The Supreme Court Tames NEPA replies

This is big news: in recent decades, it has been just about impossible to get anything done in the United States. The permitting process for infrastructure projects of all kinds has become, essentially, a never-ending gauntlet that few projects can survive. There are several reasons for this, one of which is the expansive reading that activists and courts have given the National Environmental Policy Act. NEPA requires permitting agencies to analyze environmental impacts before proceeding with projects. That is a feel-good principle that, in practice, has often brought progress to a screeching halt.

Some of America’s greatest presidents defied court rulings, and history later confirmed that those examples of defiance were not only justified but necessary. They didn’t do it to seek power. They did it to protect the country when others froze. That’s not a crisis. That’s leadership. Now that two federal courts have blocked President Trump’s new economic tariffs,

Border czar Tom Homan said he plans to visit Nashville in the “near future” to oversee increased immigration enforcement operations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as the city’s mayor, Freddie O’Connell, advances efforts to shield illegal aliens from law enforcement. Earlier this month, a joint immigration enforcement operation conducted by ICE in conjunction with the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) in Nashville resulted in the arrests of 196 criminal illegal aliens.Despite the operation seeing the removal of aliens with violent criminal histories, O’Connell has maintained that the enforcement operation was “not focused” on making the city “safer,”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged Wednesday to help Ukraine develop its own long-range missile systems that would be free of any Western-imposed limitations on their use and targets as the Kyiv government fights to repel Russia’s invasion. Some of the advanced weapon systems that allies have supplied to Ukraine during the 3-year war were subject to range and target restrictions — a fraught political issue stemming from fears that if the weapons struck deep inside Russia, the Kremlin might retaliate against the country that provided them and draw NATO into Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II.

Leaving aside that Scott Pelley probably spoiled graduation day for some Wake Forest University parents and students, his anti-Trump commencement screed last week still has its virtues. Namely, Pelley’s outrageous fearmongering throws open the window to the mindset of a media figure at one of the nation’s supposedly premier outlets. The view we get is so appalling as to be stomach-churning. It turns out that the man from CBS is full of BS. But we already knew that, didn’t we? The surprise is that he outed himself in such a revealing and public spectacle.

Last week’s horrific murders in Washington, DC, can only further feed the backlash against rising antisemitism already brewing in next month’s city Democratic primaries all the way down the ballot. Start with two City Council races in Brooklyn, where Democratic Socialist/Working Families Party-aligned extremist incumbents face serious challenges from saner Dems. In and around Park Slope, Maya Kornberg, a research fellow at the progressive Brennan Center, is challenging Shanana Hanif, who, even after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas atrocities, has remained all-out anti-Israel. And just to the south, Ling Ye, a former aide to Rep. Dan Goldman, is taking on incumbent Alexa Avilés, a similarly lockstep far-lefty.

This Memorial Day weekend came at a lousy time: The Democratic Party was teetering towards an all-out civil war, and the holiday weekend messed up the momentum. What fun is that? Beer, burgers, and babes in bikinis are good (along with, y’know, the actual meaning of Memorial Day), but what about the Democratic Party and their circular firing squad? Did it disband? Nope. The Holiday weekend was merely a momentary pause — the calm before the chaos. Along with the unexpected news drop of Biden’s cancer announcement, Memorial Day didn’t avert the civil war. It only delayed it. But not for long: This morning — at 5 a.m. on the flippin’ dot! —

I assure you no one was more dithery than I as we watched vans full of ballots arrive at voting stations in various swing states in the early morning after Election Day in 2020. We saw most of the swing states stop counting votes at almost the same time, something that has never happened in my 59 years. We were appalled to watch this stooge in Detroit as he covered the windows in a ballot-counting office. And yet, no one did anything. I truly believed we had a "system" to keep treasonous oiks from stealing an election so blatantly. I assumed this would all get figured out in the courts,

The Big Beautiful Bill passed the House in the early morning of May 22, 2025. Here are the current benefits of the legislation (and the key reforms): Makes the 2017 Trump tax cuts permanent for working and middle-class families. Increases the child tax credit through 2028. Adds work requirements for childless adults on Medicaid. These requirements would kick in December 2026, as opposed to 2029. Adds work requirements and forces states to cover costs for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Increases the standard deductions on social security payments.

Donald Trump began his presidency with the shortest of honeymoons. To give you an idea of just how set people's opinion of Trump really is, a "honeymoon" for him is an evenly divided country. He inched into positive territory on some polls, and given pollsters' history of getting Trump's support wrong, it's not unfair to assume that his support really did exceed 50% by a small margin. In that first month, Trump was definitely on a roll--love DOGE or hate it, Trump benefited from his whirlwind of activity and the complete collapse of the Democratic Party.

With his official stint in government coming to an end, Elon Musk thanked President Donald Trump on Wednesday for "the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending." Since joining the second Trump administration at the beginning of the term in January, Musk has led the Department of Government Efficiency, tasked with slashing the size of the federal government. As a so-called special government employee, Musk can work for the administration for 130 days in a calendar year. The end of May marks 130 days since Trump's inauguration. "The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government," Musk wrote.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday announced new visa restrictions on foreign authorities who are found to be “complicit” in censoring Americans. “For too long, Americans have been fined, harassed, and even charged by foreign authorities for exercising their free speech rights,” Rubio wrote in a post on X. “Today, I am announcing a new visa restriction policy that will apply to foreign officials and persons who are complicit in censoring Americans. Free speech is essential to the American way of life – a birthright over which foreign governments have no authority,”

WASHINGTON — A federal court on Wednesday blocked President Donald Trump from imposing sweeping tariffs on imports under an emergency-powers law, swiftly throwing into doubt Trump’s signature set of economic policies that have rattled global financial markets, frustrated trade partners and raised broader fears about inflation intensifying and the economy slumping. The ruling from a three-judge panel at the New York-based U.S. Court of International Trade came after several lawsuits arguing Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs exceeded his authority and left the country’s trade policy dependent on his whims. Trump has repeatedly said the tariffs would force manufacturers to bring back factory jobs to the U.S.
