot but not this. American once had whole stands of hemp growing wild everywhere; we used it mostly to make paper and hemp fiber. Hemp fiber wears like IRON ad is very strong. Sailing ship's ropes were made of hemp due to their resiliance to breaking under stress-they stretch w/o breaking. Smoking hemp was introduced to us by immigrants from Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Phillipine Islands; in other words, black & brown people. People like the racist Harry Anslinger deemded smoking hemp as BAD not because of what it did, but because of who was using it. It's hard to reconcile the criminality of smoking weed in a country where moonshiners are local legends. NASCAR actually got its start from drivers who got started by running hooch from the Feds. Re #1 I agree with you-weed and alcohol aren't good for you if abused but I've heard of far more horror stories involving alcohol than weed. It's like any other intoxicant-don't overdo it, don;t drive under the influence, don't make any important decisions (!), and regulate it so only a consenting adult is able to purchase it..

Classifying marijuana as a Schedule I drug is a mistake that ought to be corrected. Schedule I and II drugs can kill in a single dose. Marijuana, even in modern strains that are more powerful than they were a half century ago, just isn't that toxic. You can't OD on it. It belongs on Schedule III. There are medical uses for it.

Every attempt to legalize it has failed. Government wants its cut (tax), so people buy it on the street anyway. All this will do is take the cops out of it.

I use medical marijuana for severe PTSD's. For over 20 years I didn't get a full nights sleep due to coming out of bed in full defensive posture screaming. A sleep study revealed breathing issues, so I started CPAP therapy. It helped slightly and I felt better in the mornings, but the CPAP was getting beat to he11 as it followed me during an attack. Thankfully Florida has MM. I don't smoke it, edibles only, makes dosing easier. It works for me. I've had 1 episode this year mainly due to improper dosing.

Can you tell our government is hard up for money. This is all about legalizing pot and taxing it. The irony is they all but illegalize cigarettes and ignore alcohol in spite of the damage it done. Ultimately, the individual has to police themself. Too bad there are many people, including intelligent people, out there making poor choices. They don't want to be held responsible for their choices either.

No. Marijuana is extremely dangerous to vulnerable people with suppressed or latent psychological issues. There are no regulations as to strength and production. If there is any medicinal value, get a prescription from a doctor. This drug should not be generally available to the public. I do not believe Trump is considering this. There is no evidence that he is, and he has not said so.

Mr. President! NO, NO, and NO. I understand the arguments about alcohol and marijuana. Alcohol and cigarettes have been verboten in terms of selling and marketing to kids. Not so marijuana. Marijuana is not only a drug, but it is the drug of choice for our warped culture. It is disgraceful how it is being marketed to kids as a real cool thing. The smell is pervasive on the streets of NY thereby not only giving it a cache but a nod to kids that it's okay and cool to do. I'm sorry, but these peddlers of marijuana, theses corporations are no different from companies that market and sell porn to young kids. I am very, very unhappy that Trump had a million dollar fundraiser at his home and golf club in NJ for these creeps. It is a very, very bad look for Trump who is so opposed to alcohol and drugs in his own life, to be cavorting with these characters. This is the first time I am deeply disappointed in my beloved President. Please, President Trump, hold firm, marijuana should not be legal. Please don't add your imprimatur to this movement. Please.

The more marijuana shops you see, the more the politicians are involved. They only love the money they get from it and do not care one bit about what it does to our youth and others. It's just another way for politicians get into office poor and come out rich.

I don't use either. Tried weed back in my younger days and didn't like it. Had a problem with alcohol and finally was able to give that up. I honestly don't think marijuana is any worse, and we will never be able to wipe it out, just like we tried with booze. Man has been making spirituous liquids for millennia and will never stop. I am on the fence about this, but it would have the salutary effect of driving out most of your local street corner pharmaceutical salesmen.

We’ve known for years that the Covid-19 vaccines left many Americans seriously injured. Yet despite this common knowledge, the federal government’s surveillance to ensure vaccine safety has been substandard, to put it charitably. Worse, its performance in compensating those injured by the vaccine has been pathetic. Now, Congress is finally paying attention to America’s vaccine woes. [Snip] The sheer number of reported adverse events from the Covid-19 vaccine (over 1.8 million) dwarfs all previously reported vaccine injuries. But because it is a “passive” reporting system, largely based on patient self-reporting, VAERS is unable to show a causal relationship between a specific vaccine injection and a particular adverse reaction.
