Bugs Bunny at 85: Bugs Reflected the Culture,
Politics of the Times

Original Article

I know, I know. We have been in the midst of a blizzard of important domestic and world events this summer, (Snip) But in the midst of all this, we should not forget the 85th birthday of that beloved all-American trickster and practical joker, Bugs Bunny. A look back at the original cartoon series shows just how much that rabbit reflected the culture. On July 27, 1940, the wisecracking, mouthy bunny with a Brooklyn accent got his official start in the Looney Tunes classic “A Wild Hare,” in which he bamboozles and confuses the most unsuccessful and hapless hunter in American history, Elmer Fudd, for the first of many times.

Comments:

How fortunate we older people are to have had such wonderful cartoons, without worrying about offending anyone. Just good laughs. For that matter, we had some great comedians too.

I love all these old cartoons. One of the lesser known characters was Witch Hazel. Imagine making a cartoon today where the children almost get cooked in an oven by a witch?

I love the Looney Tunes--the old ones that were actually funny. And #3, you can buy DVDs of Looney Tunes from Amazon, Walmart, and other places. (You'll never guess how I figured this out!)

If you've ever seen It Happened One Night starring Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable, the scene where Gable nonchalantly munches a carrot while endeavoring to put the aristocratic Colbert in her place was one of many sources for Bugs Bunny's persona. In times when it wasn't exactly clear what an American was supposed to be, there has always been something quintessentially American about Bugs Bunny. William Manchester's wonderful narrative history of America in the 20th century, The Glory and the Dream, includes a favorite anecdote: A Parisian is complaining about the presence of allied troops in his beloved city after World War II. He says, "It was awful! The British walking around like they owned the world, and the Americans walking around like they didn't give a d*mn who owned the world." I think of that story when I think of Bugs Bunny.

Every once in a while, his opponent hilariously managed to stay a step ahead of Bugs and maintain the upper had. The airplane Gremlin is one example. It was a tie in the end, though.

The Warner Brothers cartoons were the best ever. I think Bugs Bunny was the greatest cartoon character ever created. Nothing has topped him.

Last year, California scientists sparked outrage with a botched test on an old aircraft carrier, spraying saltwater to create artificial clouds and block sunlight. The tiny Alameda trial lasted just 20 minutes before furious city officials yanked the plug, slamming the team for zero advance notice. The team responsible were involved with the Marine Cloud Brightening Program based in the University of Washington. Now documents exposed by Politico, through an open records request to the University of Washington, reveal they plotted a far bigger gamble: a multimillion-dollar ocean experiment covering an area larger than Puerto Rico, aimed at cooling the planet.

Among the climatically correct, nothing is more scandalous than describing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as beneficial. You can be blacklisted from public forums, professional networking sites, and even be removed from your tenured university position as an accomplished scientist. Nonetheless, the truth is this: CO2 is fundamental to the photosynthetic process by which plants make food for themselves -- and ultimately for us. Furthermore, the increase in atmospheric CO2 from industrial activity in the past century has helped vegetation over most of the planet to flourish. Also benefiting plants has been the relative warmth of recent decades. Among the beneficiaries are fruit plants, whose sensitivity to cold is well established.

Half the country is up in arms about President Donald Trump’s inexplicable decision to mock his base, because many are appalled that Attorney General Pam Bondi seems to be orchestrating a coverup of a serial rapist of children. It has, in my view, to do with “the network.” I think that it is likely that multiple people who are critical to this administration’s success — my guess is, that these are mostly guys from the Silicon Valley community (Snip)— whether they are innocent or guilty, are in the Epstein files.

Trump administration officials held an urgent meeting Sunday to discuss “new information on Russiagate,” which they might use to build a criminal conspiracy case against Obama and Biden administration political appointees who allegedly weaponized the government against Trump, (Snip) The documents are said to contain long-classified information, including a secret 200-page congressional audit that reveals details about how an intelligence community assessment on Russia ordered by President Obama after the 2016 election was framed in a way that portrayed Trump as

The storms in rural Texas have been devastating, and the Trump Administration has acted swiftly. (Snip) FEMA’s initial slow response under the Biden Administration has been well-documented, and the partisan way that they provided assistance is reprehensible. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, noting the early inaction, was incensed. She claimed that the weather was being used as a weapon. Where MTG got her information is still uncertain. It is, however, becoming clearer as time marches on that governments around the world have been exploring the potential for controlling the weather. Still reveling in his political comeback after surviving two near-miss assassination attempts, last December, then-President-elect Trump stopped by the Christmas party of the Secret Service detail that was responsible for both saving his life and the failures that nearly ended it. Six agents, including Myosoty Perez, whom Trump was referring to at the December party, have been placed on 10-42 days of unpaid leave for their roles in the egregious security breaches.

You might be forgiven for having missed it when “Lovely One” came out. As the media politely notes, it was “briefly” on the New York Times bestseller list and is now going for half price on Amazon. That is mostly to be expected of the ghostwritten memoir of an obscure judge. Except that Jackson received a $893,750 advance for her memoir and is now reporting $2 million in profits last year. Last week, Israel launched a bold and necessary campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran — a regime that has spent the last four decades chanting “Death to Israel” and “Death to America” while funding terror from Beirut to Baghdad. As President Donald Trump marks six months into his second term — celebrating triumphs like ending numerous wars, slashing job-killing regulations, making tax cuts permanent, and signing over 140 executive orders to revive America's energy independence and economy — one persistent swamp creature threatens to derail it all. Once a vocal critic of Donald Trump, Graham flipped like a pancake after the MAGA-leader took over the Oval office — raising eyebrows and fueling theories that he's been “activated” by shadowy forces.

The Donald Trump-Russia collusion scandal that first broke in December 2016 and roared on until April 2019 has no parallel in our history — it’s not even close. As president-elect and later as sitting president, Trump was accused by the country’s intelligence and law-enforcement apparatus of conspiring with a hostile power to subvert the 2016 election and sneak a crooked path to the White House. Along the way, a damning Intelligence Community Assessment was issued, a major FBI investigation, code-named Crossfire Hurricane, targeted the president, and a special counsel, Robert Mueller, was granted a team of prosecutors and a budget of millions to bring the guilty to justice.

Tamura reportedly had a three-page suicide note inside his pocket, which claimed he had a brain injury from a contact sport and blamed the NFL. Tamura, who played high school football, reportedly wanted his brain studied after his death. An official motive has not yet been released.

Israel is blaming the UN for the lack of vital food deliveries to Gaza — as harrowing video captured hundreds of desperate Palestinians swarming aid trucks over the weekend. Israel officials are hitting back at claims that they have delayed aid from coming into Gaza — sharing images of tons of aid piled up inside the Gaza Strip, which they said is just waiting to be delivered to hungry Palestinians. Col. Abdullah Halabi, from the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), told reporters last week that around 1,000 truckloads of aid remain undelivered “due to a lack of cooperation from the international community and international organizations.”
