For years, the Connecticut Senator, who took office shortly after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, was one of the nation’s most outspoken advocates for tighter gun laws. Gun safety was so important, he argued, that supporting an assault-weapons ban should be mandatory for Democratic leaders.
Recently, Murphy has come to believe he was wrong. Not about tougher gun laws, but about trying to force all Democrats to adopt his position. “I bear some responsibility for where we are today,” he told me in a phone interview in April.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is angling to be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2028 by trying to appeal to voters outside his progressive base. But he's not fooling anyone.
Newsom, for example, has proposed limiting health care coverage for migrants who entered the country illegally. Progressives’ lack of tolerance for other views has presented itself in different iterations, from the cancel culture phenomenon to angry demonstrations on college campuses when a conservative dares to speak.
So perhaps it's not surprising that liberals love slapping labels on those who have the audacity to believe something different from progressive dogma.

Hundreds of peonies were vandalized at a University of Michigan garden at the peak of the flowers' bloom time.
The vandalism happened late Saturday and was discovered Wednesday at the WE Upjohn Peony Garden in the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. Republican strategist Scott Jennings pushed back hard when podcast host Tara Palmeri claimed during a Sunday debate that political violence was an equivalent issue on “both sides” of the aisle.
Jennings said on “The Tara Palmeri Show” that one recommendation he would give Democrats is to dispose of their “violent tendencies,” noting the vandalism against Tesla that spiked due to Elon Musk’s involvement with President Donald Trump’s administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Palmeri interrupted to refute his claim that political violence is a left-wing problem by bringing up the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, but Jennings noted that it was “one bad day” rather than a pattern.

Hassan Chokr, 35, was out on bail when he drove through the parking lot of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills, outside Detroit, and shouted antisemitic slurs and threats as parents dropped off their kids in December 2022, authorities said.
He pleaded guilty to federal gun charges on May 28.
