Free Speech and Personal Fortitude

In a previous column, I detailed Michael Mann’s unraveling legal crusade, focusing on his courtroom defeat and the staggering financial penalty levied against him. Readers' responses were passionate, particularly about the absence of commentary on Mark Steyn. Let me be direct: the omission was intentional. The Mann saga deserved focus, and Steyn’s fight deserves its own chapter.
This is that chapter. Author, broadcaster, and unflinching cultural critic Mark Steyn did not merely weather a defamation trial. He survived it physically, financially, and morally when most would have buckled under the strain. What began as a battle over words became a battle over the soul of free speech.

Mark Steyn is a hero. The legal process was a crime against him, and our court system was exposed as the fraud it is.

If it takes 10 years to try a case, there is NO CASE. It is being manufactured. Mann should be sanctioned for wasting the court's time. I suppose that is partly what some of the $1 million payout was, a poke in the eye to Mann for his lies and for dragging things out. It's lawfare and it ought to be illegal.

Mark Steyn is a hero. Imagine the hell this man has suffered, for over TEN years. I don’t know about the rest of you but I’m going to help celebrate his vindication by purchasing a few of his books. God bless you, Mark, and thank you.

Excellent idea, #3. And Steyn books make excellent Father’s Day, birthday and Christmas presents.

Steyn's book A Disgrace to the Profession summerizes mann's scientific failures. Over 120 scientists from many disciplines explain how mann misinterpreted (lied) in order to support his hockey stick theory.
mann also lost his Canadian lawsuit against climatologist Dr Tim Ball (RIP).
To my knowledge mann has not paid the Ball family the court ordered recompense nor any other award.

Fraud can go only so far before reality and true science catches up. Hats off to Steyn for hanging in there until it did.

Man is a scammer, and a mean, vindictive one. I hope lots and lots of bad things happen to this lying, mean spirited FRAUD.

Steyn is a hero but the same cannot be said for National Review. It's hard to imagine William F. Buckley leaving one of his authors to struggle on alone against a meritless defamation suit.

Steyn is indeed a fearless hero.
National Review and little Richie Lowry turned out to be cowardly and (with that anti-Trump ussue( anti-American.

God bless Mark Steyn - - our HERO!
And Michael (Piltdown) Mann - - you know where you can put your hockey stick!
In the early weeks of this forum - - I coined the term "gullible warming." Now I feel vindicated too!

This should be a MUST READ, and the President should ensure the entire press corps has a copy of this letter and the verdict from the jury which did NOT believe the "hockey stick" theory that's been pushed as gospel for decades.
I am grateful for Mark Steyns for his relentless pursuit of the truth and tame a bully using the power of his position as a weapon to silence any critics (who were right).

How much did Mark Steyn have to pay in lawyer fees and court costs over the last 13 years?

The problem is not so much Michael Mann, who pushed a silly theory based on hot air but a judge who would rule in somebody's favor based on a fairy tale. Mark Steyn is indeed a great man and I have enjoyed his superior writing for years. He is what true courage looks like.

FTA - "These lawsuits are designed not to win but to exhaust, intimidate, and silence. And in the world of climate science, where the political and the empirical are often inseparable, they have been used to devastating effect. Steyn refused to be silenced. His actions likely discourage future plaintiffs from using defamation law as a bludgeon against ideological foes."
I hope that when Mike Mann eventually assumes room temperature that this evil creature is denied entry to the Heavens above.
Mark, I'm most happy for you and your toughness to stand up and win.

And as we see, Mark Steyn and President Trump both have the same tenacity and determination to prevail and defeat the evil elements within our society
