Florida is about to make a bold statement in the ongoing national debate over illegal immigration, and it’s not just talk — it’s action.
The Sunshine State is rolling out a new approach that’s as tough as it is practical: setting up a string of detention centers specifically for illegal immigrants with criminal records. The centerpiece of this initiative is a facility tucked deep in the Everglades, built on the bones of an abandoned airfield, and already earning an unforgettable nickname from state officials: “Alligator Alcatraz.”
The name isn’t just for show.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier made it clear that this is no ordinary detention center.

They are secretly hoping that many of the illegal alien criminals will attempt to escape. Win-win for Florida and the hungry alligators.

I love the idea, but I wonder if they will have a hard time getting people to work there! I sure wouldn't want that job! Working with the Prisoners would be bad enough, but how about having to live there as there is no way off to go home every night! Hmmm

Alligators and 20' snakes. I wouldn't get 10 minutes of sleep per night. Hope the illegal scum enjoy themselves.

Florida folk wisdom (inherited from the Seminole/Miccosukee in this case) states that if dumped in the Everglades, "If the gators and the snakes don't get you, the skeeters will."
Being dumped in the Everglades being the indigenous punishment for serious crimes. Shunning or outlawing at their best.
And amazingly enough, you can also die of hypothermia in south Florida.

I'm sure there's already a sympathetic liberal judge and a commie ACLU lawyer prepping a cruel and unusual punishment defense for the first prisoner sent there!

Why detain them beyond a day or two? DEPORT THEM immediately.

Part of winning hearts and minds is to entertain people. Who doesn’t hear Alligator Alcatraz and immediately get a little chuckle.

I'm a little confused...FTA:"...there’s no way in, no way out.”
So...nobody will ever arrive? Sounds like they're building the California High Speed Rail.

"Alligator Alcatraz" ... that's nice. This property lies in extreme eastern Collier County, very close to Dade County, just north of Fiftymile Bend on the Tamiami Trail (US 41). Although the business is long gone, there was an entrepreneur with various supercars for rent and a dead flat two mile long runaway to let 'em cut loose. The fastest of the cars hit 200 mph (322 kph). How much did it cost to rent a supercar? A bit or two. There's nothing there but water moccasins, alligators, Burmese pythons, Florida panthers, black bears, Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes, American crocodile .... Pure Florida.

The Kennedy Space Center has enjoyed this security auxiliary for decades. We also have wild pigs. They usually avoid human inhabited areas, but they are just outside in the uninhabited areas.

Why do we need detention centers for illegals? Catch the clowns and put them on a plane back to wherever they came from and be done with them. They have no rights as non-citizens. If all you do is jail them, they're still here living off the taxpayer's dime. It defeats the whole purpose of arresting them.

I'm sure many law enforcement people will apply for the job...if it's financially advantageous....I'm sure Florida will work it out....I love the idea...but then I loved the California Alcatraz idea too....clean it up and strengthen the locks...and fill it with criminals....the Florida Alcatraz is even better...with the alligators and pythons as security guards....isn't it fun having people in charge who know what to do...and when to do it...thank you President Trump.....

#14 is absolutely correct, except that these invasive pythons are thriving, and are getting well established. Those snakes like Florida! Some semi-serious "thinker" came up with the idea of importing the world's third largest cat, the jaguar, a few of which might still exist in the American southwest, in extreme southern New Mexico and Arizona. Jaguars, which can weigh 260#, have been known to go into water, grab a ten foot caiman (like an American alligator) behind the head, take it to land, and eat it raw. The brilliant idea is that these big cats from Mexico, Central America, and South America would get rid of the likes of feral pigs, which are common, and pythons.
We're also concerned that a few Reticulated pythons may have taken residence in the 'Glades. Those pythons, from SE Asia, are the world's longest snakes, growing to thirty-three feet while their Burmese cousins reach only twenty. At one time, eons ago, jaguars were believed to have lived here in Florida. Their range has shrunk greatly. Should they live here again? Do we need more predators?

Attention seeking waste of money. Lock them up somewhere for the time it takes to arrange transportation and then get them out of here.

They will get the guards. They will have to have really nice money and maybe short stays for quick rotations, but people will go for the right incentives. Probably had to do something similar to get Alcatraz personnel.
