They’re building a statue. Not for Hank Aaron. Not for a war hero, a humanitarian, or a man who walked clean through the game. But for Barry Bonds.
Let that sit for a second.
The San Francisco Giants will install it outside Oracle Park, treating it like a crown jewel. A monument not just to what he did but to how he did it and how everyone around him pretended not to notice. The fans. The press. The suits. All of them.
And now they’re going to bronze it.
I remember what he looked like in the ’90s. Lean. Fast. A five-tool player who could steal a bag and hit all fields.

This is your MLB on drugs.....and they just ignored it. Now they are revering it. How sad.

Bonds, a great all around ballplayer, was a lock for Cooperstown before he started juicing. Then after the late 'Ninties destruction of Roger Maris's 162 game season record of 61 home runs (1961)--and Babe Ruth's 154 game record of 60 home runs (1927)--by Mark McGwire (70) and Sammy Sosa (66)*, Bonds hit an otherworldly 73 home runs in 2001, and eventually eclipsed Hank Aaron's career record on 755 homeruns. Most baseballs fans didn't like the steroids. Neither did the Baseball Writers Association of America, which during Bonds's ten year eligibility for Cooperstown never gave him the 75% required. He's not going to the Hall of Fame. The HoF is reserved for players like Hank Aaron. And players like Barry Bonds's own godfather, Willie Mays (who, along with Roberto Clemente, was one of the two best all around players I ever saw).
*During the 1998 home run race, Sen. Teddy Kennedy, in his cups as usual, called the two yearly home run kings "Mack (sic) McGwire and Sammy Sooser"!

The worst thing about the drug scandal is that it ruined possible records for legitimate players. It is unlikely that any player no matter how great who is not using enhancing drugs will ever surpass Bonds' (and maybe McGuires and Sosa's) HR "accomplishments." The druggies surpassed Aaron, Mays, Ruth, Maris etc. and made genuine records obselete.

During his heyday with the Cubs, I once saw Sosa hit a line-drive HR in Petco Park that - I swear - was still going UP when it hit the left field stands. Not humanly possible. Disappointing to read about this, as I thought all of those clowns were destined to fade from public memory forever.

I used to love watching pro cycling; no more. I fought and argued for Floyd Landis, fought and argued (for years), for Lance Armstrong. Just to have them finally own up, THEY CHEATED! I don’t trust any of them anymore and don’t have the interest anymore.

Yes, there should be scorn for Barry's unrepentant juicing. Before his roids years (i.e for the first half of his career), though, he was a generational talent. Please stop trying to pretend that his career was all worthy or all unworthy. Unless that semi-contradictory aspect of human nature is too complex for you to ponder.
In fairness, #1, they didn't just ignore it, they practically promoted it, by paying lip service to their own condemnations.
And in fairness, the other direction, the violated promise of anonymity makes me wonder whether it's more unjust to ignore illegally obtained evidence or to leave a cheater unpunished.

Let's say the quiet part out loud, "It's all because he's black, isn't it?"

Things seem to be okay today that were never okay before except maybe in Russia. Lance Armstrong lived a similarly and artificially charmed life, making all of his wins meaningless. They booted out Pete Rose for what amounted to him making a friendly bet of pennies but Bonds gets a pass for reasons suspected but not mentioned in mixed company. I never followed the MLB much and now not at all but this is wrong. Just go celebrate your Gay Nights and George Floyd days and don't bother the rest of us. We don't care.

No.3 is right. I would throw in Williams, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and the greatest athlete of all, Mickey Mantle, all natural athletes. Taking steroids is cheating and IMHO, the steroid crowd should be excluded from the record books.
